I think my Acer notebook (Aspire 1355xc) is overheating

I think my Acer notebook (aspire 1355xc) is overheating. It’s just over 2 years old now, and the fan is constantly coming on. Months ago it would come on very rarely but for the last few weeks it comes on almost every 5-10 minutes.
It may be nothing, but I’m getting a little worried here and wouldn’t want it go bust so I figured I’d ask just to make sure.
I did some googleing and found some advice on maybe the CPU is being used by some program of some sort and did the troubleshooting that was there but there seems to be no virus or hidden program, not from the results I got anyway.
Without going on, I would like to know what to do. I have no warranty and the manufacturer said they would charge me just to take a look at the issue, never mind fixing it.
Please reply with any help that you can offer, I’d be much grateful.

You are right. When the laptop fan is constantly coming on, it might indicate an overheating problem. Overtime the CPU heat sink clogs with lint and dust and the cooling fan has to turn on more often to cool down the CPU. You can try to clean the heat sink without taking the laptop apart. You can buy a can of compressed air and blow out dust from the heat sink and the fan. Most likely it will fix your problem.
By the way, I know that some people successfully cleaned up their laptops with a vacuum.

I have an Acer Aspire 3610 and the screen goes white where I can barely see the images on the screen and I’m frozen. Not sure if this is a power issue that can be resolved with a new battery or something more serious. Any ideas before I send it in for tech repair? Thanks

    John,

Not a common problem at all and it’s hard to guess what is wrong. Test the laptop with an external monitor attached and if the external video works fine, probably there is nothing wrong with the motherboard/graphics card.
Here are some possible culprits: 1) LCD screen 2)loose connection between the video cable and LCD/motherboard 3) bad video cable and 4) something wrong with the graphics card.
Reseating the video cable on the LCD and motherboard might help. It might be just a loose connection.
Do you get a good image on startup and then it washes out or it’s always like that? Can you get a normal image back if you torque the screen a little bit? If yes, then most likely it’s a screen problem.

I have Satellite L25 and touch pad gets so hot that I can burn my finger. Fan works in my opinion just fine. Computer gets warm to hot on the bottom below keyboard area and touch pad gets very hot. What should I do to fix this problem?
    Thank you in advance!

    Laptop Freak Says:

    Sara,
That’s where the wireless card is located, as it shown on the step 2 in the Satellite L25 disassembly guide (www.irisvista.com). Try removing the wireless card and test the laptop without it. If it’s not hot anymore – the wireless card is your problem. When it’s bad, it might get hot.

I have a Acer 3620 and the problem is that about a mount ago his speed has been reduced significantly. It all starts fine when I start my computer but it appears when I play some game after some time playing the image starts to slow down and I’m only getting like an image per second. The interesting thing is that after some time it regains his speed and everythig is fine. But later does the same thing over again.
I tough it has some virus or something so I have formated it and reinstalled Windows Xp with all the drivers downloaded from acer. I’m still having the same problem. Any toughs what might my problem be and how to fix it?

The same thing happened to my Acer 3620 laptop. But in my case the computer would shutdown after playing a game or watching a movie. It would also get really slow so I was going to format the computer but I found out that even during the copying of the windows xp files for the format, it would also shutdown. Thats when i found out that it was a heat problem. I cleaned it with a compressed air can and it is working fine until now.

My Aspire 3640 is doing the same exact thing! The laptop bottom gets too hot to touch, and the computer shuts off whenever I try to burn a CD or watch a movie. Also, the fan is very loud! I am very frustrated with Acer, and their customer service is not very helpful. :(

    Hi all,

Ive owned my Acer travelmate 660 for about 4 years now.
Its a centrino chip and I have always had trouble with this laptop….but budget prevents be getting a new one!
Acers customer service is absolutely atrotious, as is there service centre. my laptop went back 5 times, and on 3 occasions came back with a different fault in addition to the un-fixed overheating problem.
I finally sent the laptop to a back-street repair shop and they charged me £60 to replace the bus chip which appeared to work fine…no more laptop shutting down! Obviously, just after the 3 months warranty was up it started playing up overheating again. Watching anything on youtube is 100% guaranteed to overheat the laptop and cause it to suddenly shut down. the fan runs most of the time….even when the cpu is only running at 10 to 20%. if I hear the fun running at full speed (frequently) then I know that I have probably only 30 seconds before it shuts off. Have tried vacuums etc etc on the vents and Ive practically had the entire thing in bits to remove dust….to no avail.
Did anyone on here ever get this problem and more importatly – DID THEY EVER GET IT FIXED!!!!

On Acers, it may be the wireless card. That what it was on my girlfirends. As soon as I removed it from the system, and used a usb wireless adapter, everything started working correctly again.

MY overheating concern is just the opposite of most of your posts -I noticed my fan RARELY! comes on. I have an Acer 5630 intel core duo processor. I’ve noticed the touch pad and an area just to the left of it get pretty hot -But the fan doesn’t come on. How do I tell if the fan is broken? Can I check the CPU temperature in the control panel somewhere?

I’ve same ACER Aspire 3620 laptop problem like most of you here. My laptop becomes very hot everytime I use it. Then last 4 months, the power ON button malfunction suddenly (can not start the laptop). I brought my laptop for service at Acer Service Center and they charged me RM250 (RM100 for labour charge + RM150 for replacing the whole uppercase(the whole keyboard)) and they said the problem is something to do with Standby button. Unfortunate, the overheating problem getting worst and shutdown automatically even I’m opening the simple program. But things vice versa, when I want to shutdown the laptop, it’ll not shutdown completely and I noticed that updating new program will not completely download. I hope someone could help me rectify this problem in the easiest way as I’m still a student.

Did you try cleaning the laptop heatsink? As I mentioned in the post, you can buy a can of compressed air and spray it inside the air intakes on the bottom (or side) of the laptop.

when I want to shutdown the laptop, it’ll not shutdown completely and I noticed that updating new program will not completely download.

Could be software related issue. You can backup all personal files and after that reinstall OS and software from the recovery disc. This procedure will take care of all software related issues.

Noticed a lot of Acer problems..

On my Aspire 5630, after approximately 30 minutes, it would shut down. Near the back of my laptop I would feel it getting increasingly hotter.

Easy solution, go to the Acer EPower management, set the brightness to 0% and the CPU Speed to Low. No more overheating, no more shutting down.

Acers customer service is disgusting, 2 years old, last time I sent it back was about a year ago. After sending it in because the mousepad was broken (the 3rd time its been sent in), they formatted it, and sent it back without touching the hardware. Same thing happened when I discovered I had a defective wireless card.

I’ve sworn off Acer since. Never go with them again. Unfortunately I’m still stuck with this defective laptop…

I have a little icon of a plug on my taskbar.

    Right Click > Brightness > 0%
Right Click > CPU Speed > Low

If it’s not there, your computer may very well not have every aspect of it controlled by Acer.

Consider yourself lucky if that’s the case…

ANY OVERHEATING PROBLEMS ARE USUALLY DO TO DUST. I HAVE AN AIR COMPRESSOR (LIKE FER UR CAR^^) IT WORKS AWESOME> LOOKS LIKE U THREW DIRT IN THE LAPTOP CUS WHEN U BLOW IT OUT THEIRS TONS OF IT THAT FLIES OUT. NOW I CAN LEAVE THE LAPTOP ON MY BED WHERE IT CAN”T REALLY MOVE THE AIR AND IT NEVER OVERHEATS> SO BLOW IT OUT. NOW WITH YOUR MOUTH. USE COMPRESSED AIR AND THE BEST PLACE IS TO BLOW IT WHERE THE FAN IS. ON AN ASPIRE 3620, blow on the right side where the heat sinnk is and on the bottom where the fan is.

I have an Acer Aspire 3620 that shuts down after just a few minutes. I’ve cleaned the heat sink and re-doped the processor and video chip. Still shuts down.

I did notice that the fan only runs at one speed. Should it speed up when the unit gets hot or is it merely a one speed fan? Would replacing the fan help?

    Thanks

    Hi there,
I own an Acer Travelmate that also had overheating problems. I discovered the source to be Windows Vista, which overclocked the system’s processor about 15% (300MHz too much).

I could fix it by adjusting the enegry settings. For a detailed explanation check : http://www.ruelke.org/blog-entry-134.html

    Cheers,
