When I boot my Dell Inspiron 8100 laptop it does nothing
I am very PC friendly. I have been working on them since I was 9. I am now 26. But I have never messed with any laptop until now. I have a dell Inspiron 8100, 512 MB ram, 60 GB HD. when I boot it does NOTHING. I get the power, battery, and charge light to flash for 1 second and then just the power light comes on. NOTHING else happens… no fan, no hard drive noise/spin, screen stays completely black. What can this be? Thank you.
I think you should start to troubleshoot the laptop with testing/replacing the memory. You can find disassembly manual for Dell Inspiron 8100 notebook on Dell website. If you have two memory modules installed remove them one by one. Remove the memory from slot B and try to turn on the laptop. Then install it back and remove the module from the slot A. Try to turn on again. If you have only one memory stick, move it from one slot to another. Find a known good test memory and try if it works. That is simple stuff, see if it helps.
