I need to remove and replace the display assembly in Dell Inspiron 1000 laptop
Hi! I have a Dell Insprion 1000 with a dark screen. You can barely make out the images, and sometimes the screen works or it just flickers. When it does work, there is a dark spot that starts in the left corner of the screen. I was told by several people that it needed a new screen. I bought one on ebay. It is the entire monitor. I need to know (fast, so I can return it if it’s bad) how to replace the whole monitor. I know that the hinges have to be taken off somehow….
Just this morning I had to open Dell Inspiron 1000 and I can give you some instructions how you can remove and replace the display assembly.
1. First of all, you have to remove the battery. Never open the laptop is the battery is still connected or you can fry it.
2. Now you have to remove the keyboard securing strip – the piece of plastic located above the keyboard. To remove the strip you have to remove two screws on the back of the laptop first (the side where the VGA and USB ports are located). On the laptop I repaired these screws were marked with letter D. Here is an example of removing the keyboard securing strip from Toshiba Satellite M35X laptop. Steps 5 and 6.
3. After the keyboard securing strip is removed, you can lift up the keyboard. You can disconnect the keyboard from the system board and remove it or just turn it over and place upside down on the palmrest. Be careful with the keyboard connector on the system board.
4. Under the keyboard there is a metal plate. You have to remove the plate to get access to the LCD screen connector on the motherboard. The plate is secured by 7 screws. Remove the screws and lift up the plate.
5. Now you have to unplug the video cable from the connector on the system board. Also you have to remove one screw securing the ground cable (on the video cable) to the laptop base.
6. Finally, you have to remove two screws securing the display assembly to the laptop base. These screws located on the laptop bottom under the hinges. These screws also were marked with letter D. If you didn’t disconnect the keyboard in the step 3 then you have to keep it when you removing display screws.
7. After the screws are removed, you can lift up the display assembly and replace it.

Hello!
I have a Toshiba Satellite 5105 s607 with a busted outer casing. What I would like to do is seperate the lcd screen from the base and use it as a “desktop” machine.
Do they make long lcd ribbon cables? If so, where can I get one?
Also, would length of the cable affect the video input?

Metal,
There are no special long ribbon cables, at lease I haven’t seen any of them. The video cable is long enough to connect the LCD screen to the motherboard/video card, but it will not allow you to move the display far away from the laptop base.
You can remove the laptop display panel completely and get video output on an external monitor by connecting it to the laptop VGA port. Here’s a guide for taking apart Satellite 5105 notebook just in case you need it.

I need to access the top of the mother board of a Sony Vaio PCG-NV190 laptop. I have searched the web, reviewed the service manual and talked to some knowledgeable friends but have been unable to figure out how to remove the Assy Hood Keyboard and thus the keyboard. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

bigdan,
I don’t work with Sony notebooks and cannot guide you through the disassembly process. Take a loot at this guide, maybe the notebook is somehow similar to yours?

Thanks for the response. The guide did not answer my need but I will keep looking.

i have a dell inspiron 1150 notebook that was showing BIOS error messages but would eventually work, only it made grinding noises. i took it apart, cleaned the fan and heatsink. then when i started it the screen was blank, no color at all. i hooked up an external monitor and it showed nothing as well. i read one of your responses and figured my screen and video cables were fine and that the hd was shot, but i loaded it into a hd enclosure and was able to access my data and download it to another notebook. does this probably mean my hd is fine, but the motherboard or the video card is bad? do you know if the video card is built into the motherboard?

Dear Laptop Freak,
I have a Dell Inspiron 1000 and I hooked up an external moniter to the VGA port so I could use my laptop while I ordered a replacement screen. I installed the new screen just as you instructed and it worked perfectly. My problem now is that I cannot change the resolution back to the original setting in the display properties menu. A dialog box pops up and says that the operation is cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer and I need to contact the system administrator. I’m stuck. Do you have any suggestions?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Dear Laptop Freak,
I have a Dell Latitude 110L and the chassis looks identical to the Inspiron 1000. Do you have a detailed image of the video connector on the Inspiron 1000? Also, do the display replacement instructions in the Latitude 110L Service Manual look identical to the procedure used for the Inspiron 1000?
Thanks
