The battery in my laptop starts charging normally. Then after a few seconds the LED turns off and the battery stops charging.

I have a problem with a Toshiba laptop model M55-S325. When I plug the power cord while the laptop is turned on it starts to charge and the AC power LED turns on as well as the charging LED. Then after a few seconds the charging LED turns off and the battery stops charging but the AC power LED stills on. If I unplug the power cord and plug it again it happens again.
I also noticed that this happens only while I’m in Windows. If I charge my laptop turned off it charges normal. Also during the boot and loading of Windows the charging is normal. I checked the power jack and I don’t thing the problem is there. I move the power cord while connected to check for failures in both the jack and the cable and in both cases the laptop turn off and on but nothing happened, everything is the same. What do you think the problem might be? Please help.

Can the laptop run just on the battery power, when the AC adapter is unplugged?
The problem with your laptops is very similar to a battery charging problem with some Toshiba Satellite A105 laptops. Almost the same symptoms. In case of Satellite A105 the problem could be resolved by upgrading the BIOS version. I think it might work for your laptop too. Go to Toshiba tech support website and download the latest BIOS for your model. It looks like at this moment the latest version is v2.10
You mentioned that the charging problem occurs only in Windows. I think it might be somehow related to Toshiba Power Saver software. Try to reinstall the power saver.
If upgrading the BIOS version and reinstalling the power saver software will not help, you might have a hardware problem. In Satellite M55 the battery connects directly to the system board. So, it might be either the battery failure or the system board failure. The best way to test it is finding a spare battery and test the laptop with the new battery installed.

Yes the laptop works normaly when the AC adapter is unplugged and I downloaded both, the BIOS update and the Power Saver software and the problem stills there but now there’s a variation after a few times of trying to charge the battery it does charges so I don’t know what else I can do… Maybe I’ll try to borrow another battery to check if there’s a problem there

You know what? I have one more idea. That’s would be nice if you can find a second AC adapter, just for test. I think that you adapter might be defective and it doesn’t provide enough power to charge up the battery while the laptop is running. But it provides enough power for charging the battery while the laptop is off.

    I have a Compaq nx9110 laptop.

The first symptom was that the laptop would occasionally not charge. This could be fixed by removing and reinsterting the AC adaptor.
The problem escalated to the point where I would have to unplug the AC adapter, remove and reinsert the battery and then reinsert the AC adaptor.

Now, when I plug in the AC adapter, the charging light stays lit for approx 2-3 seconds, the dissappears. Not enough charge is present to turn the laptop on. The laptop will not power with or without the AC adapter.

After cracking the laptop open, reconnecting all essential parts on the kitchen table, and inserting the AC adapter, the light again lit for approx 2 seconds, after which I noticed a ticking sound. This seems to be centered somewhere near a voltage regulator in the charging circuit.

I have some electrical knowledge, but not enough to test the whole charging circuit from start to finish, I was wondering if you could point me to where I should start looking. The DC Jack on the back is seated fine, and conducts electricity quite well, I can see no obviously damaged components, and from limited testing experience, I can find no short circuits.

    Cheers,

    Hayden Katz

    Sorry Hayden,
I cannot help you with component level repair. It sounds like you have a problem on the system board.
BTW, just make sure that AC adapter outputs normal voltage.

Now, when I plug in the AC adapter, the charging light stays lit for approx 2-3 seconds, then disappears. Not enough charge is present to turn the laptop on. The laptop will not power with or without the AC adapter.

May be the battery has no charge and the adapter is bad? It’s just a guess.

    Hello,

I have a laptop that is relativly old, its a Triathalon model GN586. The battery seems to take an age to charge, but stops at 50%. It wont go past. This only started a few months ago. Ive tried another AC adaptor and that hasnt changed things. Ive checked for loose connections and everything seems fine. I can’t explain why it stops at 50% or takes an age to charge.

    Andy ideas?

    Thanks in advance.

    Laptop Freak Says:

    Andy,
There could be a problem with the battery charge circuit on the system board, but most likely you just have a bad battery.
When a laptop battery is bad, it might take a long time to charge it up but as soon as you unplug the adapter, the battery discharges very quick, in some cases almost momentarily. Does it sound similar to your issue?
Unfortunately I cannot say witch one is causing the problem, the system board or the battery. The only way to test it is replacing the battery.

    Hi again,

Im gussing its the system board then since the battery lasts about half an hour with 50% charge. Since the laptop is so old a replacement battery isnt possible, and afterall, I did get this laptop for free anyway. It runs fine from the mains but a working battery would have been good too.

    Thanks for your help.

I was wondering if someone can guide me in doing this minor change myself?
    Much THANKS in advance

    Rick,
It’s not a minor change. The RTC (CMOS) battery is located on the system board and it’s necessary to open the laptop case in order to replace the battery. I would recommend to send the laptop in.

Greetings! I have a Toshiba Sat MX35-S114, and I need to get at the CMOS battery onboard the MB, to disable the Bios Setup password, like on regular desktop machines. Can you tell me where on the MB it is located, and can it be temp removed??? Have tried everything else, including upgrading Bios, to no avail. Customer has no clue what the password is … So, I figure this is the only way, short of sending it in, which is definitely not an option. Thanks, in advance. Blessings! Chris

    Laptop Freak Says:

    Chris,
Here’s a disassembly guide for Toshiba Satellite M35X notebook (www.irisvista.com), it’ll help you to get to the system board. I cannot show you a location, but I know the CMOS battery is located on the motherboard and can be easily removed (after you remove the motherboard from the notebook). Take a look at the step 19, I believe the battery is located on the opposite side.
I’m not sure if removing the BIOS battery will help you to erase the BIOS password. I’ve never cleared the BIOS password on Satellite M35X before.

But, I’m more experienced in regular desktop type machines. Ultimately. we don’t
have much to lose and everything to gain. In the end, may have to send it off to Toshiba
anyway. It’s out of warranty, so … it’s worth a try. I’ll drop you a note if successful!

    HI everyone

i have a problem with my sony PCG-TR3AP. This laptop fell and broke a small plastic on the right-front side near the USB port but no damage to the board.
I dont know if this issue is related since when i got this laptop it has the following issue:
when plugged into power, the battery shows that its charging. I leave it turned on overnight and turn it on in the morning, it goes fine for couple of seconds, then the Power and battery light on the front start blinking (maybe noting the battery is dying). then shuts down after certain time.
The main thing is that, if i remove the battery, the laptop doesnt turn on whatsoever…. the battery has to be there to turn on, otherwise there is no life.
I was told it might be the power regulator or power adapter…i tried another sony adapter… and no luck.

anyone can help with info on the power regulator? or some other component?”

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. – Tim

    Laptop Freak Says:

    Tim,
Looks like you have a problem with the motherboard. The AC adapter and the battery plugs directly into the motherboard. You replaced the battery and tested the laptop with another AC adapter, so it must be a faulty motherboard. Check if there is an update for the BIOS. Try re-flashing the BIOS. You should find instructions for the BIOS update on the Dell website.

I have a Compaq 1210US and I bought a new battery. Actually I bought 2 1 for me and 1 for a friend with a similar laptop but not the exact same model. However both of our laptops used the same model battery. My friend put his in and his worked fine, but of course mine did not. The charging light will blink 4 to 5 times then go solid and begin charging, after the percent charged changes on windows the light will flash and quit charging. I have tried everything I can think of. This happens with the laptop on or off, I swapped batteries and power supplies (in separate stages and together.. I have tested every possibility). Everything works fine on his but not on mine. I have upgraded the bios, and I just bought a charging circuit and ripped apart my laptop and installed it, and still the same problem. The only thing I can’t be sure of is the circuit I just bought b/c it was from e-bay. Please help the only way I can charge my laptop is to plug it in and unplug it, wait for the AC light to turn off plug it in let it charge until the light starts flashing, and repeat the process 60 more times…. any ideas???

    Laptop Freak Says:

    Jay,
Check if the power jack (the part where you plug the AC adapter) is properly connected to the motherboard. On some models (not sure about Compaq 1210US) the power jack might get loose overtime, the solder between the power jack legs and the motherboard cracks and you might get all kind of problems with power, including the battery charge issues. Here’s my post about power jack related problems. If that’s the case, you’ll have to resolder the jack.
Plug it the AC adapter and wiggle the power plug and look at the LED lights. Do they flicker when you move the power plug? Does the battery start/stop charging then you wiggle the adapter plug?

  20. 20
    Jay Says:

I am fairly shure it’s not the power jack. no lights go off when I wiggle it. It’s something dirrectly related to when the charger rises 1-3% I can hear a relay of some sort click and then the charge light just flashes. When I turn it on and watch the meter in windows it hapens exactly when it chages %. grrrrr

Yes, it should work just fine. The laptop also should work from the AC adapter even if you remove the battery.
I would try removing the battery and start the laptop just from the AC adapter. Also, find a multimeter and test if the adapter gives you any voltage. May be the adapter is bad.

Laptop switching to battery power while turned on with AC adaptor.

    Model: Toshiba Satellite A70-TS100E

    Hi,
I was wondering if you could help me in identifying the cause of this problem:
While turned on, the laptop will switch to battery power even if connected with the AC adaptor (sometimes during boot-up, or after a while) until the battery drains out, he then goes to hibernation. (the battery light is off)
If no battery in the laptop, it will shut down, and the AC light will blink very fast.
The battery (li-ion) will only charge up to 10%, where it then jumps right up to 100%,
And will discharge from 100% to 90% then jump to 0%,

I’ve published this comment and possible soution here:  Laptop switching to battery power while turned on with AC adaptor

Hey. I think I have a similar problem with my laptop. Here’s all my information:

I’m using an eMachines M6811 which has worked fine for me for about fifteen months. I started having some problems with an AC adapter at one point, which I fixed myself with some solder. Worked fine for a number of months afterward. Eventually it got goofy again, and bi-daily soldering jobs were getting tiresome, so I got a new adapter. This thing worked for about two weeks before the end was cut cleanly from the rest of the cable, as if it had overheated to the point where it just melted off. I got yet another, and now I’m finding weird patterns of charging/discharging. First off, whenever my adapter is connected, my computer does indeed know it’s there. All the LED lights are on, and the charge meter on my computer says that the battery is charging. However, I am in fact LOSING power. I checked, and the output on my adapter is compatible with this machine in both voltage and amperage. My laptop is dying as I type this. Does this sound like a battery issue, a mainboard issue or an adapter issue?

  27. 27
    Spiff Says:

Come to think of it, I didn’t mention this. The laptop DOES power. Mostly after having just died and reset as a result of running out of power. It can run without the battery, but it dies sometimes out of the blue.

    Laptop Freak Says:

    Spiff,

All the LED lights are on, and the charge meter on my computer says that the battery is charging.

Check if the LED lights flicker when you move or wiggle the power plug. May be you have a loose power jack?
Remove the battery and start the laptop from the AC adapter. Will it die if you move the power plug or it just dies by itself without any pattern?

My battery won’t charge even though the computer says it is charging.

I have a Compaq Presario 2100, and it has always charged and the battery had always run well. I recently came into posession of a new laptop, so I had been using that laptop for about 5 months. My new laptop had a trojan, I couldn’t clean up my firewall because the trojan messed it up so much, I went to play around in the registry, and now the computer won’t go to windows anymore…whoops…

So I went back to my old laptop. It was completely dead as I thought it would be, but when I plugged it in to the AC adaptor it would fire up immediately. The battery charging icon is up, and it says 0% remaining (charging). The battery charging light is on. The only problem is the battery never charges. I will leave it on all day to come back and find that it is still at 0% remaining, and if I turn the computer off and attempt to turn it back on without the AC plug in, the computer doesn’t even try to turn on.

At this same time I have also noticed my clock is losing time drastically. I’m talking 1 minute for every ten minutes of real time. I went to work for five hours and came back to find my laptop was behind by two hours. I thought they might be related.

I tried to use the Windows XP battery optimizer but it never went anywhere. I left it on for a good 7 hours and it never moved past 0% completion. The only other weird thing is the battery charging light will turn off for a second at about ten to twenty minute intervals.

That is all the relevant information I can think of, so if you could please help me that would be great. Thank you in advance.

    Laptop Freak Says:

    Alex,
Did you try reseating the battery? It’s possible that contacts oxidized and the battery will not make a good connection with the system board. Otherwise, it sounds like you have a dead battery and have to replace it.
There is another small battery inside the laptop – RTC (CMOS) battery. This battery is responsible for keeping the BIOS settings and time when the laptop is unplugged. You didn’t use this laptop for 5 months and the battery got completely discharged. You said that you loosing time. Does it happen when the laptop is unplugged from the wall or you loosing time even when the laptop is plugged? Keep the laptop plugged for 2-3 days and after that check if you still loosing time. It’s possible that you’ll have to replace the RTC (real time clock) battery too.

I can monitor its’ voltage and it goes btween 8.5 & 7.7 volts (2 different digital meters) depending on charge. I have pulled both of these batteries one at a time and left for 12 hours and the clock did not lose time. Could there be a third battery? Does the clock run on eiter the 14.8 or the 6.2 and lose time when both are discharged ? It’s got me a little puzelled.

There is one more battery – RTC (real time clock) battery also known as CMOS battery. The clock provides a time-of-day clock and a multi-century calendar with alarm features. Thanks for your quick response.

I have gone in under the keyboard and removed a couple of boards but as yet
can’t see a CMOS battery. The next step looks like a big one, a lot of
    disassembly to do.

Unfortunately the Serial # on the laptop is unreadable thus I don’t seem to be
able to get anywhere with Gateway. I have spent a bit of time at the Gateway
site trying to lern something and have found their site can be very
misleading. The results of a search can lead to a page that may not be what
one expects and the pages have little or no identification on them so it is
difficult to tell what type of system they apply to.

Hi thank you very much for your reply. actually speaking i never had any problem with my old battery. My laptop is quite old now (almost 3 years) so the battery was quite down. I was not able to run my laptop with out AC supply. So I felt it is important for me to buy a battery. Also, since couple of weeks I had serious problems in switching on my laptop. After the days work,I turn off my laptop. The next day when I want to switch it on, it doesnt switch on so easily. I keep pressing the power button but nothing happens even with the AC supply on. I dont not see the LEDs as well..Then I was simply simulating for the position at the connection point of the power to the laptop (AC adopter cord) and with another finger ont he power button and keep pressing it.. it takes atleast 10 minutes to switch on the computer.. I just could not figure out the problem. It is same everytime I turn off my PC so for the past few days i was not switching it off but only logging off!! So i felt it is because of the battery and i bought a new battery but again the same problem. ALso when there is some kind of force on the table where my laptop is placed, immediately some kind of strange screen appears (completely white screen) and it is difficult to switch off when that screen appears. Then I had to remove the power supply and play around for starting my PC as described above. I think this screen is because of the losse connections somewhere inside!

I apologize for the very lenghty description. but i wanted to put it in simple words and make it more comprehensive! please provide me a solution. what do you think is the problem? is it witht he AC adopter? do I need to check if the power is supplied to the batetry properly. I presume that the battery is not able to get the desired power to charge up! what do you think? Thanks in advance.. regards Vinay

    Laptop Freak Says:

    Vinay,
It’s hard to say exactly what’s going on with your laptop, I think you might have multiple issues.

I keep pressing the power button but nothing happens even with the AC supply on. I do not see the LEDs as well

It sounds like there is a problem with the AC adapter or the motherboard. Find a multimeter and test the voltage coming from the AC adapter plug. Check if the voltage is the same as it labeled on the adapter. Make sure the power will not cut off when you move the adapter cord, it’s possible that you have a loose wire inside the adapter power cord. If the power cuts off, replace the adapter.

Then I was simply simulating for the position at the connection point of the power to the laptop (AC adopter cord) and with another finger on the power button and keep pressing it.

If I understand right, you have to wiggle the power plug on the back of the laptop in order to start the laptop, right? It sounds like you might have a bad power jack inside the laptop or bad adapter cord (loose wire as I mentioned before). Make sure to test the adapter and see if the power cuts off when you move the cord.

Also when there is some kind of force on the table where my laptop is placed, immediately some kind of strange screen appears (completely white screen)

Start the laptop with an external monitor attaches and check the external video. Will it go white if you shake/move/hit the laptop? I know that on some Toshiba laptops the screen can go completely white when the connection between the video cable and the LCD screen is loose. This problem could be fixed by reseating the cable. Not sure about IBM laptops. Before you open the laptop, test the external video output.

Try reseating the battery if you haven’t done it yet, just remove it from the laptop and put it back. Make sure the contacts on the battery are clean. Try this. Remove the battery from the laptop, unplug the AC adapter and after that press and hold down the power button for about 30 seconds. Put the battery back into the laptop and test again. One more crazy idea. Remove the battery, start the laptop from the AC power and while the laptop is on, put the battery back into the laptop.

Re: Gateway Solo 9100 – CMOS Battery

I have found the 3rd battery on the underside of the mothrboard. It is a coin cell marked Panasonic ??AN UL 1220. It measures 2 volts. It is soldered to the motherboard via tabs which are spot welded to it.

    I can’t find any references to a UL 1220 just a CR 1220.

I suppose the best method of replacement is to cut the tabs and solder the new battery to the cut off tabs ???

    Hey,

I have a Toshiba Satellite A60 and have troubles with the battery. Some time ago I discharged the battery completely and the laptop fell out. When I plugged in the AC cord the charging led flashes amber one time and then does nothing anymore. The AC led is still on. When I unplug the powercord and then reconnect, it’s the same result. By accident, I discoverd when I cut off the 4th pin from the left (when you can read the text on the battery) it charges again. I first have to shut down or hibernate the laptop, then remove the battery, remover the ac power, cut off that pin, reinstall the battery and than instert the AC-power. However, with that method, the pc doesn’t know how much power is left in the battery. The charging last for houres and when the charging led goes out the battery isn’t fully charged. (the first times I did this it was completely charged but not anymore). When the charging led goes out I reconnect al the pins of the battery and I can see how much power I have left. Now it charges till 70 % but after a few minutes working on battery power its already 0%. After it went to 0 I can still work on the battery for about 20-30 minutes.
Is the battery broke or is there another problem?

    Thx

I have an ASUS M6Ne laptop running Windows XP SP2.

Recently two odd behaviors appeared simultaneously.

    1. Normally, when the AC adapter is plugged-in to recharge the battery, the battery led (on the front panel of the laptop) goes on. But now, when the battery is charging, this led remains off (but the battery can be fully charged without problem).

    2. Sometimes (not always) when the laptop is in use (with or without opened programs and with or without the AC adapter plugged-in) the power management icon in the system tray (indicating if the laptop is using the AC or DC power) starts to toggle automatically (by itself) between AC and DC power.

Maybe those two behaviors are related. But what could cause them? No software or hardware installation or uninstallation have taken place recently.

    Thanks,

(System on) It starts charging and then after about 5 minutes the charge light blinks and then the laptop turns off.

I have removed the battery and cleaned all connections but when I check the power options the battery is not charging.

Could this mean a faulty battery or could there be a fault with the laptop.

It’s impossible to narrow down the problem until you test this laptop with a known good battery. It’s possible the battery is dead or the battery charging circuit on the system board is bad.

Try this. Make sure the battery is not fully charged. Turn off the laptop and plug the AC adapter. The battery LED is still off? If yes, then it’s not software related problem. Probably something is wrong with the system board.
You can try upgrading/reflashing the BIOS.

I had the same problem with my toshiba p-15 series laptop. After months of working the problem, I stumbled on the solution. It seems the a-c adaptors I was using, despite claims to the contrary, were not exactly the same as the original one supplied by Toshiba. The Barrel plug on the Toshiba’s ends in a black ring on the tip. The inside contact for the inner pin is in no way exposed to the exterior “front” of the plug. The Various aftermarket units I owned, all had the black ring, but the inner pin recepticle is tappered in the front. Aparantly if the cord is turned just right, it would cause a short, and the battery charging cirut protector would kick in, turning off the battery charging, until you reboot.

However, from this morning, problems came: while using AC adapter alone or battery alone, laptop works. However while using them together, laptop LED lights blinks and the power metre for battery drops down immediately to 0% critical level, whereas the battery LED indicator says it’s full. Laptop Freak

I have a charging problem on a Thinkpad R40 (with latest embed. controller and bios from lenovo, all the latest system drivers, win xp pro sp2) and have gotten some very specific behaviors from troubleshooting….

The battery will start charging from a discharged state (say 28%) if I just plug in the ac adapter. I am keeping the Battery Information screen up with status page – displays “Battery – Charging” current = 2.20A /voltage = raises as it charges/ wattage = 35.64W.

However, if I do anything else like click on start – control panel or basically use anything the charging bars all go dead and the status says “Battery – No Activity”. I can get charging going by unplugging and re plugging the adapter in – a couple secs and it pops back to charging with good indications on the Battery Information window. If there is any activity at all, it seems, (like going to a web page or opening an app.) I actually hear a hiss sound, from the battery or very near it under the computer and then 1-2 secs and the Battery Information window goes “Battery – No Activity” with the 3 meters dead. From there I can plug and unplug and reset until the next action. (The AC adapter or plug is not intermittent, I have wiggled and tested those thouroughly).

    Another Symptom —
The problem goes away when the battery gets up to or greater than 80% or so.

At that point it charges normally and doesn’t go into “Battery – No Activity” on the Battery Information window. I also do not hear the hissing souds that is attached to activity like described above (also, I don’t hear that sound when the charging has shut down and the info window reads “Battery – No Activity”)

The problem seems load related – when at a lower % charge indicated , any load on battery while charging stops charging. At a higher % charge state (80%+) it seems the loads do not change or stop the charging. Battery problem??? Software? or Other hardware?

I have a reconditions IBM battery coming to see if that behaves differently. I would love to get your input, experience, or speculation however.

    Thanks!!

Battery came yesterday with partial charge, myPavilion N5470 said it was at 20%. I used laptop to run it down and then turned off laptop and charged it. It only charged up to 62% after a couple hours, and wouldn’t charge any higher. I unplugged charger and used laptop on battery for about 1-1/2 hours on wireless internet. When it ran down to 6% I plugged it back in, shut down laptop and left it charging overnight. This morning it was only at 62% again.

My charger is generic replacement for my N5470, but it puts out proper 19v 3.16a, and charged original battery to 100% just fine. The laptop says it requires 19v 3.16-3.30a.

    1. Test the laptop with a new battery

Hi there. I think my problem is somewhat similar to these, so here goes.

Laptop is eMachines M5312. Battery has always charged normally and I use the AC adapter every time I use the laptop, so the only time it is running off of batteries is when I’m moving it from one room to another or have closed it and it’s in sleep mode. Last week, I was asked about the battery by one of my students, so I disconnected it to show it to him, then reconnected it. Since then, Power Meter has been showing the battery at 0% and the charge light is constantly flashing. I disconnected the AC power to see if the battery was indeed at 0% and it ran for about 20 minutes before finally shutting off. I downloaded a utility called BatteryMon to see if I could get a sense of what was going on, and ran it after a complete shutdown and restart. The battery charged for about 10 minutes, though very slowly. It stopped at a capacity of 3774/969918 mWh and the charge light started flashing again.

Did I damage the battery somehow just by disconnecting and reconnecting it? The laptop was running at the time, so I’ve considered this possibility. From a bit of what I’ve read, it may be a problem with ACPI which is simply reporting incorrectly. That is, the battery is in fact charging, but Windows is not receiving that information properly, nor will any program I run because they rely on ACPI data also.

I really cannot believe my battery is bad all of a sudden, unless my actions caused it. Any advice you could offer would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

    Hi!
I have quite a nasty problem, and I need urgent help!
I have a DELL LATITUDE CPi A366XT. I have bought it with a dead battery. (If I had plugged it in AC, the charger led lit for 30secs than faded out). I sold the battery for a guy who renews them.
Lately I’ve found a used battery on the web titled “ok” with the same part nr. and bought it. When the stuff arrived to me I saw that it wasn’t the one that was photographed. I checked it at dell andfound that it is suitable for my laptop, but it didn’t power on. First I thought it was only depleted. I’ve plugged into AC, the charger led lit for almost an hour but, (small relief)than stopped but the machine didn’t power on from the battery afterwards, and the tester on the side of the battery didn’t lit either.
The guy appologised, and sent me another one, this time with the correct part number. The case by this is when I plug it into ac, the charger led lights green, than after 20 secs it blinks 3 times orange than once green, and this in a loop. I don’t know what to do..
I have bios version A10, and the latest is A15 -can a bios flash bring such help? (I’m terribly afraid that something goes wrong, and that the laptop won’t work at all after that)
Any Ideas? I need to do something fast, because the seller expects answers.

  75. 75
    Deluxx Says:

    It is me again, sorry..
In the last half an hour I decided to flash the bios to A15, and see what it brings. Everything went ok, but the symptoms are still the same with the two batteries. after reading a few comments I have also tried to charge both ones while the machine on, the one is blinking still, the other is charging without any results. According to dell rapid orange (amber)blinking means “battery may be defective” -but than what the heck is the green blink on the end?
Is there anything like a battery redetection by dell? because the guy told me before he sent me the 2nd battery that by IBM laptops some battery manager program must be run, according to “redetect the battery” ’cause without this the laptop will think that it is still the dead one and won’t budge.
I am totally out of ideas what else I could try, please help me!

I read some threads above that pointed to anything from a bad motherboard, voltage regulator power supply or battery problem. Long story short, I bought the proper ac adaptor for it, 19v 6.3amps and voila, problem fixed. It now charges in windows. So if anyone has the same problem, that is how you fix it. The output voltage must be exactly the same as it written on the laptop but the amperage could be the same or higher.

    Hi,

I have an HP Pavilion zv6500 and I’ve had it for about 2 years. I recently changed the battery, but after having plugged it onto what can only be deemed a faulty extension wire/plug, the battery doesn’t charge anymore.

The first time this happened, my battery was at 0%…I’d used it till the end, basically. When I plugged in the AC power to the laptop, the system tray icon showed the lightning bolt with the ‘charging’ text, and then switched to ‘on AC power’.

Now, when I plug in the AC power to the laptop, a light flashes briefly and then shuts off. Incidentally, when I do this with the laptop turned on, the icon in the system tray flashes a ‘charging’ for two seconds and then switches to ‘on AC power’ as mentioned above.

My question is: is it the battery, that I just replaced? Is it the circuitry which has suddenly fallen ill after the faulty plug I plugged it into? (Of course, I didn’t know it was faulty at the time) Or is it the AC adapter that can’t seem to provide power to both the battery and the laptop. Is it the motherboard? What is it?! I’m at my wit’s end, here. Any illumination on this would be a big help…

Hey, I have a Toshiba Satellite L45-S2416 that will not turn on. It is my father’s machine– apparently it was left unplugged and turned on this afternoon on battery power and I assume the battery completely discharged. It will not turn on now w/ battery in and w/ AC adapter in or with the battery out/ AC adapter in (as was suggested on another board). The battery flashed a solid amber indicator light at first (manual says this means the battery is charging) and then switched to a solid green light (battery is charged). Machine still won’t turn on. There is no noise from computer itself but I detected a slight ‘whine’ noise coming from the AC adapter and I am not sure if this is normal. I don’t have a voltage meter so I;m not sure if it’s pulling the full voltage or not. When I looked at the AC adapter more closely, I am now suspicious that the metal clip(s) inside the round part that plugs in to the computer may be pushed too far down into the ‘hole’ because it looks like the clips should be flush. Is anyone familiar with the appearance of the ac adapter end enough to check, because if that’s the case I feel like it must be an adapter issue. Otherwise? I am open to your suggestions.

It still is under warantee– apparently my only local service provider is the UPS Store? Anyone had experience with having UPS repair their Toshiba? Thanks much for your time and help!

Hey, I have a Dell Inspiron 9400 laptop, its between 1 and a 1/2 and 2 years old. The battery light on laptop flickers amber 3/4 times and then goes to green.

I know that the amber light on flickers when battery is super low and a steady green when it’s charging. But I’ve never seen it flicker between the two. This is happening despite weather or not its on charge.

Just to add, recently my ac/dc adapter has gone, when i plug it in it beeps quitley… so i’m using my uncle charger, this has a lower voltage but it’s been fine to use in the past? Im reallly confused.

    please help asap.

    Symptom Not working on Battery

Hi I have a Lenovo 3000. I unplug the battery when fully charged and using at home. Yesterday I plugged the battery in and removed the power chord and the PC powered down. I left it for a while thinking the battery needed to charge but it still will not powerup under battery (completely dead) I have noticed that when I power it on with the battery in it and connected to the adapter the front battery light flashes red twice. Lenovo Service tells me that it is either the motherboard or the battery. The battery is less than 9 months old but not under warranty (according to them) as it had already been replaced under warranty. Does anyone know if the flashing Battery Light means anything?

    Hi,

I reported a problem with my HP Pavilion zv6000 laptop back in February when I first had the battery problem, after having replaced it with the original that came upon purchase. That one lasted me less than two months and I recently bought another one.

The problem now is that once it’s partially discharged and connected to the AC Power, it starts charging and then somewhere down the line, the laptop suspends with the ‘battery low’ pop up. When I bring it out of suspension, it shows the battery completely depleted, for whatever reason. Then, the second I power down, the battery starts charging. This isn’t normal behavior. My laptop is a little less than 2 years old, and though I’m looking into purchasing the Dell XPS 1530, I still want this laptop in working order since it’ll still be “in the family” so to speak.

If anyone can shower some light on this, I’d be really really grateful.

You’ll have to disassemble the laptop, remove the motherboard and replace the power jack as it explained in this article.

Read this post: Laptop switching to battery while connected to AC adapter
It’s possible that you have a problem with the power connector and it has to be resoldered.

By the way, I posted your question here.

IBM determine that my 11 month old battery was dead. Normally it would have been under warranty but since it was part of a battery recall replacement it only had 3 months…one has to wonder why!

OK I now have a new battery. I’d like to pull the other one apart with as little damage as possible because I have the feeling it will be a simple loose connection or dry joint.

Any one know a web site with instructions to dismantle this battery?

    Hi,

I have a Toshiba Satellite Pro A60 and have experienced problems with the battery. Because the original battery seemed dead I replaced it with a new one (not a Toshiba one though). Charging this new battery for the first time went perfect and I could use the laptop for hours. As advised on the package of the new battery I had it fully discharged before recharging it again (a cycle advised to repeat for three to five times). However recharging it for the second time takes hours: the battery led (orange) keeps on turning on and off (not really fast flickering: it is on for 10 seconds and off for 4 seconds). The icon in the corner shows at times that it is being charged and at other times that it is using the power adapter. The percentage however keeps on going up but it goes up very slowly. The whole process by the way is the same whether the computer is on or off.
I hope someone could help out and show that buying a new battery wasn’t a waste of money. Thanks

    I have a Sony VAIO laptop (VGN-SZ55GN).

Like all laptops, it has an LED charging indicator that necessarily lights up while charging and supposed to stop when the battery is fully charged (100% full).
I notice though that whenever I charge my battery, the LED charging indicator lights up BUT stops doing so at the 85% charge level. (which is 15% shy away from being 100% fully charged).

It is always like this REGARDLESS whether I ENABLE or DISABLE the Battery Care Function.

Is there a way to fix this to give me the ACCURATE battery charge level?

NEVERTHELESS, charging continues until 100% (as indicated by the Battery Meter on the taskbar).

HOWEVER, after charging to full 100%,  then I turned my laptop off  then I turned it back on  and, after the whole Startup process has been completed, it immediately drops to 96% or less (again, as indicated by the Battery Meter on the taskbar)

Is this normal? If not, can this be fixed? Anyone has an explanation?

    Tnx so much!

Can my laptop break down if..?
Ok, here’s my problem.. when I go to work or something or when I’m not home, my siblings play my laptop. Since I just got a new battery for my laptop I am currently trying to conserve it. So at the moment I am not using my battery, I did not input it into my laptop. So I am only running on my A/C adapter. However when they are done playing they do not take off the A/C adapter, so I am wondering could it be possible if they don’t take it off could my laptop break? Like fry up or something?
    Thank you.

I have a IBM R51 laptop that is pretty old. I put it to sleep for about three days, I simply forgot it was on. When I tried to start it back up it only worked for about 1 minute then shut off. I plugged the power supply in and the light on the computer says it is charging but when I press the On button the battery light just flashes green and amber and the computer does not start. I just would like to know if this a common battery problem and all I need to do is replace the battery or is this a bigger problem and I should seek professional help. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    I have a IBM R51…..

I would suggest unplugging the battery and AC adapter. Then holding the power on button for 30 seconds.
Next, insert the AC and power on – if all good then once fully powered on, insert the battery – it should now start charging as normal.

Dell Inspiron E1505 – weird battery charging problem:

Whenever I plug in the adapter, the battery charging light goes on for about 30 seconds and then turns off. The battery shows a low charge–around 15% right now. If I unplug the adapter and then plug it back in, the same thing repeats again. The battery is only getting charged for those initial 30 seconds. There is no difference if the computer is on or off. Also, if the adapter stays plugged in and I restart the computer, the charging light goes on while the system is booting, but once Windows is up, it turns off again.

I don’t think the battery is bad, since it is, apparently, getting charged up–very, very slowly–in these 30-second spurts. Over the last week, it’s gone from 9% to about 15% charge.

    Any ideas, folks?

In an HP 530 notebok the battery is connected directly to the motherboard.
The problem is related to the AC adapter, battery or motherboard. I don’t know what else can cause this problem. I’m really confused because you replaced all parts. :/

By the way, I have exactly the same problem with my laptop (I’m typing on it right now). I know that in my case the problem is related to the motherboard. It’s doing exactly the same when the battery is installed. That’s why I removed the battery and running just from AC power. Without battery it works 24 hours/day.

I have an HP Pavillion DV6000, I just bought a new AC adapter because my other one, when it was moved the wrong way the power was completely cut off. My new seemed to be working completely fine, but, I’m recieving a similar problem i had with the other. When its plugged in, the LCD light around the plug everynow and then flickers off for about a second and then comes back on. This is all before it’s turned on. When I turn it on, I get up to windows with nothing different happening. Then when I log in, it shows my battery charging then not charging, and then this keeps happening until it dies. So I tried running the laptop without the battery in at all. It worked fine. I put my battery back in, and then i got the same problem. So, at the moment i have it plugged in and turned off, the LCD light still flickers on and off ever so often, but it seems to charge a bit.

    Any help is apreciated greatly!

Nevermind, I found a solution, it was as simple as going into device manager, going to Batteries and uninstalling the Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery, then clicking the Action tab at the top and clicking Scan for hardware changes.
Hope this helps someone else too!
I got this solution, and there are a few others, from the following page, http://hellen12.blog.co.uk/2009/07/29/hp-pavilion-dv6000-battery-problem-not-charging-6609027/
