Sound, wireless connection and modem on my Toshiba Tecra 9100 notebook failed an the same time

I needed some help on my Toshiba Tecra 9100 notebook. I have three issues that may be related:
1. Sound card is not detected by laptop
2. Wi-Fi card not detected by laptop
3. Modem is listed but not usable – laptop reports that it is used by another software
I have used the rescue CDs that came with the computer to restore the laptop to new condition and I even downloaded the latest drivers for audio from the Toshiba support website. The driver did not install.
I installed a BIOS update months before these problems happened. And these three problems happened at almost the same time
I opened the laptop following your procedure (thanks, by the way) to check for loose connections but everything seemed okay.
The computer still works but there is no sound, modem nor wi-fi. And I can still connect to the internet via LAN cable…but it really sucks that I can’t listen to music or use the modem for dial-up connections.
What could be the problem? Please help me.

All three modules – the sound board, the wireless card and the modem connect to the I/O board and I think that’s your problem. Apparently the I/O board is bad. You can see the I/O board pictured on the step 17.

I am a computer repair person for a small computer repair/upgrade company. I have found most toshiba and a few gateway laptops, when re-installing windows XP or replacing the hard drive, and not having the recovery disks, the sound, wireless and sometimes the modem drivers from the manufacturers web site will not install or recognise the hardware, even though the webs site states they are for that specific model. Its almost 100% on the toshibas and about 20% on some gateway models. I’m still trying to find out why. I have 3 laptops right now i am trying to install the drivers on and they will not install or recognise the hardware for the sound, wireless and modem. They worked before i wiped the hard drive. So i dont think its a hardware issue. I think we are all the victims of propriotary hardware/software made by certain manufacturers. This seems to be a real problem with these models. So far i have not found the answers, but when i do i will be sure to post them here or send them to Laptop Freak to post.

    Peace out

The sound is not muted, right? The volume wheel on the side of your laptop is turned on, right?
Did you test your laptop with headphones?

Call Toshiba. I think you can buy the recovery CD from them. It shouldn’t be very expensive, something like $40.

The I/O Board on the Tecra 9100 series has been a long known problem point of these laptops.

After suporting these laptops for several years for my company, Toshiba actually EXTENDED our warranty on them due to SO many I/O board failures.

Sometimes only the sound will fail, but most of the time I notice failed sound/wi-fi/modem. Replacing the I/O board remedies the situation, but it’s likely that it will fail again.

My Toshiba Tecra 9100 sound just stopped working. I have no problem with the wireless or modem functions. The sound card is not recognized in Windows XP.

How can I troubleshoot/fix this? Any Toshiba utilities available to see if the sound card is working from a hardware vs. OS perspective?

    Thanks

PS: If it is hardware, where do I purchase a replacement part?

NO SOUND? Here’s a solution: Get a pair of USB headset. I just tried a pair of Logitech USB headset and it works. It bypasses your internal soundcard and there is no need to install any sort of software to use the headset. Of course, if you have a really good set of speakers on your laptop, that could be a shame but at least, you can once again play your CDs or chat on the internet. I have had this NO SOUND problem on my Toshiba Tecra 9100 for almost 6 months. I’m just glad I finally have some sort of a solution to this problem. The headset cost about US$25 or UK£25…go figure…we’re paying twice as much in the UK!!

Whether or not I get this issues resolve I will never buy a toshiba product again. I have even tried to get a restore cd form them but they have not responded to my numerous request. Can someone please direct me to a way of getting a restore cd. Please!!!

    Gustavo,

I have a Toshiba Qosmio F15-AV201 which has just came back from a “System Board Enhancement” performed at Toshiba depot.

Did they send you a set of new recovery CDs? Did you try to reimage the drive using NEW CDs? If you did but still have the same issue, it’s possible there is something wrong with the motherboard. Send the laptop back to Toshiba (I hope it’s not too late).

    Hello,
I have a Toshiba Qosmio F15-AV201 which has just came back from a “System Board Enhancement” performed at Toshiba depot. The laptop now works fine, but when I turn it on it finds a “New Hardware” – “Network Adapter” and goes to Windows Update to search for drivers, but nothing is found.
Although my wireless switch is turned on, I see there is no Wireless adapter installed. I tried to install some drivers for the “NEtwork adapter” from Toshiba support center, original CDs, restore CDs, Intel website, with no success. The drivers are installed, but I still have a question mark on “Network Adapter” and the wireless connection is never listed on “Network Connections”. I tried to delete it and then a “Wireless adapter 220BG” is recognized, but always with the yellow question mark and the wireless always down. Could you please give me some advice? Do you think the wireless adapter was broken when the system board enhancement was done? I do not live in the US, so I will probably have to buy an external wi-fi adapter (PCMCIA or USB) if the internal one does not work… Thank you.

I have a T9000 that possibly needs a new I/O board – no sound/wireless. Have just done a fresh XP SP2 install, latest drivers from toshiba website, but no good.

    Flavio Schmidt,
Try calling Toshiba customer support line and ask if you can purchase another copy of recovery DVD from them, it shouldn’t be very expensive. Search through the Toshiba website again, they have to have all device drivers available for download.

    Hi All,
I have a Toshiba Tecra 9100 that even after re-install of WinXP the audio board is not detected and I get “Driver was not installed” when trying to install the driver, the wireless card is detected but does not pick up any access points unless I block out pin 13 on the card and the TEAC DW-224E DVD\CDRW drive reads CD’s but not DVD’s (could be the DVD laser?). AS far as the audio and wireless issue, is this a sign of problems on the IO board? If so, anyone know what to look for as far as bad components or solder connections to test\look for? If I need a IO-board where are some places to get this? ebay? Thanks!

  26. 35
    Joe Rockhead Says:

tcr0312 says to remove mainboard & remove(cut off) the 2 plastic pins that are used to line-up maimboard to the screw holes. Then with foward pressure on mainboard lock the screws down to keep mainboard in its forwardmost position.(toshiba reccomends three floating screws) I would be happy to pass tech bulletin along.
ps I no longer get io/chk error! but still have no sound.
    Good Luck,
    Joe R

Thank you Laptop Freak, that little information about what Toshiba recomends is very helpful for me.
And I´m sorry, you´re totally right, i replaced the lower “CPU”Board and not the IO-Board. (I bought all 4 Boards last year and the IO-Board was defective, so I sent it back).
I will try to get a “good” IO-Board. after that i will test the other boards and if s.o. needs a Soundboard, Biosboard and BiosBattery, I would sell them to help others. so check back again .
    greets A

    Laptop Freak Says:

    Alex S,
If you have an issue with the sound on Tecra 9000/9100 notebooks, Toshiba recommends replacing the I/O board. But, it’s not the bottom board with the CPU socket on it. It’s the top board (larger one) with the wireless card slot. From my experience, replacing the sound board doesn’t help in this case.

    Alex.S. Says:

    Hi there,
I Have a Tecra 9000 with nearly similar symptoms as described in the topic.
At the beginning I had that “Freezings” while in Batterymode some time after win has finished booting to desktop and then only a hard-off via pwr-button for 3 secs. is possible. I managed that errors with a workaround:
Connect the Laptop to AC-Adapter, without Battery. Go to Bios (ESC and then F1 while Toshiba Logo) and set “cpu frequency” to “always high”. Then Try to uninstall the Toshiba Power Manager and Intel Speed Step! on windows and use the standard Windows Powermanagement. To Save battery you should set Frequency to always low before switching to battery mode! For me that worked much better, til I got that stupid IO errors (Blackscreen).
So I decided to get a new IO-Mainboard (the lower one with CPU-Slot). That resolved the error completely.
    —-
but not enough after a while:
the Soundcard stopped workin, and dissapeared in devicemanager. The IRdA and Modem are listet in device manager but no chance to geht them working. Same with miniPCI WLan card , listet, and installed, but no connection when enabeling the wlan-switch in front. And no LED is turning on.
I tried to solve that by replacing the Sound-Board and both flat cables to the boards, but with no effect.
For now, i don´t know how things can be working again.

    PLEASE!
is there somone with more Information about that errors, please make a post.
What about that repair bulletin tcr0312 ??? more Information please.

I love my Tecra 9000 and won´t give it up (dealing with problems for over 1 year now…)

    greets Alex.

I had problem w/Tecra 9100, with a Agere Systems MPC13A-20/R mini-pci wireless card; the switch on the front of the system does not work, yet the wireless client comes up in Win2K, but would not connect to my access point.

Solution: disabled pin 13 on the mini-pci card w/small strip of cellophane tape.
