My LCD screen has an issue. The image on the screen is garbled and flickers in some areas.

LCD Screen has a bad connection. The screen itself I know is fine, I can pull on the top left of the screen and everything looks like it’s supposed to. But, when I release the pressure the image becomes garbled and flickers in some areas. I’ve read that sometimes the actual video cable can get loose? If so, I can’t seem to figure out how to get at the inside of the PC to investigate. Do you have any kind of walkthrough or illustrations that might help for this issue?

I’ll run the specs.

1Ghz PIII processor, 256MB RAM Rage 3D Mobility
Windows XP Pro SP2

I don’t want to frustrate you, but I think that you might have an issue with the screen itself. Basing on my experience, when you can get a normal image by twisting the screen, then most likely the screen is bad and should be replaced. I do not exclude possibility of a loose connection, so reseating the cable would be a good attempt to fix the problem. Use Lenovo website to download a hardware maintenance manual for Thinkpad A22m. The LCD disassembly would be discussed on the page 99. You can also take a look at my disassembly guides I’ve created for Toshiba laptops. Find a guide about taking apart a laptop display assembly to get a better idea about LCD mask removal.

I have HP 500 Laptop which is about 15 months old. The problem with the LCD screen is that, if I open the screen at an angle more than 90degrees, it shows red color clouds & lines at some parts of the screen. If I open it at 90 degrees, it works perfectly fine. what can be the problem & what should I do. Pl suggest.

I ordered a set of hinges for $27 on ebay it’ll be here in a couple of days.

When I had the hinge cover and the bezel off I broke away the piece that was pressing against the screen with good results. As long as I move the screen slowly it hasn’t flickered at all. So I’m going to assume this is my problem

Today I took it apart nd found the right hing is broken, this seem to be the problem maybe….I’ll let you know once I replace it.

    Glenn54, Lucky Lynnie,

Sometimes the picture is fine but, at times the screen is garbled with vertical lines that are multicolor fading to gray. If I apply pressure to the back of the screen the lines would go away, now it’s very hard to make them go away.

That problem can be related to bad video cable, loose connection or bad LCD screen.

I will move the screen up and down until I find a good spot, I have to hold that spot untill I am done. When I let go the lines come back. I am in no way a pc tech person but, I think that I can make this repair myself. I hope that you are able to responed to this. I did find one other comment close to mine but only 1/3 of the screen had the concern.

okay my mother and sister both have Gateways MX6025 and i have a question for both. first my moms computer which i’m on now with it connected to an old gateway monitor, i have to hookit up to it to see the screen because on the actual laptop it is almost all white except it has a strip of black with a blue line in the middle of the screen. any ideas on how to get the screen back to working normal? Then my sisters comeputer will turn on for a second or two ten seonds at themost enough time for me to get into the Bios settings then it just shuts off. Gateway seems to think its battery problem but i have a good battery and it still does it.

My son was sitting at his desk doing his homework, slide the chair back and the arms of the chair jarred the desk causing the laptop to jump up and back down on the desk. Now, he said that behind the screen, it looks like the glass is shattered. We have a 1 yr warranty on the laptop just purchased in August and the company isn’t going to cover it. What can I do?

Refer to this link. Disregard the blurry picture. That’s my lack of photography skills. Instead, please tell me what’s making any LCD I connect to this laptop display images (including BIOS screen) 4 times. Despite the bad photography, the 4 images are perfect representations of the 1 image that is supposed to be seen on the display, i.e. no blurriness or dimness. External monitors show the 1 image perfectly.

My daughter’s T30 2366 dropped. Now when I boot, the screen flickers a second in an aurora borealis-sorta way, and goes dark. I’ve hooked up an external monitor and it’s fine, so I guess it’s hardware. I began disassembling the screen to see what trouble I could cause, check connections, loose plugs, etc. I booted it to see if any fiddling might affect the picture. Nada. Then I lowered the backlight setting all the way, and now the screen is full of colorful flickering things. The colors seem to change as I hold it differently or squeeze certain places and even if I lay it down face up. I’m afraid to think I need a new LCD, but is there any other possible cause?

I replaced my broken screen on my Gateway 7422GX but image quality is poor and there is a flickering line. The images are not smooth and boxy colored pixels show up. The flickering line is usually cyan and shows up along the task bar and in the title bar of applications. The poor images symptoms also reveal themselves in banners, images, and video on websites.

Initially I thought I just needed to adjust display settings and update drivers but the problem was still there. So I hooked my broken screen back up and the image was excellent other than the damage on the lower right. I exchange the screen for another thinking that I got a bad screen.

Now with this second screen installed, I am having similar problems to a lesser degree. There is still the flickering lines and images show blobs of color in highlights and shadows.

I have made sure the screen models were the same as the original, LTN154X1-L03. I connected my laptop to an external monitor and there were no image problems. Did I get another bad screen or can I fix it?

My Dell Latitude D610 recently started to have tiny white bars across the bottom third of the screen. When I applied pressure to different parts of the screen or twisted it a little, it would go away, but now I can’t get it to go away for very long, and it’s started to have thicker bars flickering up and down the bottom. This laptop is about 2 years old…am I going to have to buy a new screen/laptop, or is it easily fixable?

    Laptop Freak Says:

    Amir,
I think your laptop might have a loose connection between the video cable and the LCD screen. Try reconnecting the video cable on the back of the screen.

I have a similar problem with my Princeton vl1918. The monitor shuts off and restarts every couple seconds. I see several of these on eBay with the same problem. It seems likely to me that it is a manufacturing defect of some sort.
I don’t thinks it’s the inverter or bulb since it seems to be power cycling, but I have not opened it up and if any one knows for sure, I would appreciate the insight.

    Jesse Owens Says:

The vl1918 has a power supply issue most likely. I have 3 with the same problem. I just bought them on ebay. My guess is that the transistor that runs the power supply is failing. I just opened one up tonight and started toubleshooting it. If I get mine back up I’ll let you know what I did.

Well, after sleeping on it, I decided to hook my old, cracked LCD back up to at least rule out the new LCD as being bad. Guess what? Colors were back to normal (by colors screwed up I mean pixilated….badly). So, I’m guessing it’s the screen and not the video cable since the only thing wrong with the old screen when I hooked it back in were the three huge cracks in it….

Hello, I have a problem with my Presario V3000. Recently, when I am using the laptop and unplug it from a power source and use only battery power, the screen goes black and flickers. This only happens occasionaly, and when I plug it back in it works fine, unplug= flicker. And if I restart the computer it works fine on battery power. Any thoughts?

    Thanks

    Steve,
Make sure the video cable on the back of the LCD screen is seated properly, all the way down inside the connector. If this laptop has a discrete graphics card make sure it properly connected to the motherboard, it’s possible the graphics card was dislocated during the accident. Check the video cable connection on the graphics card. IBM ThinkPad HMMs might be helpful.
What do you mean by “the colors are all messed up”? Is it like you see red instead of green, black instead of white, etc…? If reseating the video cable (and graphics card) will not help probably you got a bad LCD screen.

    Hello,

I recently had a cracked LCD screen on my Thinkpad T20 as a result of an overhead bin on an airliner accident. I replaced the LCD with one that was new (still in the green static wrapper with the protective film on the screen), so I assume the LCD is still okay. But, when I boot up the laptop, the colors are all messed up. Connecting it to an external monitor shows normal color and display, so I’ve eliminated the video card or driver issues as the problem. Did I wind up with a bum LCD or is it another issue?

    Thanks,
    Steve

Hi. I have a Sony Vaio PCG-V505BL notebook and 1 cm of screen at the bottom is garbled and flickers for about one month now. Tonight it got bigger, covering the lower 1/3 of the screen (similar to Reuben’s problem on 10/22/06). I twisted the screen gently to make this big flicker go away, but the 1 cm at the bottom remains. The screen is perfectly good other than this. The flicker doesn’t go away with restarting (like Sohaib Mansoor on 10/30/06). Connection to an external LCD shows a normal screen. I’m not too computer savvy and will take it to a shop for repair I guess, but don’t want to get ripped off. Any advice? Is there something that I can easily check like the connections or is the LCD screen bad?
