I dropped a drink on my keyboard witch then soaked through
Hi my name is Sam and was wondering if you could help me, I recently (last Friday) dropped a cordial drink on my keyboard which then soaked through. It will not power up but the DVD driver and fan will start under DVD mode (button on top near power button). Please could you give me any advice on cleaning the insides as I have been quoted £100 to get it clean which I don’t have?
Unfortunately, liquid spills are very unpredictable and any part in the laptop could be damaged. Even a part not affected by the liquid directly could go bad. A liquid spill diagnostic is expensive because the laptop must be completely taken apart for an inspection. In 99% it is not enough just to clean the system board or the keyboard; the entire part must be replaced. I think if you can fix your laptop for £100 it is a good deal. Some companies charge $120 just for the diagnostic and the price doesn’t include parts or labor charges.

@ KC,
Yes, it’s possible. It depends on the damage. If you see a lot of corrosion, most likely cleaning will not work.
It means you’ll have to replace the motherboard and Sony motherboards aver very expensive. Probably it’s better to buy a new laptop.

@Laptop Freak
i’ve read the article in link.
is there a possibility that even after cleaning the motherboard the laptop still wont work? and is it a really bad thing if the motherboard gets damaged?

@ KC,
Sounds like the motherboard was damaged.

Hi I recently spilt milk (with sugar) on my Dell Inspiron laptop. It was only a little bit of milk on the mousepad, it started beeping and making static noises and then I turned it off immediately and left it to dry for a week. It works perfectly fine now, BUT my speakers appear to be damaged! Any advice would be great. Thanks

Juice was spilled on my laptop keyboard. I cleaned keyboard thoroughly. The \ key is acting as if it is stuck. I replaced the keyboard, the issue persists. When I replaced keyboard I checked what connection I could see and everything look good with no sticky debris. With new keyboard installed the problem still persists. Could it be the motherboard? Should I just take it in to someone? Thanks.

roly,
Disassemble the laptop as much as you can. Leave only three main components: motherboard, CPU and memory. Make sure all three components are properly connected to each other. Turn it on with an external monitor attached. Do you get anything?
Most likely that this unit is beyond economical repair.

My computer has a far worse problem.
Last June 29, flashfloods hit our area, and my Toshiba Satellite L30 was under one meter of water for about six hours.
I dried it as best I could afterwards by removing access covers at the back and using compressed air (moderate pressure) spray and low intensity heat from a heat gun plus a bit of sunlight.
I tried plugging and turning it on after one week.
The leftmost indicator light goes on solid green, the middle light remains yellow, and the rightmost light blinks at regular intervals, but this is not the same as the normal blinks. There is no sound from the blower fan.
I tried to call the service center and explained the situation but I was told that it is most likely that this unit is beyond economical repair, and I have to pay for the diagnostics regardless of whether the unit gets fixed or not.
Can I try a few things just to be sure that it is truly beyond repair without spending anything?
Thank you very much for any advise or instructions you might be able to give. I’m just a newbie willing to try anything.

A few days ago I split a little milk on the keyboard pad of my Acer laptop. Freaking out, I dried it as best I could. I’m a total moron, so I kept using the computer figuring nothing would go wrong. It did the next day after I had reopened the laptop; after using it as normal for an hour or so, it froze up and the video I was watching skipped like a broken record player. I restarted the computer and what I got was a blank screen, nothing more. I can turn it on, it just won’t show anything and no tap of any possible button will change that. Is there any way I can fix this myself without having to tell my parents I broke my laptop? I’m 15 and accident prone.

My daughter spilled water on my Toshiba laptop. Now, it almost boots up but not quite. It goes through the startup process over and over again. It never quite boots up all the way. It just goes round and round with the boot up process but never quite boots up all the way. Should I replace my hard drive ?

Spilt milk over the keyboard of my HP pavillion dv9000 laptop so I took it apart and cleaned it up and made sure all the connections where in place let it dry for about 4 days and it started right back up. My problem is that over time when I restarted the laptop it kept taking longer and longer to boot back up . At first it was a matter of minouts then it progressed to hours then it went on to be that I press the power button on friday and the darned thing comes on finally on sunday morning. I have sence taken it back apart and can find no visable damage at all, no milk residue left, everything is in its place the battery, wall plug and all of that check out as being fine. What happend here ?

Tham,
I cannot tell you what’s wrong without looking at the laptop. Liquid spills are unpredictable. It’s possible that you’ve damaged the motherboard.
It’s necessary to disassemble the laptop and take a closer look at the internal parts.
