All four USB ports in my Toshiba Satellite A105 laptop fail to work with a USB flash drive
I have Toshiba Satellite A105 laptop. I have never used any USB devices before and today I bought a new USB flash drive. For some reason, when I plug it into the laptop, it doesn’t work. I’ve tried all 4 USB ports without any luck. The drive works fine with my desktop computer. Do you know what is wrong with my laptop?
I think I know what is wrong with your laptop. Last Friday I fixed Toshiba Satellite A105-S1013 laptop with exactly the same problem. The laptop didn’t recognize my USB flash drive. Apparently the device was detected by Windows because as soon as I plugged it in, a balloon pooped up and it said “USB Device Not Recognized”. I tried to plug in three different devices and always got the same error. I found that this laptop is running BIOS v1.20 not even listed on Toshiba website for this model. I downloaded and installed the latest BIOS v1.90 and fortunately it fixed the problem. You can download the latest BIOS from Toshiba support website and install it right from the Windows environment.

I also have some issues with my Toshiba Satellite A135-S2386, all 4 USB ports fails, it is 2 days after that. Sometimes it recognizes my USB devices but just for a little time and then again it doesn’t recognize.
I updated to v1.60 of the BIOS Firmware and it still has the same behaviour
I tested with Windows 7 and Windows XP and also GNU Linux Ubuntu and all of them fails.
I guess I bought a bad laptop, because it also fails the Inverter of the LCD Display and the lamp turns off. I’m totally disappointed of Toshiba. I thought they were good laptops.

amanda,
You’ll find the BIOS update here:
http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/home.jsp
Click on the product support and search for downloads available for your model.
The latest version for your model is 1.60

hi there. i’m having the same issues as alot of the above mentioned. i have a toshiba satellite a135-s2266. all 4 drivers that have previously worked just fine are all now not working. when i plug anything into the usb ports it tells me that it doesn’t recognize the device, then when i click on it and try to solve the issue it says ‘unknown device’.
i did have to take this computer in a while back to have the bios password reset. don’t know if that has anything to do w/ any of these issues.
i am willing to update the bios version, but i’m not sure where to go to do this. is there a link where i should go to get the update? i looked all over the toshiba website and i can’t find anything. thank you very much for your time.

Jim,
Try removing memory modules one by one. Test the laptop with each module separately, it’s possible that one of them is bad. Could be memory related problem.

USB quit working yesterday – had no idea why. Found this site through Google and tried it. IT WORKS GREAT!!! Went to the Toshiba support website and downloaded the latest BIOS (up to v2.3 now) for the A105 S101, followed their instructions, just ran it from Windows to do the reflash the the easy way, re-booted (automatically) and presto – the USB works perfectly. Couldn’t have been easier. Thank you for your help!

Dear LF,
My issue is a little different. My Toshiba P35-S609 will not update the USB port drivers to 2.0. The specs for the machine state they are 2.0, but even with WinXP SP2, they are still at 1.x.
Is there any way to make them recognized as 2.0?
