Battery discharges when connected to DC power

My HP 520 laptop battery discharges even though it is connected to the DC power and another thing the battery starts charging if i shut down the laptop. Please give me the solution.

I think this problem is related to the DC jack failure. In HP 520 laptop the DC jack soldered directly to the motherboard. Overtime, if you plug/unplug AC adapter a lot, connection between the DC jack and motherboard breaks and it stops charging the battery.

Most likely you can fix the problem if you resolder the the DC jack.

In order to repair the jack, it’s necessary to disassemble the laptop and remove the motherboard. This service manual will help you to remove the motherboard.

  1. I have a Dell Latitude D620 laptop and lately when it boots up, it complains that it is not connected to the power cord even though it is. For a while, the battery refused to charge as well, but I just noticed that it is charging again and it’s back to 100%, but the computer is STILL complaining about not being plugged into a power cord. So I ran an internal diagnostic by pressing F5 and it said something to the effect of a “DST Short Status Test” had failed. Now, I don’t know if this is related to the electrical problem or what, but…..what the hell’s going on with my computer, anyway? It seems to have developed a host of problems seemingly overnight….. HELP! Thanks!

  2. An insane repair dude

I have a Toshiba laptop that has an interesting problem. The model is a C665-S5120. When I turn it on with the battery installed, it turns on like normal, but when it looses its charge and I plug in the AC adapter, the battery does not charge. I have a second one to check and see if this one has gone bad, and it had not because even with the second one in, the problem still remains. The little light on the side of the laptop does not turn on, almost as if its dead. It does start Windows with the battery, so there is nothing wrong with the motherboard. It seems to be a problem with the DC jack, and the adapter, when plugged in, is a little loose. I need HELP!(Note: the Operating System is Windows 7)

    erasto couto,

their is something wrong with my hp laptop. when the Ac adapter is plugged and i press the power button it came on for a few seconds and shut off. i tried something different, i took the battery out and plugged the AC Adapter but this time it didnt even come on. do you think its the Ac adapter or something is wrong with the laptop.

Let me give you a better explanation.
I think your problem is related to the AC adapter.
Most likely the AC adapter is bad and the battery is discharged.
The battery still has some charge, barely enough to turn on the laptop for a moment. That’s why it starts for a moment with the battery installed.
On the other hand, when the battery is removed, there is no power coming to the laptop at all. That’s why I think you have a bad adapter.

Most likely it’s bad AC adapter.
