How to tighten loose hinge screws in Toshiba Tecra 8100 laptop
I have a Toshiba Tecra 8100 that has a problem with the hinge(s)…the back won’t stay up (very floppy)…I was told it may be a loose screw or hinge may need to be replaced. Can’t find instructions on how to get to the hinges to find out…can you help?
That’s correct. A floppy display indicates broken hinges or loose screws. I would try to tighten the screws first. You can get access to the screws if you remove the LCD screen mask from the display assembly. Here is a display disassembly guide for Toshiba Tecra 8100. Be careful when you removing the screen mask, it’s very fragile and can be easily broken. You can skip steps 5 and 6 showing how to remove the FL inverter board. On the step 6 you can see 2 screws securing the hinges. When you remove the screen mask, you also get a clear view on the hinges and you can check if they are broken.

I also have a Toshiba Tecra 8100 laptop that has a problem with the hinges. The display is loose and doesn’t stay upright. After taking apart the display assembly, I discovered that the hinges are broken. To replace the hinges I need to please know the part numbers for both the left and right sides and where can I purchase them? I would greatly appreciate any help you could provide.

Jude,
Here’s what you are looking for. I assume that you have a Tecra 8100 laptop with 14 inches screen and the part that is broken is located inside the laptop base (not inside the display assembly).
Brake hinge left.
P000309030 for all displays.
Brake hinge right.
P000309040 – for Toshiba, Sharp, Samsung displays
P000311310 – for Hitachi and Chimei displays

Hello Laptop Freak,
Thanks for the info; it is very helpful. Are you certain that the part# for the left brake hinge is compatible for all displays? The website below claims that it is only compatible for Hitachi and Chimei displays. Can you please confirm? Also, are all the part#s you provided for the brake hinges compatible for Tecra 8000 and 8200 or only for 8100?
Thank you.

Jude,
According to the Toshiba part list for Tecra 8100 with 14” screen:
Left hinge with part number P000309030 works for all displays.
Left hinge with part number P000294140 works for Toshiba, Samsung, Sharp displays (btw, it’s cheaper). Probably Toshiba is right.
If you would give me a particular laptop model number (it’s located on the sticker with the name and serial number) it would be much easier for me to check. Because 8000 has 4 different screens.

I have a Toshiba Techra M2 (S7 – I think – most of the labels on the bottom of the computer are unreadable). Unfortunately, the right hinge broke, can you please provide part numbers for both the right and left hinges?
Thanks
Kevin

Hi! I have a Dell Latitude X300 and the LCD doesn’t stay up.
I don’t have any technical knowledge regarding laptops. From your posts I understand that the hinges might have broken. I am in UK and so can you please suggest the best and the cheapest way to get them replaced..
Your help is appreciated.
Regards,
Cheru

Dath,
The cheapest way would be replacing the hinges yourself. But the hinges are expensive.

Hi, I have a HP Pavilion zv5000 and the laptop screen is becoming loose. How do I check the hinges to see if they are broken?
thanks.

Bobby Sadler,
I think that you might have loose screws. Download HP Pavilion zv5000 Maintenance and service guide here (3.97MB) and tighten screws shown on the page 149 and 150. When you remove the strip cover , shown on the page 138, you can check if the hinges are broken.

Thanks for the reply. I looked at the screws and they are all tight. I noticed in the manual that there is no further subassembly to the Display Assembly. The part of the assembly that rotates on the hinges sometimes makes noise when I open and close the laptop. On the right side every now and then I will have to snap back together the plastic cover around the hinge axis. Is there a good parts dealer to just replace the display assembly?
Thanks!

I have a Toshiba Satellite AS25 with loose screen hinges. Is it possible to tighten them, or do they have to be replaced? Thanks!

Terry,
If hinges are loose, then most likely you can tighten them but it means you have to disassemble your laptop. Here are instructions for a Satellite A20 laptop, I guess it’s similar to your laptop.

Hi,
I have a compaq presario 12XL320 laptop and the display broke loose on me when I opened it this morning. Do I have to replace the whole enclosure base or are there just hinges to replace?
Thanks

I have a Toshiba A15 S129 that has some slop in the display. If open at 90 degrees there is about 10 degrees of loose movement forward but not backward. If I open screen at 45 degrees or less it will not stay, yet simply slam shut under it’s own weight. I’m hoping it is just loose hinges and not broken ones. Do I need to take it apart to check the hinges and screws or can I simply remove the front screen surround cover?

John,
You’ll have to remove the screen bezel (screen surrounding cover) and take a closer look at the hinges. If one of the hinges is broken, you’ll have to take the whole think apart. Here I posted a Satellite A10/A15 laptop disassembly guide.

I didn’t see how to remove the bezel on your link. Do I need tools or do I just pry up on the corner and pop it free?
May 14th, 2008 at 7:20 am
John,
Take a look at disassembly guides for other laptops on http://www.irisvista.com/tech/
Some of them explain how to remove screen bezel and the disassembly steps will be the same for most Toshibas. All you have to do is remove screw seals, remove screws and after that you can remove the bezel.
May 14th, 2008 at 3:26 pm
OK I removed the bezel no problem. The hinges are splined on the ends that run around the screen fram. The rest of the hinge in under the speaker covers. I am thinking the screws to adjust the hinge may be under there on the opposite end of the hinge.
How do I get the speaker covers off?
BTW you have been extremely helpful thus far.
May 14th, 2008 at 3:31 pm
John,
You cannot remove just the speaker covers, you’ll have to remove the whole top cover as it shown in the disassembly guide I linked in the previous comment.

it doesn’t seem as if these hinges are adjustable. Is this correct?
May 14th, 2008 at 3:42 pm
The hinge itself is not adjustable. If it’s loose, probably the hinge is broken inside and has to be replaced.
May 14th, 2008 at 3:53 pm
Thanks so much for the help. I guess I will have to take the monitor out and detach each hinge separately from the case to see which is bad.
Thanks again.

I have a Toshiba Satellite L305D (PSLC8U-03701Q) PC Notebook that I just got back in February and I’ve been noticing that the screen is getting kind of wobbly. I want to fix it now before it gets worse. Is there something I can do at home and is it fairly easy or do I have to get it taken care of by a store? and would these things be covered under a one year manufacture warranty?? thanks.

i have a similar problem which with a bit of tinkering i would probably be able to solve myself but the problem i have is getting access to the hinges in the first place…..i have a dell studio 1737 with a floppy screen because the hinges have slack on them……i cannot find away to remove the casing around the screen to get access to the hinges…..how do i remove the casing in the first place……there are no rubber stoppers around the casing that can be removed to reveal the screws holding this badboy together….heeeeellllllpppppp

Please help, somebody anybody help. My compaq notebook Evo N600c is having display problem. No image or light ray emitted at all. No physical damage to the visual cord nor the inveter and it’s cord. It boots normal and the keyboard is functional. I was told it’s likely to be the graphic chip. Please is there a way out? Can I just brush the logic board with any kind of solvent to fix it?
