Just to add some info that may help. I had to re-load XP on Toshiba equium lap top after an unfortunate virus infection (its now properly protected!!) but I could not get the hibernate function to work. it would not appear on the windows/control panel/power options tab and also it did not appear on the toshiba power saver feature in control panel. after much fiddling I found out that the reason was a missing display driver. I uploaded the driver from the Toshiba web site and everything worked. I have to say prior to that point I had uploaded and installed most of the drivers but for some reason I did not load the display driver and that proved to be the problem one !! gook luck.

Bryan Gillam,
You can try this. Unplug the power adapter and remove the battery. Wait for a couple of minutes, plug in the power adapter and try turning the laptop on.
