Our computer shuts down and you can’t log on to the internet or run any programs without shutting it off and turning it back on

We have a Toshiba Satellite Mobile Intel(R) Pentium (R) 4 CPU. When it sets for a while, and it can vary, the computer shuts down and you can’t log on to the internet or run any programs without shutting it off and turning it back on. What can be causing this? It has been driving us crazy. We should also tell you that we are not computer savvy, so before we take it some where to have it checked out we thought we would ask you.

From your description I cannot understand if your computer shuts down completely or it locks up after a while, so you cannot do anything. If your computer shuts down unexpectedly, then I would check if the heat sink is clogged and the CPU overheats. It’s a very common problem and usually doesn’t take a lot of time to repair.
On the other hand, if your computer locks up after a while, then I would test the hard drive first. I’ve seen it many times when a laptop stops responding because of a bad hard drive. If the hard drive fails the test, then it must be replaced. Hard drive replacement requires reloading the operating system, so be prepared for it. Do not forget to back up all important information from your computer when you take it to a repair shop.

If your laptop is Toshiba Satellite M35X, A70 or A75 then you might have a top cover that wasn’t grounded properly. You can fix the problem if you replace the top cover assembly or modify the old one.

    hey there,

thanx for the reply toi my other comment, appreciate it alot,

ok here is the thing, there is this New Dell D820 (duo core 1.83 GHZ – processor no. :T2400) laptop – and with a 1 GB Ram ( my friend also increased it to 1 GB adding 512 MB MOre) so now the problem is, whenever he connects to the Internet, like opening a page and trying to sign into his email the Computer FREEZES – everything in its place… you cant mov the mouse, you cant use Alt+ctrl+del nothing…so u’ll have to restart…and this happened like 20 times in one day after being connected to the internet – i even re-installed Windows XP Sp2 – scanned the drives for virsus and stuff….still same problem…

and oh yea – this Laptop – when you goto the Setup it shows the memory size as : 8 MB (Intel 94 GM ) – but in the System properties and the Direct X Diagnostics utility its shown as 224 MB ?? whats all this about ?

second problem, whenever i plug in a USB cable to the USB port or take it out the Blue Death screen appears giving a message : BAD_POOL_HEADER ???

can you please help me… i’ll be so grateful… thanx alot

    happy new year.

    Ajmal,

now the problem is, whenever he connects to the Internet, like opening a page and trying to sign into his email the Computer FREEZES

You reinstalled the operating system but the problem is still there, so I would assume it’s not a software issue. Make sure that the laptop has a latest BIOS installed. Check if there is a BIOS update available for downloads. Upgrade the BIOS and test the laptop again.

when you go to the Setup it shows the memory size as : 8 MB (Intel 94 GM ) – but in the System properties and the Direct X Diagnostics utility its shown as 224 MB ?

I believe this laptop has Intel’s 915PM/GM/GMS chipset. The graphics card is integrated into the system board and uses part of the main memory. The video memory is dynamically allocated and the size can change from 8MB to 224MB. When the video card is not loaded it uses default 8MB but as soon as you load the video card the amount of memory allocated for the video card increases and grows up to 224MB.

whenever I plug in a USB cable to the USB port or take it out the Blue Death screen appears

Again, check if there is a newer version of BIOS and upgrade it.

I have a Toshiba A45-S250 that freezes up regularly, but only when it is on battery power; no problems when using the AC adaptor. Is this a symptom of a bad battery, or maybe something else?

    Andy,
I doubt that this problem is somehow related to the battery. Make sure the laptop has the latest version of BIOS installed, update it if needed.

My Toshiba P35-S6292 has an issue with locking up after closing the lid, regardless of the power source (it doesn’t “freeze” because of the battery or something like that). Classically when I closed the lid, the power saver comes on (shuts the LCD off) and the computer disconnects from the internet. More and more often now when I open the lid back up, the display is not reset, when before a touch to the keypad or external mouse would bring up the display just as it was when the lid was closed, and after the network (modem, wireless router, etc.) re-established itself, the internet was accessible again (probably 20 seconds, maybe). What would cause the display to not come back on after the lid has been closed?

Also, the hinges are getting loose, and I know there is a category dedicated to that, but I couldn’t find any specific info on whether the hinges can be tightened and how to tighten them, but only a small bit where tightening hinges was alluded to. Any help would be AWESOME!!!

    tjayphe,
I’m not sure what is causing the first issue, but I think I can help with hinges. Tighten two screws shown on the step 10 in this guide, it might help.

    Laptop,

My Toshiba will not let me change the power settings. My desktop lets me set it so that the screen saver comes on in 20 minutes, but that the display will never shutdown, stand by or hibernate, so that I can download large files from the web at night.

My Laptop refuses to let me change any of these settings, except It says to change them I need to go into Toshiba Power Saver, and then do it there, but that still won’t give me an option. Can you help?

Just in case make sure the laptop has the latest BIOS version installed, updated the BIOS if needed.
To me that sounds like a hardware related problem. I just looked at the laptop service manual but it’s not clear if both volume control buttons are located on a separate board or on the motherboard. If both buttons are located on a separate board, it’s possible that this board is not working properly.
Did you try reimaging the hard drive back to factory defaults?
