Toshiba Satellite Pro 6100 freezes up

I have a Toshiba 6100 Satellite Pro. Recently, I took it in for repairs after it completely died. They told me it was a hard drive problem and replaced the hard drive, costing me $212. I got the laptop back and it would freeze up every two minutes, so I took it back in. They said it was the motherboard and the factory would fix it for free. My computer techie friends say this is highly unlikely that both the motherboard and the hard drive would screw up at the same time. Did I pay over 200 bucks to get a new hard drive that wasn’t necessary?

I wouldn’t say it is very unlikely that you had 2 different problems in the same laptop. I repair laptops every day and sometimes during the repair process we discover a problem not reported by the customer. It is possible that the hard drive you had failed the diagnostic test and the technician had to quote you a new one. Think about it. Your technician had to fix a “dead” laptop. He tested the hard drive and it failed the test. After he replaced the hard drive the laptop booted fine and he assumed that the problem is fixed. We see a lot of Toshiba Satellite Pro 6100 laptop with the same problem. Laptop locks up, freezes up or fails to boot at all. It is a common problem with this model. We think that laptop fails to operate properly because of a faulty connection between the power board and the system board. Sometimes you can make it to boot if you apply some pressure on the palmrest. In some cases you can temporarily fix the problem by reseating the power board, but most likely the laptop will fail again. To repair this issue the system board and the power board should be replaced.

    Joe,
Troubleshooting Windows 98 can take hours and there is no guaranty you’ll fix the problem. Can you reinstall the operating system? You also can try restoring registry back to the time when the laptop was working fine.

My laptop started freezing up about two days ago. I have an Hp, and I believe the Model is a dv 1513. My computer will load the HP splash screen then freeze. I tried restarting the computer but it did not help. I also checked the memory modules on the underside of the computer to see if they were connected, and they were. I also tried to test each module independently to see if that was the problem or not. I dropped my computer about 1 ft on a carpet floor about 3 months ago. It has worked fine up until now. I thought maybe my memory modules have been affected because my computer runs somewhat sluggish, but I am not exactly sure what the problem is. I think it may be the motherboard or the hard drive. Is there any way that I can fix this problem?

    Mark Bookout,
When the laptop start freezing up without any reason, test the hard drive and memory first. You can test the hard drive with Hitachi’s drive fitness test and memory with Memtest86+ utility. Links to both utilities you’ll find on the right pane in “Useful Links”.
It’s possible that you have a software related problem and there is nothing wrong with the hardware. In cases like this I usually try booting a laptop from the Knoppix CD (live Linux CD). Knopix runs directly from the CD bypassing Windows OS. If the laptop works fine with Knoppix but not Windows, probably there is something wrong with Windows.
If the hard drive and memory passes tests try reinstalling the operating system.

I HAVE A PROBLEM WITH MY TOSHIBA SATELLITE A-100 LAPTOP. I’VE HAD IT FOR ABOUT A YEAR AND A HALF AND IT HAS BEEN WORKING PERFECTLY WELL BUT JUST LAST WEEK IT STARTED FREEZING ON ME. MY COMPUTER WILL RANDOMLY FREEZE WHEN I PLAY MOVIE FILES AND MAKE A BUZZING SOUND. I HAVE TO KEEP MANUALLY REBOOT THE COMPUTER TO GET IT WORKING AGAIN. IT DOESN’T FREEZE EVERY TIME I WATCH A MOVIE FILE, BUT IT FREEZES MAYBE 70% OF THE TIME. IT FREEZES WHEN I WATCH DOWNLOADED MOVIE FILES, CLIPS FROM YOUTUBE, AND ONLINE STREAM MOVIES FROM WEBSITES LIKE ABC.COM. I FORMATTED MY COMPUTER BECAUSE I INITIALLY THOUGHT IT WAS A VIRUS OR SOMETHING, BUT AFTER I COMPLETELY FORMATTED, THE SAME PROBLEM STILL OCCURS. I HAVE A FEELING IT MIGHT BE SOMETHING TO DO WITH MY GRAPHIC CARD OR SOMETHING BECAUSE IT ONLY FREEZES WHEN I PLAY MOVIE FILES. MY CARD IS Mobile Intel(R) 945 Express Chipset Family I INSTALLED THE UPDATES FOR IT BUT I STILL HAVE THE PROBLEM. I REALLY HOPE YOU COULD HELP ME FIX IT!

It sounds like a problem with the hard drive. I think you’ll have to take your laptop to the service center.

If you tried reinstalling the operating system and it didn’t help then most likely this is a hardware problem.
First, I would recommend testing memory and hard drive. You can use Memtest86+ and Hitachi’s DFT tests, I linked to both utilities in Useful Links.

In this model the graphics card is integrated into the motherboard and if it failed, you’ll have to replace the whole motherboard.

I have a Toshiba satellite L35. When I push the power button. The Toshiba screen pops up immediately and across the bottom it says, press F2 to enter setup or F12 to enter multi-boot selection menu but pressing either number does nothing. The fan is on, and three green lights. I have tried a new memory module, and it does the same thing. I also have pulled out the hard drive and powered it up, the Toshiba screen is still there I would appreciate any help thanks
