Toshiba Satellite 1410 screen won’t stay upright
My daughter’s Toshiba Satellite 1410 screen won’t stay upright – just happened today – any thoughts on how to tighten?
If the laptop display just suddenly became loose and doesn’t stay upright, them most likely the display hinge or hinges are broken. You cannot really tighten a broken hinge, you have to replace it. To replace the display hinge in this model you have to take apart the display assembly and remove the top cover from the laptop base. Hinges are pretty expensive; you can find them on the internet around $70 a piece plus shipping cost. If you want to replace them yourself, I can help you to find the part number so you can search for it on the net. Leave a comment with the laptop full name and model, something like Toshiba Satellite 1410-S173, PS141U-01F3WV

Kale,
I can help you to find part numbers but I need the laptop model number (PSA10U-number). There are a few different A10 modifications.
You’ll find it on the same sticker with the serial number.

You have a great web site thanks for all the help you are providing. I have read enough here to know that I need P000347850 BRAKE HINGE RIGHT and P000347860 BRAKE HINGE LEFT. I have seen the step by step directions with pictures on how to remove LCD. http://www.irisvista.com/tech/laptops/Toshiba1415/sat1415_LCD.htm I have also seen pictures of the hinges, there huge! How do I get those suckers in there. I guess I need step by step instructions on how to install them. I have a Toshiba Satellite 1415-S105.

Larry, Lefty Padilla,
For a laptop with 15 inches LCD screen you can use the following hinges/LCD brackets:
A000009360, A000009370, A000009380. Both brackets has the same part number and arrive together. You can use either part number, should be backward comparable.

Edward,
For a Toshiba Satellite a15-s157 laptop with 15″ LCD screen and letter “S” stamped on the base you can use the following hinges:
Left hinge: P000377630
Right hinge: P000377640
I think you can find hinges if you search on Google by the part number.

I have a toshiba a15-s157 and after reading all the post, I did not find anybody with this model, I have the same hinges issue, my screen goes all the way back very loose. The letter on the back is the S, do you have the part number and a place to order them from?
Thanks
Edward

Jim,
You’ll have to remove the display bezel and take a closer look at both hinges. Probably you’ll have to replace both hinges.

I have a Toshiba A45-S151 and like many people, the lid falls over easily. I notice the hinge parts sometimes are referred to as having a brake. Do both hinges have the brake. The brake seems to be what is wrong with mine. Do I need to order both?

Melissa,
Your laptop model has a few different variations.
Take a look under the battery and a small letter “P” or “C” or “S” stamped on the case. Sometimes this letter is stamped somewhere on the bottom of the laptop but not under the battery. Anyways, to figure out part numbers for your hinges you’ll have to find this letter.
For cases with letter “P” or “C”
left hinge: P000392930
right hinge: P000392940
For cases with letter “S”
left hinge: P000377630
right hinge: P000377640

Now from what I hear, it’s only the right speaker hinge that holds it upright, correct? Meaning the only thing in the left speaker is a free “loose” hinge.

I have a Toshiba Satellite 1400 PS140C-03D07P. Can you tell me the part number for the hinge(s)? Are there 2 separate hinges or one?
Thanks,
Phil

My Toshiba Satellite Notebook Model A40-221, Model No. PSA40E-08M7W-AR, Serial No. 14766057G has its LCD flopping backwards in certain positions but maintains an upright state in yet other positions. I am told that it is due to a broken hinge on the right when facing the screen. I would be grateful if you could assist in sourcing this hinge/hinges.

OK, sorry, you wanted FULL name and . I’m looking for a brake hinge for a Toshiba Satellite A15-s157 PSA10U-01C8WV

OK, so I took my entire computer apart once again in search of a part number for my broken hinge, took the hinge completely out, turned it over several times, and found no part number anywhere. Does anyone know the part number for the left brake hinge for a Toshiba Satellite A15-s157? Where does one obtain such a part number other than on the part itself? And why wouldn’t the part number be somewhere on the part? Thanks for any help.

Regarding my previous post – upon closer examination of the pictures of the brake hinge assembly, i see that the “sleeve” to which I referred, the piece that is broken on my laptop, is indeed a part of the whole hinge assembly. thanks for the help Todd!

Lynette,
Left hinge: P000368300
Right hinge: P000378510
You can find new hinges here if you search by the part number.

I have a Toshiba A25-S2792 that needs new hinges. Do you have part numbers for this? Also do you know where i can find instructions for replacing them? Thank you for any help!

I had the same problem (well still do but I am repairing it) The hinge is actually all one peice. There is no replacing the “sleeve” sorry to say. the new hinges can be had for approximately $60 apeice. Go to toshiba’s webstie and click support and find out their authorized part supplier. It is National Part Depot and the yahve them for $60 plus shipping.
good luck!

Hey, it looks like a lot of people are having the same problem I do, but I don’t think new hinges are the answer for everybody. Read on to see what I mean.
My Toshiba A-15 S157 laptop worked great for four years, but recently the screen stopped staying up on its own. I thought a hinge was broken, but I decided to follow the disassembly instructions on
http://www.irisvista.com/tech/ before ordering new hinges, just to make sure that was really the answer. The laptop has to be almost entirely disassembled to get to the hinges, but after doing so I found that the hinges themselves were entirely intact on both sides.
A little snooping around revealed that the actual problem was that the little metal “sleeve” (for lack of a better term) which is located right next to the speaker and into which the hinge goes was broken, so the end of the left hinge is now free-floating, providing no help to the right hinge in supporting the screen, which is why it won’t stay up.
After I put my computer back together, I could tell that this was the case because even when assembled I can wiggle the left side of my screen around (up and down, mostly) because the hinge isn’t actually IN anything other than the metal speaker cover.
I’m writing both to warn other Toshiba laptop users having the same problem before they buy expensive new hinges which won’t actually solve their problem, and also to ask if anyone knows the part number for the piece I’m looking for, the “sleeve” into which the hinge goes on the speaker end of things.
I’ve done some looking around, and I think it just might be called the “(brake) hinge insulator”, but I’m having trouble finding a picture paired with that term so I can make sure. If I’m right, then this piece is significantly cheaper than ordering a new hinge, and may actually be what many posters actually need to fix their laptops.
If anyone can help me out with a part number for the piece I’m looking for that would be great. It seems to be welded to a larger, “L” shaped piece located just forward (towards the user) of the speaker, more or less under the edge of the keyboard. The only markings I could find was the number ” #1-1 ” imprinted on the piece. Thanks everyone, and good luck!

Here’s what I did…
I scavenged some sections of 1×2 wood (actually its 3/4″ by 1.75).
I then made a hinged support where the vertical section end met with the horizontal end (this enables it to be self-supporting).

I made the horizontal section long enough to extend from the front to about 2″ past the back of the base and the vertical section tall enough to meet the top of the display when set up at a slightly rearward angle (best for my viewing pleasure).
You may need to use different lengths to match your needs, but this should give you a good idea.
parts list:
1 section of 1×2 cut into 4 (or 6 if you prefer) sections of appropriate length.
2 (or 3) hinges
6 screws per hinge
Hope this is useful as a temporary fix of for those of us that are temporarily broke.

I have a Toshiba (laptop) Satellite 5205-S503 PS52OU-2SZRHV. When I opened it yesterday, it made some loud cracking noises and now the screen falls either forward or backward when it’s open. I’m assuming broken hinge(s) – where do I find the part(s) and manual for disassembly?? Thanks!

Hajni,
Check out here: sparepartswarehouse.com I would say they have a good price for hinges. If it’s still expensive you should use a wall to support the screen until you graduate and find a good paying job.
Just kidding.
I don’t know what “cheap” means for a starving student.

Jayson,
I don’t think you’ll find this magic screw, you’ll have to replace the hinges.
