I turn on the power button on my laptop and it powers up. No Toshiba graphic appears, not even the backlight.

Thanks for making your site; it has some very useful information. Unfortunately I have an error for which I could not find a solution on your site.

I have an M35x-s149 Toshiba laptop. One day it started acting up… I turn on the power button, and the power management system powers up CD-ROM etc has sustainable power. However nothing appears on the screen. No Toshiba graphic appears, not even the backlight. Also the wireless internet connection will not activate, and finally I noticed where normally the green HD light would be blinking rapidly, it  will now only blink a couple of times upon pressing the power button then cease to flash until I power off again.

I’ve tried plugging the laptop into an external monitor. No display. And I’ve checked the cooling fan outlet and it doesn’t appear to be clogged.

Any ideas what the problem might be? Is it a burned out hard drive? I would have thought at least the Toshiba graphic would appear if the HD was burnt out. Would appreciate any advice you might have.

You are right; it doesn’t look like a burned hard drive. When a hard drive goes bad, you still should get some video on the screen. I think that you might have a failed memory module. Very often a failed memory module causes a laptop not to boot with symptoms like yours – power LED lights normally, DVD powers up, hard drive LED flashes a couple times, but that’s it. Nothing will appear on the screen and the backlight will not light. If you have 2 memory modules, try to remove them one at a time. If you have only one memory module, try to reseat it. Try to move the memory module into a different slot, because the memory might be good but the memory slot on the system board has failed.

I have a similar problem with a laptop I am working on.
its a compaq preario 2100 with a amd processor.
it powers up but no video on the screen. No video on external moniter. So I thought maybe its the processor. So I tried testing it in another motherboard on a destop pc. but I dont think that mobo supports a amd moble athlon 2400+ I can completely romeove the memory and it does the same thing the fan turns and the dvd drive trys to access. The hard drive turns as well. I have even tried powering up the system with nothing but the motherboard processor and memoroy installed still no memory. Do you think its the motherboard? I didnt see anywhere on the site where I can put a new post I just replyed. Any help would be appreacted greatly.

    Hey Kevin,
You didn’t mention if you tried to REPLACE the memory module. If you sure that the memory is good, then it looks like you have a bad motherboard. Yes, it could be a bad CPU, but from my experience (I’ve repaired hundreds laptops), a CPU itself doesn’t fail very often. So far I’ve seen only 5-6 failed CPUs and hundreds of failed motherboards. So, I guess that’s the motherboard problem.

BTW, I just fixed a failed Satellite 5105. :P The laptop didn’t start up, after I press the power button, the power LED flickered yellow. I took it apart completely and reseated all cards and all connectors. Now it’s boot fine and I’m ready to re-image the hard drive.

I have tried a athlon at 2200 in the laptop as well it did the same thing. I tried one stick of memory and it did the same thing no video. I dont currelty have any memory to test it with. I will try testing the memory if I can borrow some. If I test the memory and it dont work still do you think it almost certainly the motherboard?

    Kevin,
I work mostly with Toshiba laptops and just occasionally with Compaqs. I know that system board prices are way too expensive and very often it doesn’t make any sense to buy a new mobo, because you can buy a new laptop for the same price. If you cannot find a cheap motherboard on ebay, probably you will not be able to find it cheaper anywhere else.

    Laptop Freak Says:

    Sunshine,
First try this. Remove the battery and start the laptop from the AC adapter (without battery installed). Make sure that power LEDs light up when you plug the adapter.

I don’t think that putting in a USB stick would cause such a problem. In order to start any laptop with video, you need the motherboard (I assume the video card in integrated into the board), CPU and the memory module. If one of these parts fails, you will not get any video output. Probably you cannot test the motherboard and the CPU, but you can access the memory module. You can easily access the memory module from the bottom of the laptop as it shown on the step 3 of this disassembly guide. Overtime the memory contacts might get oxidized and reseating the module might help to start the laptop. Check the memory contacts; if the got oxidized you can clean them with an eraser. Try installing the memory into another slot if it’s not already taken. If you have 2 memory modules installed, remove them one at a time and test the laptop after each removed module.

Interestingly enough, I’ve got a Satellite M65 and have also recently begun having the same problem, though it is somewhat intermittent. It’ll boot and sometimes nothing will show. Sometimes I get the POST beeps (1 long beep and 2 short beeps). Sometimes it will boot but the keyboard and mouse don’t work, and finally sometimes it works just fine. I am going to see if I can’t find the memory in this and see if maybe something is loose. I don’t think it’s the mainboard if it does occasionally work. I’ll keep an eye here for more information.

    Amnesia Says:

My problem started out like this: the LCD bulb (by looking at the diagram, I assume the correct name would be CCFL back-light bulb, but is this the same for my Gateway Laptop?) went out and for a long time I’d used another monitor until I was able to get a new computer (this monitor however wasn’t flawless, perhaps because of having to boot with a laptop made it flicker? I would have to adjust its position to see a picture again). Recently, my mom took the laptop to see if she could get it fixed and the man there told us that the whole monitor needed to be replaced. When we brought it back home, we tried to hook it back up to the monitor, and it would work through the “Windows XP is loading” screen, but when it came to the part where I had to choose which account to log into, the monitor would blank out, as if it were inactive. I tried to fix the plugs of the monitor, but nothing. I even tried using a new monitor, and not even that worked. So I pulled out the laptop and saw a faint picture. Having hope, I plugged in the adapter and having closed the laptop to about a 90 degree angle, the light turned on! I had all the accessibilities and nothing was wrong (except for when i pushed it back, then the light would go off again). I thought later I would retrieve my files and then that would be it. I turned it off. Then I tried to turn it back on: no light, not even at 90, 60, 35 degrees, nothing. It’s been at least a day and now the monitor wont even turn on.

Do I really need to replace the whole monitor or just the bulb? And why won’t it start up?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

    Amnesia,

remove the memory of my laptop and upload it using another PC temporarily

I guess you are talking about your personal data on the harddrive? You can buy an external 2.5” USB enclosure (for laptop hard drives), remove the hard drive from the laptop and install it into the enclosure. After that you connect the enclosure to any other working PC via USB port. The hard drive should be detected automatically and after that you can transfer all needed data. You can find an external USB enclosure in any local computer store for $20-30.

Do I really need to replace the whole monitor or just the bulb?

There is no simple answer to this question. It might be just a loose cable connection, bad FL inverter board, stuck lid close switch or bad CCFL bulb. It’s impossible to say with on is causing the problem.
Try tapping on the lid close switch and see if you can get the backlight to turn on. If you can then probably you have a failed FL inverter board – the most common backlight related problem.

    Hi,

I have a 2 year old Satellite A60-JLI that seems to have given up the ghost. From looking at this site and others, it seems like the onboard RAM is failing. On startup, the Toshiba graphic is often distorted, and if I get past that (I’m running Linux), I either get errors during bootup of the os and the machine freezes, or (more rarely) I bootup fine and anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours of use causes it to freeze. I’ve read that if the onboard memory is gone that I have to replace the motherboard, but is it possible that buying another memory module can solve the problem? From the specs, my model can take up to a gig and a half of memory, and I was hoping that getting an extra gig might do the trick. Your help is greatly appreciated, and kudos on a great site!

  24. 24
    Laptop Freak Says:

    Danielle,
I think 3 beeps on startup might indicate memory failure. Try reseating memory modules. Looking at the laptop specifications you provided I assume you have two 1GB memory modules installed. Remove them one by one and test the laptop after each removed module. Test both memory modules in both memory slots.
If the laptop works fine with one memory module installed in both slots, but fails with another module installed in both slots, the second module is bad.

I have a Toshiba M35X-S111 .. I have already fixed the DC jack a few times, and thus I can’t get it covered under any warranty.

Similar symptoms: Power button goes on, fan goes on for 5-10 secs, then shuts down. Power LED and Power button stay illuminated forever. No power to the CDrom. AC adapter works fine, charges fine. Battery also is good. Current is good. No video output. Changed ram slots, even changed to a new ram module. HDD is good, I actually took it out and wiped it since I thought the laptop is done for.

Re-seated everything and no go. I recently read someone saying that there is another “chip” that most likely has come off the board and is causing this problem. So i went for a new memory module but it was the same thing the computer powers but nohing on screen…i tried 10 different memory modules from which 2 were EDO; with those EDO PC started fine but wont recognize them (because of memory type compatibility ofcourse) but the remaining 8 were the same memory type and nothing even with Kingston and Generic modules from the same memory type including 8,16 and 32 Mb ones…… is there a chance that mainboard has a failure? its curious because without memory in the slot PC works really fine no frezes or resets or any kind of problem…just that i’m only using 8 mb…so it seems that the main board “is working fine” right?

but im really confused because if it is ok, then why i can´t start with the 32mb module or any other module?

i hope someone could give me some clues…thanks a lot for your time.

I have a similar issue and am really at wits end. I have just purchased 3 used laptops non work. I work on desktops and couldn’t pass up the deal. All three are GATEWAY 450′s from 2003 loaded with Pentium M Centrino and 512 ram, HD’s are: 30gig, 40gig and 60gig They all do the same thing, Turn on and nothing happenes. Fans start up, sometimes the screen flickers to let you know there is power, and once in a while they load XP or sometimes try, I get an error message that gateway can’t determine. I tried a restore cd, tried to flash the bios, twice out of 300 times I have had winxp load, and the other times nothing. Then about 30 of 300 I have had the Gateway screen flash and thats it. I have interacted with bios about 10 times total. I am getting stressed. I have interchanged HD’s and Mem Mods, Decreased even removed, one time heard three beeps too. What could possibly be wrong. is it the display CRT I have had a picture a few times and then it went all haywire like from the movies HACKERS.

I agree with Brad. It’s very likely that you have a problem with the video card. But the same problem might happen because of failed memory module.
In order to start any laptop with video you need three main parts: motherboard (with video card), processor, memory. With these three parts you should be able to get video on internal or external screens. If there is no video check the memory module first, try reconnection it. If the laptop still has no video even after you install a known good memory stick, probably you have a problem with the video card. On most laptops the video card is integrated into the motherboard and if it’s bad you have to replace the whole motherboard.

I would probably check the memory first. How many RAM sticks you have installed? Try reseating the RAM module, move it from one slot to another. If you have two sticks, remove them one by one.
By the way, try this. Remove all RAM modules and turn the laptop on. Does it give you a beep error without memory modules installed? From my experience, a Satellite M35X laptop will give you a beep error if there are no memory modules installed. If it will not beep without RAM, there could be a problem with the motherboard.

For Tatiana and Other having boot problem with Toshibas like No Toshiba Logo, fan spins, HDD light on ( sometimes flicks 2 to 3 times ) CD / DVD drive spins, u can hear it spin, even u can hear clip clap like sound of hard drive trying to boot, etc etc but SCREEN REMAINS BLACK !! U tried switching RAM from one slot to other, tried connecting to external monitor, BUT NO LUCK. U tried 15 – 20 times by pressing power button and restart it again in hope it boot to windows. Before you come to conclusion that Motherboard is dead or dying and give up hopes, plz note, if ur fan spins, u see HDD lights, cd / dvd spins than ur Motherboard is not dead or dying. If motherboard dies u never get any gadgets to work on. I have Toshiba, I love it, hate loosing it or bring new one. Most likely your power supply is bad. Black box where u connect ur power cord one side to the wall and other side goes in ur laptop. These small black boxes get weak and do not supply enough power to ur laptop to boot. Try charging ur laptop battery once battery is charged take power cord out from ur laptop and try turning it on. If ur laptop boots up than its ur black power supply box is bad. Plz note, ur battery gets weak as soon as u boot ur computer from it. So next time u boot without charging it, it wont help to boot. Boot takes more power. Even if ur unable to boot with battery try connecting it with different power supply, before u spend any money. Test it first.

    Good morning,
I have a Toshiba M35X-S149 Laptop. When I turn it on the light for the power comes on. The fan starts to run and the boot process starts. anywhere between 5-20 seconds later the fan stops followed by loss of video. The power light stays on for about 5 – 10 seconds more. Tried switching ram slot, different ram, battery in and Ac power, battery only, AC only, resoldering the DC jack-all no joy! any thoughts?

    Hi There

I got similar problem with when the power is turned on Fans starts for few seconds but no video displayed. but when i pressed DVD, the tray opens up and close normally. nothing more. this happens Last April. I bought this Toshiba A100 Satellite laptop in Aug 2006 from Dicksmith , Auckland, NZ. I am out of country with my laptop and waiting to return to get repaired since I got 5 yrs extended warranty, Now today I just switched on and to see windows XP logo displayed and after few seconds it went off and dead again. Could you please kindly tell someone whether my laptop mother board is gone or something wrong with power supply? I am still waiting to return to NZ for repair but I like to know the real reason for this strange behavior.

    thanks

That could be memory related issue. Try reseating the memory module. If you have two modules installed, pull them out of the laptop one by one and test the laptop with each memory module separately. It’s possible that one of the modules is bad. If that’s the case, you can remove the bad module and run the laptop on the remaining good module.

    Hi,

I actually have the same exact problem as “Sunshine.” my Toshiba laptop m65 wont turn on. When i turn the computer on with the battery nothing will show, and the fan comes on for 8 seconds then turn off. But when I use the AC Adapter cord, THE FAN WONT EVEN TURN ON! Sunshine said that it was the motherboard, and not the memory, so do think it is possible to fix this problem myself? or should I take it in? Thank You for your time. I hope to get an answer back.

    Hi,
I have toshiba satelite m65. I can’t start it since I shut it down this morning and came to work. The blue light comes on, even fan starts, and after 8 seconds it simply goes off. Nothing appearing on the screen. Tried simple tings like removing the battery, but nothing.
The only cause I can think of is me putting in memory usb stick before I started it.
    please help, I’m desperate

    Thank You

Could be bad memory. Do you have two modules installed? Try removing memory modules one by one and test the laptop with each module separately. Try different combinations, test each modules in each slot.
If your laptop works fine with one module in both slots but will not start with another module in both slots, the second module is bad.
If reseating and moving memory modules will not help, most likely your problem is the motherboard. I think it’s very unlikely if both memory modules fail at the same time.

Man i have a Toshiba Satellite M115-S3094 yesterday i was using it, i was in the toshiba website, they said getting the latest BIOS drivers was good to avoid future problems with battery. I installed the drivers with the ac adapter plugged in and it finished well and it restarted fine and continued working, i used the computer for a lot of hours then i turned it off AND PUT IT ON ITS BAG (which i think it was the main error) and now when i turn it on the blue light goes on, the CPU fan starts, it kinda beep on the speakers (like a tat, tat, tat sound) AND THE DVD DRIVE DOESN’T OPEN. i tried reseat the memory and put it on the other slot but nothing happen. From what i have read here it seems it could be either the mother board or the Ram memory i hope is not the mobo, and i hope i can get some help, thanks in advance……

My toshiba satellite a100 started freeze a week ago. Usually it freezed after a couple of minutes after power on. And always after 2-3 minutes while playing videos. I ran all sort of antivirus and spybot, adaware etc. Everything seems to be ok. I thought it was a memory bank problem (it has 2 512 Mb banks), so I powered off and pull off 1 bank. The PC never booted again. I put the two banks again, but nothing. On power on, button light is on, small leds (AC and power switch) are on, cd driver seems to start, but nothing happens. Screen remains black. And that’s all. May anyone help me? Thank you. Armando.

I have a Compaq that is doing the same thing.. I just leave it sitting there, and sometimes the LCD will fire on after it sits there…I don’t even see a back light when its acting up. I assume that the inverter isn’t bad, because When I try the external Source, I still don’t get a picture.. Even if I totally reboot, and even with the FUNCTION Key, no Display. I checked the memory Modules, and It still had no affect on the display. I probably assume that its the on-board video chip. I hope not.. since that will require me to replace the mobo. Anything else I’m missing? Should I unplug all peripherals that are replaceable on the board itself?

    Procedures performed:
    Resetting the battery
Checking Memory one at a time..
External Monitor (both rebooting, and Function key)
Taking out Wifi Card (since it was bad to start with)
Took out the Hard Drive and restarted.

I had a similar problem with a Toshiba Satellite A300D-15B, I had just replaced the thermal unit (which is a heat sink for cpu and gpu and fan), put everything back together and rebooted.
The laptop just hanged, blank screen, on button back light on,
dvd-rw accessing you saw drive’s yellow light flash ever few seconds and so I read this after hunt for answer. I removed 2 memory modules of 2 gig each. Then inserted one in properly and switched on, the system rebooted prefect. The problem was the memory modules needed to be fitted properly. Thanks alot !!!!
