My notebook fan has been bursting away on full power which is very uncommon
I have an Acer Aspire 1520 (1525WLMi). NVIDIA GeForce FX Go 5700, 64MB.
Just recently I noticed strange hot air coming out of my cooling vents on the right side of my notebook. Also, my fan has been bursting away on full power which is very uncommon. I also noticed when working with graphics, animations and while playing games that my notebook begins to lag a lot and graphics aren’t displayed properly.
I am assuming it’s due to my Graphics card and/or graphics card fan.
What advice do you have for me and are there any tools/utilities that you can refer me to in order for me to test my graphics card and graphics card fan?
I think that this problem might be related to the CPU overheating. When a processor overheats, the entire system might slow down. Animations and games require a lot of CPU power, so it runs hotter and overheats faster. That’s why the cooling fan blowing full power. Before you start testing the hard ware, check if the heat sink is clogged and clean it up. I’m not familiar with Acer laptops and not sure if you can easily access the heat sink from the bottom.

Hi
I have a Toshiba A105-S4384 notebook. I just installed a non-oem Vista Business on it and installed all the Toshiba supplied Vista drivers I found on the Toshiba website.
The problem I have is that the Fn-F# key combinations don’t seem to work. For example I can’t get to switch the display from LCD to external display or change the brightness of the display. I have installed the latest intel drivers for the display from the Toshiba site.
Please help..
Thanks

Lahiruwan,
I’m running Vista Ultimate edition on my Toshiba Satellite R15 Tablet PC and I had exactly the same problem until yesterday. None of my function keys worked. I downloaded some Toshiba utilities for my laptop and now they all work fine. It’s possible that function key driver for your model will be released later. Just wait for a while.

I have a brand new Fujitsu S Series lifebook and about a week ago windows decided that it wanted to corrupt a start up file. Anyways got that fixed but ever since then my fan does not shut off and my laptop just pours out the heat even when I have nothing running. My battery life went from about 4 hours running 5-6 big programs to about 1h30m with one or two small programs running. Now my system runs extremely slow. Any idea whats wrong? Any help would be great thanks.

Mike,
Maybe the heat sink is clogged with dust and you should clean it. You can buy a can of compressed air and blow off the dust.
Does the fan run full speed even when you are in the BIOS (probably overheating) or it happens only in Windows (might be software issue)?

I just loaded vista on a brand new dell d420 with d gig ram. I think this is a vista problem. My cooling fan did not run constantly on xp – now it won’t start and the bottom of the machine is always hot. Anyone have any ideas or a place to ask for help?

Mark Friedman,
Check if there is a newer version of BIOS available for your laptop.
