I have a Toshiba Satellite A55-S306. I have a broken hinge on my laptop.
I have a Toshiba Satellite A55-S306. I have a broken hinge on my laptop (not sure which one). Which guide should I follow to replace the hinge? Where is the best place to purchase the hinges? I would appreciate any help.
To replace hinges in this model, you have to take apart the display assembly and the laptop base. It is very time consuming repair and you shouldn’t open the case if you have no experience with computer repairs. Unfortunately, I haven’t created a guide for a complete laptop disassembly. The only guide I have will show you how to remove and replace the keyboard. Read through other guides, they all kinda similar and you’ll get an idea how to get inside the laptop.
The hinges for Toshiba Satellite A55 are surprisingly inexpensive. The cheapest hinges I’ve ever seen. The best way to find a hinge is by using Toshiba part number.
Toshiba part number for left hinge – P000402140
Toshiba part number for right hinge – P000402150
Just search through Google using the part number and you’ll find it right away.

Dear Laptopfreak: This is a wonderful site. So glad to have discovered it. Thank you for your great service. I, too, have a Toshiba laptop (which I LOVE)with broken hinges and I am down here in Panama where they are telling me to buy a new computer because I also have a dead cd/dvd rom drive. My computer is: Satellite 5055-S504. Serial #22095577P. They are telling me it will cost $400-$500 in parts alone to fix both problems. Please help! Thank you, JV. p.s. Should I cross post re: the drive?

Jane,
Their estimate is about right. If you bring this laptop for repair to a repair shop in the USA, they will quote you about $110 for each hinge, $160 for the DVD drive (exchange price) or $300 (full price if it’s damaged and cannot be exchanged) plus about $140 in labor. So, minimum expenses would be $520 plus tax, sounds almost like a new laptop.

Oh, that’s NOT good news. I can live without the dvd drive but the hinges are driving me crazy. I just put a new hard drive in this beast 6 months ago and am consequently very reluctant to give up on it. Would you please give me the parts numbers for the hinges? Also, I found a refurbished cd/dvd drive for $119 at Priority Electronics.com. (http://www.priorityelectronics.com/laptop-cdrw/toshiba-satellite.htm) Specs as folllows:
Toshiba Laptop CD-RW/DVD Combo Drives P000333620 Toshiba Satellite 5005-S504, 5005-S507, 5005-S508, 5105-S607, 5105-S608, Series 8X Laptop CDRW/DVD Drive
Product Info: 8X Manufactured by: Toshiba
Would this be an acceptable substitute?
Labor down here is very inexpensive so if I can get the parts cost under control maybe I can save this computer.
Thanks for your great site!
Jane
p.s. Is it possible to repair the hinges or must they be replaced?

Jane,
Broken hinges must be replaced.
I cannot find specifications for Satellite 5055 laptop, but I found that the same hinges were used in Satellite 5005 and Satellite 5105. Probably you can use them too.
Left hinge: P000333550
Right hinge: P000333560
I think this drive should work fine but just in case call PriorityElectronics and talk to the sales person to find out about compatibility issues.

Jairo,
I have created a guide for replacing broken hinges on a Toshiba Satellite A45 notebook, isn’t similar to Satellite A40?
Unfortunately I cannot confirm if the hinges you listed will fit into your laptop. Contact the seller and ask them about any compatibility issue.
February 17th, 2007 at 12:46 pm
Yes the A-45 is similar, I`m going to use that as a reference.
Unfortunally I`m in Caracas Venezuela and the sellers here don`t give to much information about parts so they can sell it to you. I`m going to keep looking about the compatibility
Thanks

Laptop Freak,
Thanks so much for your guides. I read through your instructions for dissasembling the Satellite A45 and it has given me the confidence to dive in and fix the hinge on my aging laptop. One note, however. In your original answer on this page, I think you got the part numbers wrong. If I’m correct, they are:
Toshiba part number for left hinge – P000402150Toshiba part number for right hinge – P000402160
I’ve also seen these part numbers from one vendor; I’m guessing they are equivalent:
left – P000392250
right – P000392260
Again, my sincere thanks!

mermaldad,
You are not correct. I listed everything right:
Hinges for a Satellite A55-S306 notebook are:
Toshiba part number for left hinge – P000402140
Toshiba part number for right hinge – P000402150
P000402160 is a part number for the left speaker. Google for it and you’ll find the answer.

First I would like to apologize, because I do not want to post a comment, instead I would like to ask for help.
I have a Toshiba Satellite SM30-344 with a hinge problem, actually it might be even with the other one. The plastic parts that cover the hinges and hook-up to the plastic covering the laptop (yes it is in one piece) are also broken. If it helps I can send a photo.
Well, I have seen the manuals how to open up the machine and get to the hinges, but I have it extremely hard to find the spare parts numbers for my Toshiba. It is not listed in any spare parts dealer website. Are there maybe similarities with some other Toshiba models like M30-350 or…. .
To resume everything: I would need the spare part numbers for the left and the right hinge and left and right plastic caps that cover the hinges.
I apologize again for asking in this way, but I am really desperate for help.
Thank you in advance!

I’m elated that I found your amazing website!
I have a Satellite A55-S3062 and my left hinge is broken! I’ve gotten extraodinarily high estimates on repair, so I’ve been putting it off (thankfully, the right hinge is keeping the screen upright). I think that I have the correct part number for the left hinge assembly: P000402140. I have a few questions though…
I found the hinge assembly online (have not yet purchased) for about $18…is this right or is an errorr and is just the cover? Other sites have listed it for $70…the price disparity is HUGE!! Also..what is the part number for the cover to the left hinge (mine was bent when the hinge broke). Can I follow your guide to replacing the hinge for a Satellite A-45? And finally, are all steps that you outline in your guide for the A-45 absolutely necessary to gain the proper access to remove and replace the hinge…I’m a little overwhelmed by the number of steps!
Thank you SO much in advance!

Hello, does anybody knows how to dissassembly a Satellite 2450, that is, the one with the small harmankardon speaker on both side of the screen, in order to replace the hinges?

I had my A55-S306 hinges replaced by myself. It took me 2.5 hours. I contacted National Parts Depot. The prices were reasonable. For getting part numbers for order, contact a sales tech by chatting on-line. My CPU fan was worn out and was noisy. I am sure that yours should be the same soon. So replace the CPU fan as well. It costs $10 per each. Good luck

I have a Toshiba Tecra M2 S630 and was able to fix my left hinge by removing it and drilling out the rivet and replacing it with a 6-32×1/4 inch machine screw and a nut. Total cost was $4 for a package of nuts and screws from Radio Shack and about hour and a half of my time.

I have a Toshiba Satellite Pro 4600 which I have used since 2000. I used this laptop everyday and have given me entire satisfaction. I have added more RAM memories and also changed the hard disk several times to larger capacities.
Unfortunately, the right hinge got broken 3 months ago and the left also some time afterwards. Now, I can only use the laptop at home with a heavy object kept behind the open display to keep it upright. I have asked a repair shop and they said that it would cost me about 150 US$. So, I decided not to repair it and use it as it is with a heavy object to keep the open display upright.
Going through the forum, I have not seen a single user of Toshiba Satellite Pro 4600 complaining about broken hinges and how to repair them. Can I solder these two broken hinges?
Thank you,
Richard San Tint

Bought a Satellite 1755 back in 1. Hinges cracked by 2nd year.
I can still fire it upm (on it’s 2nd HD) but it’s permanently stuck open as the hinges have siezed.
Now all these years later, I get the “envelope” from ‘Toshiba Satellite Notebook Class Action’ saying they’ll give me $50 cash or 150 credit on T’s website along WITH a New Cover ass’y (!) to be “honor[ed] on a first-come, first-served basis” due to “limited # of covers avail.”
Ive replaced the keyb’d HD & mic/phones jack ass’y on this already & suspect I can handle cover change (30 yrs exp. in industry) but was wondering if you had the hinge #s in case they aren’t included, & if a svc manual is available to a svc ctr not authorized by Toshiba (us)
