Power saver software on my Toshiba laptop does not show the Hibernate option at all (when the lid is shut) and so the battery drains really fast

I have a Toshiba Satellite A65 S-1068. Recently the Windows XP Home crashed and I have installed another version (Professional) having lost the original CD that came with the laptop. I am gradually downloading all the drivers etc. from the Toshiba site. My problem is with the Power Saver Software. The newly installed software does not show the Hibernate option at all (when the lid is shut) and so the battery drains really fast and the computer remains on even when the lid is shut. How to solve this issue? Please help!

I never use the hibernation option, so I decided to check if the power saver software on my Toshiba Satellite A105 has it. And I found that the hibernation option in not there by default. Here’s how I was able to enable it.
Open the control panel and click on the power options icon. It will bring you to the power options properties where you have to select the hibernation tab. In here enable the hibernation by selecting the box and click on OK to save the settings. Now, when the hibernation is enable in the Windows power options you can go to Toshiba power saver settings. There you should be able to select the hibernation mode, when the display is closed.

    Hi,

I had exactly the same problem with my Toshiba Tecra A3, i’ve installed Professional XP and the hibernation option doesn’t exist in either the Power Saver application or the control panel Power Options. So does anyone know of another 3rd party program or another fix to this problem short of uninstalling professional and installing the home edition.

    thanks

I HAD the same problem with my Toshiba Tecra. Reinstalled Win XP and no hibernation tab or standby. The solution was that I needed the Toshiba video driver. It seems the Win XP driver runs the vid but it’s not enought to enable the hibernation or standby. My breakthrough came when I read the MS knowledge base article ID 266169 and put it together with the fact that there is a powersaver option on the control panel display.

    Hope it helps!!!

My father just purchased a Thinkpad T60. As you all know when you plug in your laptop it gets brighter. Is there a way to keep its brightness as if it were pluged in without it actually being plugged in? The dimness of it when it’s not plugged in strains his eyes.

    Thanks

You have to have some kind of power management software (power options) installed on your ThinkPad, it would be either Windows or IBM (Lenovo :P ) utility. You should be able to find this utility in the control panel. Adjust display brightness in there. I believe by default the display brightness is set to be lower when the laptop runs from the battery.

On some notebooks (Dells for example) you can change the display brightness in the BIOS, not sure if it’s true for IBM notebooks.

    Marjorie,
Unplug the power adapter and remove the battery. Wait for two-three minutes then plug in the AC adapter and try turning it on again.
