My Dell laptop will start up just fine but after the desktop picture comes up it freezes

Hey I was just wondering if you might know anything about what problem I’m having, my Dell Latitude D505 series will start up just fine it’s when I enter my password and it starts to load, when its doing so, it freezes, the desktop picture comes up but nothing else shows, it just stays at that and loads. If you could respond to this and hopefully tell me what could be wrong with it I would greatly appreciate it.

My first guess would be that you have corrupted software. Try to boot your laptop in a safe mode by pressing F8 on start up. If the laptop works fine in a safe mode, then you can reinstall the operating system and get it back up and running. If you remember when the problem occurred for the first time, you can use Windows system restore utility to revert the operating system back.
Also, it might be a hardware related problem, most likely a failing hard drive. You can download Hitachi drive fitness test utility and test the hard drive. This utility is free and will work for most laptop hard drives. If the hard drive fails the test, you’ll have to replace it.

Try refreshing your desktop. Try turning on/off active desktop. Adjust your monitor/video settings, refresh rate etc. No change?

    It could also be:

    1. Too many programs loading on boot (try selective start-up)
    2. An active virus/spyware/trojan etc. (use anti-virus)
    3. Insufficient/failing RAM (try upgrading or replacing)
    4. Failing video chip (worst case; replace motherboard)

    Hope this helps.

Problem since buying replacement battery for my Compaq Presario 1520us. With new battery and NO a/c, the computer will get to the WinXP startup screen and eventually freeze. HOWEVER, if I have a/c connected, I get into WinXP just fine and can even remove the a/c and it continues to run on the battery. Also, without the a/c connected, I can get into WinXP in SAFE mode. I assume that some power management driver in WinXP is having a problem with the new battery on startup.

    Any ideas or suggestions?

    Thanks,
    Doug

    Doug,
Do you have any HP power management software installed on the laptop or you running it with basic Windows XP software? If you have only Windows XP software, try installing HP software. If you have HP software installed, uninstall it and try Windows XP utility. See if it makes any difference. Check if you have the latest version of BIOS, upgrade the BIOS if it’s necessary.

    Laptop freak–

I solved the problem (at least for a while) by removing the battery from device manager and then restarting the computer. I had no problems for a couple of weeks but the problem started again today–freeze at WinXp logo unless the a/c is attached. I am now in the process of updating to SP2 (that certainly is no joy) and will see if the problem persists.

I have an older Toshiba Tecra 8100 that freezes on me.
If I boot in safe mode everything is great. If I disable the sound (while in safe mode) and reboot, everything is fine. It has a new hd and i just swapped the sound board (same issue). Anyone have any suggestions?

hi my dell laptop was working fine untill recently, but i have made no new modifications to anything…

basically, when i plug in my laptop’s power cord, the computer freezes. if i allow the laptop to run without being plugged in, it will work fine…. but once plug it in, it freezes and i have to reboot. infact, if i reboot and have the plug in it, it still freezes after maybe 10 seconds of Windows starting up…. what could be the problem???

    Liza,
What if you remove the battery and start the laptop just from the AC adapter? Will it freeze in this case?

If this is an emergency situation, you can do the following.
    1. Remove the hard dive from the laptop.
    2. Install it into an external USB enclosure.
    3. Connect the USB enclosure to another working computer.
    4. Access the hard drive and recover your report.

Here’s more information about connecting your hard drive to another computer.

I have Dell Inspiron 5100 Laptop with simular problem the Dell Latitude D505 has, it starts up normally and I can sign in, the system tray comes up with all my Icons and I’m able to move my cursor and if lucky get on the internet then the computer freezes up and I can’t move the cursor. Dell did a Dell Connect to look at my computer and did tests, the bottom line, Dell is telling me to get a back up hard drive to transfer my files over and then do a restore. We had to do all this in Safe Mode since thats the only way operating system works. Restoring may work but I feel reformatting may be the only answer other than going back to manufacture default procedure. Can you give any clues as to what my problem is? Thank you.

My 9100 is doing the “flash the little green light and do nothing thing” after being plugged up to ac power for an hour it boots and freezes will sometimes run 10-15 min and some times it won’t fully boot before it does it.When killed by holding the power button it will not boot right back up, after 10-15 min it will boot again. It does the same thing in safe mode or normal. After 4-5-6 times of holding the power button and forcing it off after it locks up it will boot and run for days and in one case 8 days continuos non stop internet, durning music all at the same time.. never missed a beat.It has NEVER had an error message or poped up anything like that.It powered down normal and after shutting down, just for grins I powered it up again ran it on the net for about 40 min no problem.its been off for 10 days and its all started over doing the same thing.Does the fact that it does the same freeze routine in safe mode mean its hardware?Does the fact that it has on 4 different occations eventually quit and work great for long periods with out freezing mean the software is ok? HELP anyone !
