My Toshiba TE2000 has recently started to fail on boot up
I have a Toshiba TE2000 (which seems to have been marketed variously as a Tecra or Satellite Pro series), bought in 2002 so the warranty has expired.
It has recently started to fail on boot up. The AC light comes on when power is plugged in, but no boot. No disk spinning up or POST or anything - just the AC light flashing once.
I have found that when the battery is charged (it is pretty much stuffed and will only run the system a few minutes) I can usually start the laptop by removing the AC input, pressing start - system starts booting - and then re-plugging the AC input.
What diagnostics can I conduct to identify the cause?
Also, you have a great pictorial guide on dissecting a TE2100 - is this sufficiently close to the TE2000 (barring the built-in wireless card) if I need to go down that road?
Disassembly guide for Toshiba TE2000 should be sufficiently close to Toshiba TE2100, I guess even the same. We noticed that most of the time a laptop fails on boot up because of a faulty connection between the power board and the system board. You can try to reconnect the power board to the system board. Occasionally reseating the power board fixes the problem. I have posted some tips for faulty Toshiba TE2100 laptops here.

Jay,
I think you might have a problem with the hard drive. Test it with Hitachi’s drive fitness test and replace the hard drive if it fails the test.

I have a Toshiba R10 which just stopped working. In fact, the battery discharged from full to empty in a matter of 15 minutes before it stopped working. Now it will not work from either the battery or AC adapter. I get the following error code whenever I try to boot up from the AC adapter:
4 short, 1 long, 3 short, pause and repeat
I suppose that the blinking yellow / amber light is some code for something, but I cannot figure out what the problem is. Please help!

Hi..
I have an ECS A929 laptop. I recently installed mozilla foxfire after having tons of trouble installing Adobe reader. Ever since it asked me to reboot, it starts as usual, like it’s being normal, but never goes further than the windows xp screen where the little progress bar shows. it then goes back to the beginning and tries to boot up. It would do it forever if I didn’t turn it off. I tried to change the boot sequence in the BIOS, but i finally figured out that the IDE CDROM is NOT FOUND…I have my original CD, but it won’t recognize it…What do i do??? I hope you can help…
Thanks, Jess

Hi,
My Dell Inspiron 9300 refuses to boot on AC adapter, with or without battery installed!
The brief history of the laptop is as follows:
I bought the laptop a little bit longer than one year and a half ago. Last year, I accidentally spilled water on it. It shut off by itself, but somebody turned it on immediately, it shut off by itself again. Then it won’t boot. I took the laptop apart, blew dry all the parts, and put them back together. It boots, but only when the battery has power in it AND the AC adapter is NOT plugged in. Isn’t that weird?!
Last week, the laptop was off when I came back home (it was on when I went out). I found the light on the AC adapter was off by itself, and then the battery was drained. That was why the laptop was off. But I really had a very hard time turning it back on. Somehow the battery had a little power left, just enough to turn it back on, and within literally a second I plugged the AC power in and started charging the battery.
Now the laptop is working again. But I am very annoyed by the fact that if the battery goes bad eventually, the laptop will be useless.
Can someone please give me some hint? What possibly went wrong? How can I fix it?
Thanks a lot!
James

Hello, I am not sure if I can write this here but you guys seem like you know your stuff. I just listed my laptop on ebay as repair because the screen falls due to loose hinges I guess. Anyways, this morning it sold for $250 (dell c640), I realize I could of gotten more for it, but then when I tried to turn it on and it did not go on, i tried a new battery and nothing. I also tried a different charger and nothing, I even took the battery out. NOTHING! No lights, no anything. I am not the best with laptops but I tried fixing the loose hinges by rigging it. I took the LCD case off and put some paper behind the hinged to make friction and then I tied string in between the hinged to hold it better because I couldn’t find a way to tighten them (lol, dont laugh at me!) …. Anyways I know for a fact I put all the screws back in wrong places, big ones where little ones should go etc… one was even pushing the case out cuz the screw was so long so I took it out. Do you think this could of screwed up anything because now 1 week later after that it doesnt work. HELP PLEASE, i should be shipping this thing out not trying to fix it. Thanks!
