HP G60 screen keeps going dim

I have an HP G60 and the screen keeps going dim…but when I close and open it it comes back up for a few seconds or so..I’ve tried fn + f8 but it does not help and I’ve tried adjusting the power plan when it gives me more than ten seconds to do so…please help!

Most likely it’s either failed screen inverter or failed backlight lamp inside the LCD screen. Which one is causing the problem? You cannot tell without testing the laptop with a known good inverter or LCD screen.
Both the inverter board and backlight lamp have very similar failure symptoms.

If you don’t have spare parts and have to guess, try replacing the inverter board first. If it doesn’t help, replace the LCD screen.

Also, your problem could be related to the video cable or motherboard but it’s not very common.

Test your laptop with an external monitor. If external monitor has no image, this could be memory failure. Try reseating memory modules. Try replacing memory modules.
If external image works fine all the time and the problem appears only on the laptop screen, try the following:
    1. Try reseating the video cable on both ends. It’s possible the cable not making good connection with the motherboard or LCD screen.
    2. Could be defective video cable. Try replacing the cable.
    3. Could be bad LCD screen. Replace the screen.

It’s hard to tell what’s wrong without seeing the laptop.

Hi, thank you for the information provided in your website. But I have an issue that is not listed here, I have an HP G60-4420M and the display is completely black when looking at it and when I tilt the screen at an extreme angle and look hard at it I can see the start menu if I have it up, but barely can see that. I have tried brightening the display with the F8 key and nothing happens. It works with an external monitor perfectly, and I have no clue what to do about this issue. The computer is 18 months old and has been the best I have ever had. I recently bought a small 10.1 acer aspire for college purposes which has proven to be a mistake, can’t believe that they say the warranty goes void if you upgrade to windows 7 home premium from starter. I can’t win for losing, but even having this new computer and loving the portability I can not stop wanting to fix my HP laptop because I love it so much, but can not afford to send it to them to fix the issue whatever it may be because they want $500 up front to complete the service claim. I am currently doing a system restore in hopes that will fix the problem but I am praying that you might have an idea that would really help me and I would so very much appreciate it. I read that you work full time and run this site so I understand it may take some time to respond to this post. Thank you again for your time and have a blessed day.

  4. Compaq Presario CQ61 backlight problem?
    Hi,

I recently turned on my laptop and the screen was black. After a while when it booted up, the screen came on as normal and then flashed out about 10 seconds later. I can shine a torch on to the screen when it boots up and see windows and everything but it’s obviously too dark to use. I replaced inverter and lcd panel but the problem remains…

How should I go about fixing this?
