After Windows XP screen I get a blue screen error and my laptop restarts

I have a Toshiba Satellite P20 laptop and I am experiencing booting problems. My laptop suddenly turned off while I was defragmenting drive C. Now when I turn it on it shows the Toshiba screen then a screen requesting to chose between normal starting of Windows, safe mode etc but whichever I chose I get the Windows XP screen then a blue screen and then the machine restarts and all over again. I would appreciate any help from you. Thank you.

I think you have a bad hard drive. You can test the hard drive with Hitachi drive fitness test utility; it should work fine with most laptop hard drives. This utility is free and I use it almost every day. Toshiba Satellite P20 doesn’t have a floppy drive, so you should download a CD image and burn it on CD. After that you boot the laptop from the CD by pressing F12 on laptop start up and choosing CD drive. It’s pretty easy to start the test and if you have any question you can download a user manual. If the hard drive fails the test, you’ll get a red window at the end. In this case you’ll have to replace the hard drive.

OK, I only send you the “hard” ones (like the Toshiba 2-memory stick problem – which I’m still working on). But anyway, I’ve managed to “crash” an XP laptop as follows: I’m having a 98(SE)-XP(SE) peer-to-peer network challenge (gee, maybe MS could have addressed this by now). Been running a mixed 98/XP network w/ about 5 98 & 8 XP computers for a few years now. Using following protocols: Client for & File-Printer Sharing for MS + QoS Packet Sched. + NWLink NetBIOS & IPX/SPX/NetBIOS CTP + TCP/IP + AEGIS Protocol (IEEE 802.1x), (but not NetBUEI). All machines can get to I-net via ntwk. router/modem and all send/rcv. eml. just fine. Although Explorer w/ XP’s are a bit slow to locate and open 98’s, they’re fine once they acquire these and this all works pretty well – up until now.
In past few weeks, 2 new XP machines only want to ‘see’ other XP machines, not 98 (Ntwk Neigh./Explorer only show the 98 machines). 98, however, sees them just fine. “Ping” tests work fine either direction so it doesn’t seem to be hardware-related. Wizard and “repair” don’t help and both these new machines seem to have the identical settings to the other XP’s that do work.
I tried NetBUEI on these 2, plus on 1-98 machine w/ following results: 1 of the 2 XP’s now see all the 98’s (even the 4-5 that don’t have NetBUEI) –so far, so good. 2nd XP worked for a day and then started “blue screens” w/ NetBUEI loaded when it tries to access network (“DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, 0×0….D1”), so I ‘unchecked’ it for now. I’d go w/ NetBUEI and (maybe) solve this except for the “crashing” which obviously won’t work.
Haven’t yet tried to run the “other computers setup diskette” on the 98 machines, that the MS Ntwk. wizard creates (reluctant to ‘mess’ w/ the rest of the system – since all the other XPs work and I’m not sure what this disk will modify).
Thoughts, suggestions, etc. since this is trying to drive me nuts (short drive).

I have a Sony Vaio notebook that has a power problem and won’t start. The hard drive is fine and I can access all the data by using an IDE-to-USB cable and plugging it into my Toshiba Tecra 9000. My problem is that I need to “boot” off of the Sony hard drive (Hitachi – 2.5″) in order to recover some files that were in a Microsoft My Private Folder.
Question: Can I connect my Sony hard drive to my Toshiba via a USB connector and “boot” off of this hard drive? The Toshiba BIOS is Version 1.5. Thanks!

    Steve,

Nope, you cannot. This notebook will not boot from an external USB hard drive.
You can try this. Not sure if it’s going to work but it’s worth trying. You can try accessing data using a live Linux CD. I usually use Knoppix and like it very much. Download the latest version of Knoppix (.iso image) and burn it on a CD. You’ll need a desktop with 2 optical drives; one of them should be able burn CDs or DVDs. Boot the desktop computer from the Knoppix CD and you’ll get an environment similar to Windows. Connect the Sony hard drive to the desktop computer via USB connection and a new icon should pop up on the desktop – that’s will be your hard drive. Check if you can access the data you need. If the data is accessible, you can burn it on a CD/DVD using the K3B burner.
When you say “My Private Folder” I assume it’s encrypted. I’m not really sure if Knoppix can access encrypted files/folders but I would try.

Thanks for the prompt reply – the “My Private Folder” is a Microsoft program and, to answer your question, there is encryption involved. Can I simply take out the Hitachi 2.5″ drive from my Toshiba and replace it with the Hitachi 2.5″ drive from my Sony and then boot up? Will that work?

    Steve,
If Toshiba and Sony notebooks have similar hardware, it might work.

Im also having the same type of problem. I have a Toshiba satellite T2400 and whenever i try to start my computer I will get a blue screen message right before the boot screen and my computer will try to restart itself. Then the same thing will keep happening again and again..
Now the crazy part is that I remember once when it messed up it said my LAN port was not found or corrupted so during the boot I pressed F2 for the system utilities and disabled the LAN function under the advanced menu. When I did this the computer worked fine but when it starts I have no internet conection since it is disabled. My wireless works fine but since I am in the dorms for college we have to run on LAN.
I also took my computer in to get checked but they told me nothing was wrong with any of the hardware or drivers and just said it was the OS. They also told me to use my recovery disks but when I tried to use the default settings(which the LAN is turned back on) i got the blue screen right before the recovery disk completely loaded.
I know there is something wrong with my LAN port but i have no Idea how to fix it or how to get started on fixing this problem. If anyone has any suggestions please help.

    Steven,
So you reinstalled the operating system and the laptop still has the same problem? Sounds like a hardware related issue. If there is something with LAN port on the motherboard, probably there is no simple solution to fix it. Make sure the laptop is running the latest BIOS, update the BIOS if needed. I think you still should be able to use a PCMCIA LAN card. Just stick it into available PC slot and connect the network cable.

    Hi everyone!
I have a powerproblem with my Toshiba Satellite P20. It seems that the power connection on the computer is bad, for some reason, (maybe the motherboard). It will work fine with the battery, but now the battery is almost dead. How can i attache the AC/DC to the battery pins inside the computer, or how can i recharge the battery with my AC/DC? Greatful for all help.

I have been able to get onto Windows normally though by inserting a linux start-up disk just before the XP loading bar starts. This works and i always have to hibernate my computer – whats happened?! 1. Download “Memtest86+” and test memory. If it fails test, replace the faulty memory module.
    2. Run hard drive diagnostics. If the hard drive fail test, replace it.
    3. If both the hard drive and memory pass test, try reinstalling the operating system from scratch.

There is no simple answer to your question.
