Can I upgrade the CPU in my laptop?

I was wondering if you knew what limitations are imposed on a Toshiba Satellite 1800-100 when it comes to CPU upgrades. It’s currently equipped with a Celeron 800, that makes it a 100Mhz FSB coppermine compitable, but would it support a 1Ghz P3 coppermine? More? Less? Cache? Bios flash? And so on. Thanks for your time.

I’m getting this question over and over again. Unfortunately, laptops are not very upgradable computers. You can increase the memory size, install a faster and bigger hard drive, but you don’t have a lot of options on upgrading the CPU. I’ve been looking for this kind of information for months but didn’t find anything that I can trust. If you find any, please post it here so other people can benefit. I guess that laptop manufacturers do not provide any information on upgrading laptop CPUs. Just for fun I tried to install faster CPUs on some new Toshiba models, but it never worked for me.
I think that with Satellite 1800 you have a better chance on upgrading. I found that in Toshiba Satellite 1800 the same system board can handle 2 different CPUs: Pentium III 850MHz and Pentium III 1GHz, but for Celeron processor it has a different system board part number (might be the same board). The only way to find out is to try it, but I think that you understand the risk. This experiment might damage your laptop and you’ll get an expensive paper weight. Here’s a guide for replacing the CPU in Satellite 1805.

    Hi Just upgraded a Toshiba Satellite A100-062 from t5200 at 1.6 ghz fsb 533 to a t 5600 at 1.833 mhz and 667 fsb same socket M.
Easy 15 mins and fan clean.
No bios change 5.1 works fine.
    20 % faster for £10 from ebay sl9sg cpu.
I think a t7200 with 4 mb l2 cache rather than the 2 mb will also work.
Also 2 gb ram from 1 gb. much better.
    Will support 4 gb.
    Hope this helps somebody.

I’ve been googling about this for a Asus F3SV. First I went to check which chipset the notebook has: Intel PM965, then looking at the datasheet in intel’s site http://www.intel.com/assets/pdf/datasheet/316273.pdf, it mentions support to Core2Duo family, with FSB 533 and 800 MHz. Mine currently has a T7300 @ FSB 800Mhz. Checking Intel’s Core2Duo mobile cpu family http://www.intel.com/products/processor/core2duo/mobile/specifications.htm, there are various cpu’s at the 800 Mhz FSB, T9500 being the fastests. Now, if this was a desktop upgrade, at this point I would consider this CPU to be upgradable on this chipset, but reading comments of other people’s experiences, there seems to be some hidden catch to upgrading notebooks. Anything I can be overlooking, before I plunge in the cash?

S Owen, I’ve managed to upgrade my Acer Aspire 5002 from a Turion 1.6GHz to an Athlon 64 3200+ 2.2GHz, plus 2GB DDR RAM instead of 512k. It works very well.. no need to upgrade bios or something alike. In may case it was just plug&play.

Hi there! I’m glad to know that many had success on upgrading toshiba 1800 series… I managed to disassemble it but CAN’T put the new processor! It fits perfectly on the cpu slot but it doesn’t slide back left to be locked… Is it any trick or hint or hidden button that should be pressed or twisted or something else in order to slide it back?!?!? Thanks very much.
