My laptop will not boot with a new AC adapter

I have a Toshiba 320 CDT. The grandson lost the AC Adaptor. When I constructed another AC adaptor and plugged it in I get what appears to be a code? “53″ flashes on the AC LED. Nothing else happens, the battery doesn’t charge, its dead. But when I push in a bit on the on/off switch I will see a few flashes on the Battery LED. Wonder if someone can help me with this problem.

First of all, make sure that you use an AC adapter with correct voltage and amperage. The voltage should be exactly the same as required by the laptop specification; if 15 Volts adapter is required, you should find one that outputs exactly 15 Volts. The amperage should be as required by the specification or more; if 2A adapter is required you can use an adapter that outputs 2A or more. For example, if the laptop requires 15V-2A adapter you can use an adapter that outputs 15V-2A, 15V-3A, 15V-4A, etc… But if the laptop requires 15V-4A, you cannot use 15V-2A adapter. BTW, your Toshiba Satellite 320CDT requires 15V-2A AC adapter.

That helped, once I got the voltage correct I am getting a charge on the batterys and the flashing light has turned to steady green. Now my problem is getting the keyboard ribbon cable back in place properly, a lot of patience I guess. I should not have dismantled the unit.

First off apologies for leaving this as a reply but I couldn’t find an ask question link…

I have a Satellite a60 that worked fine for a while but one day gave off a burning smell, then the ac adapter started making a squeek squeek noise… I switched it off thinking it was just overheating. It ran fine on battery until that ran out, then when I replugged in the power supply it continued to make this noise.

Quick check showed the AC input putting up very low resistance, opened it up using your top guide to find that the copper heat plate shown in fig 17 of the dismantling instruction (bottom left) was discoloured and the components beneath on close inspection (Q510 and Q504?) looked to be toast… Nightmare!

CAn you suggest if it possible to find these parts and if it is if fixing them is likely to solve the problem?

    Many Thanks, Stuart

    Hey Stuart,

Sorry man but I think I cannot help you. I do not work on a component level and if a system board goes bad I just replace it.

I guess you can look up for a new motherboard on ebay. I just searched for “A60 motherboard” and found one for $114. Sounds like a good price.

Or, if you are experienced with soldering, you can wait for a cheap “not working” board and then transfer all needed components. I don’t think that I would go this route. You mentioned that two components looked to be toast, but there could be more bad components that look normal. I would probably go with a new board.

    Hi,
A couple of days ago I have installed a new Windows XP into my ASUS M5N laptop. The problem is when i unplug the power cable the computer restarts. However, it is supposed to switch to the battery mode.
I am using a program called “Power4 Gear” which controls the battery performance (when you are on battery mode you can either increase or decrease the battery life by using that program). I have been using Power4 Gear since I bought my laptop. So i don’t think the probem is because of Power4 Gear. The problem occured after I had formatted the laptop and installed a new Windows XP.
I would be very glad if you could help me with my problem.
    Thanks in advance

    Laptop Freak Says:

    Burak,
First of all you have to figure out if it’s software or hardware related problem. I’m not familiar with Asus M5N laptop, can you easily remove the hard drive?
Remove the hard drive and start the laptop from the AC adapter power. You will probably see Asus logo and then the laptop will try to find a boot device. Now unplug the AC adapter. Does the laptop switch to the battery power or it shuts down?
If the laptop successfully switches to the battery power when there is no hard drive (operating system), then most likely it’s just a software issue. Reinstall Windows XP again, but this time try it without Power4Gear software.

I have just purchased a Toshiba M35X (S149), but the “incorrect” adapter was included, which had the “incorrect” polarity. I realized this after the laptop shutdown and the AC power light on the front of the laptop started flashing (green).
It will not power on, but the light is flashing. What kind of problem and costs am I facing?

Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide.

No, I’m awaiting the arrival of the correct adapter from the retailer which I bought the laptop. I did remove the battery and try to restart it with just the battery, but it was dead (w/flashing green light).

Are you suggesting that when I receive the correct adapter there’s a chance it will restart?

Hi – I wonder if you can help me. I have an Hp nx6125 that was working fine but recently shut down whilst connected to the AC adapter. I tried to switch it back on and it lit up for about 2 seconds and then turned straight off again.I initially thought that the CPU had overheated or something and so I thought I would let it cool down and then a few hours later tried again. The laptop worked – Great! I thought, but when I pluged in the Ac adapter it immediately shut down. This only appears to happen when the laptop becomes warm and it is the correct adapter. I have checked that the fan is working and it appears to be working fine both when the Ac adapter is plugged in and unplugged. Do you have any ideas what this could be?
If you can help your wisdom would be very appreciated.

I have a Toshiba Satelite A70. It will not run with just the adapter (without the battery). With the battery in, it will not run on AC (just the battery). the battery will only charge when the ac plug is pressed to one side. Plugged in straight there are no lights on to show its plugged in. If I’m lucky, I can get the battery charged and turn on the computer for a little while. I had a tech look at it to see if the ac plug needed to be soldered onto the motherboard and he said it didn’t (but also didn’t know what to do with my computer). What is the cause of this, and is there anyway to fix it (without calling Dell)? I know it isn’t the motherboard or the battery because it beeps when it is not attachted to the computer as well. Do I just have to suck it up and buy a new adaptor? Thanks, Cassie

    Gregg,
I believe Pavilion ZD7000 has a power jack attached directly to the motherboard, and if the jack is faulty you’ll have to resolder or replace it. Here’s my post about replacing faulty power jacks in Toshiba laptops, I think the procedure will be very similar for all laptops with power jacks attached to the motherboard. Before you replace the jack, you’ll have to open up the laptop and remove the system board. Check out the Pavilion zd7000 notebook maintenance and service guide for step-by-step disassembly instructions. You can find a new power jack on ebay if you search for “zd7000 power jack”.

I have a Toshiba Satellite P25 S526. About 5 months ago I had to replace the AC adapter that came with it and chose an IGO Wall160. For the past several weeks the adapter has been acting strange. If I unplug it from the laptop the power would go out on the adapter. I would then have to unplug it from the wall, wait a good 30 seconds, the LED comes on (without being plugged in!) and the goes out, and I then replug it in. In the past few days it has really become testy, if I move the laptop very much the AC adapter goes out. Now if I try to plug it in with the laptop on or off the LEDs on the laptop and on the adapter go out and nothing charges. I assume it’s time I replaced the laptop’s internal battery (I’ve had the machine for two years) but even with the internal battery removed the AC adapter will not let me power up the laptop — it just goes out. It sure is frsutrating! Any ideas? Thanks.

  24. 24
    Laptop Freak Says:

    Ken,
You are experiencing a problem with the AC adapter, so why do you want to replace the battery? I would recommend using an AC adapter especially designed for your laptop. You can find it by the Toshiba part numbers: K000006860, K000040120. Satellite P25-S526 requires an adapter that outputs 19V-6.3A. I’m scared of generic AC adapters.

Now if I try to plug it in with the laptop on or off the LEDs on the laptop and on the adapter go out and nothing charges.

Try this. Remove the laptop battery, plug in the AC adapter and start the laptop (without the battery installed). Can you turn it on, do you get any LED activity?

  25. 25
    Ken Says:

When I remove the internal battery from my laptop and plug in the AC adpater the LEDs on the adapter and laptop light up, but the minute I try to power up both lights go out and the laptop’s dead.

When I replaced the original AC adapter I went through Toshiba. Not only was the sales/service person rude and snotty but they didn’t have any Toshiba adapters in stock — they’re the ones who sold me this lemon! I was desperate at the time (I rely on this laptop for work) but I later noticed that I could have saved $35 by ordering through another business. Is there an alternate place for Toshiba parts (other than eBay)?

According to this table India uses 230V~50Hz power. Your AC adapter should handle it without any problem because it’s rated for 100-240V, 50-60Hz but the power plug is shaped differently. I would look for a universal power plug adapter. Just search on Google and you’ll find it.

    Hi Littlecujo,
It’s hard to say without testing the laptop with a known good AC adapter. It’s possible that the adapter is bad and will not output correct power. It might be enough to charge the battery when the laptop is off, but not enough to start the laptop. Can you start the laptop from the AC power without battery installed? If you have a multimeter you can measure the output voltage to see if it’s correct. It also possible that you have an issue with the motherboard.

What if you wiggle the AC adapter plug in the power jack while turning on the laptop (without battery installed)? I’m thinking maybe you have a loose or broken power jack?

It might indicate that the AC adapter is bad. Find a multimeter and test the voltage that the adapter puts out. Without testing the AC adapter it’s hard to say what is wrong. It might be just a bad adapter or it also could a problem with the motherboard.
You can remove the battery and try starting the laptop just from the AC adapter power. If you still have the same problem, it’s not a battery issue.

    Laptop Freak Says:

    Tom,
You have to find a voltmeter and find out what voltage the AC adapter puts out. If it’s normal, probably you have a problem with the motherboard/power board. If the voltage is much lower or higher than it should be, most likely you’ll have to replace the AC adapter.

This only happens if the bettery is less than fully charged (say 75% or less). The computer runs fine on AC alone. I’ve been having problems with AC adaptors. The first one I had (that came with the laptop) lasted about a year. It then started not working – the green light would be on on the adaptor, but it wouldn’t be powering my laptop or charging the battery. But eventually it stopped working completely, so I got a new adaptor.

Hi I have a Prostar 4774 laptop and have a problem with it shuting down on me but only when the ac adapter is connected to it. It works fine when it is running off the battery but when i plug in the charger while its on it will shut down, sometimes it takes 5 mins other times 30 mins and it won’t re-boot untill the charger is unpluged. It charges the battery fine when the computer is off, the laptop requires 20v, 6A. the charger is not the OEM one but it is rated as follows: 18-24v 160 watts max, typical voltage 19v, ac input 100-240v 2.5A. Any help would be great.

Strange problem: when my laptop (Dell Latitude C640) is plugged in, the cpu usage spikes exactly every two minutes, causing whatever I’m doing to stutter for a second (most noticeable when playing music.) Using process explorer, I identified that it was one of the svchost.exe processes causing this periodic increase in cpu usage. As far as I can tell, I’ve got rid of any malware, and I should have plenty of ram and processor spare. I’ve also tried turning off some of the svchost processes. The bizarre thing is that does not happen at all when the laptop is just running from the battery. This leads me to suspect a hardware problem, although the ac adapter seems to work fine in charging the battery and keeping the laptop powered. Would be grateful for any help, as this has me baffled.

I have a toshiba U200 laptop. It’s new, and everything is fine except for one odd issue. When I run the laptop w/ the AC adapter and use an external monitor (LCD), there is a faint flickering on the monitor (visible with darker colours). Unplug the AC cord and run the laptop on battery power and voila, the problem goes away (at least to my eyes). Is this an issue with the AC adapter and power source?

    Hi,

I have a Sager NP5720 laptop. When I plug the AC Adapter into the unit the adapter starts beeping, the light on it starts flashing and it doesn’t power the laptop (no lights, no battery charge). I have checked the AC Adapter with a meter, and it’s putting out the correct power. After this started happening the laptop worked fine until the battery ran out

Is this a problem with my AC Adapter or laptop? If its my laptop what might be wrong?

  68. 68
    Laptop Freak Says:

    Desmond,
It’s hard to guess until you test the laptop with a known good AC adapter. I think it still could be a problem with the adapter or you might have a faulty motherboard. I had a similar problem before. I tested the AC adapter and it gave me correct voltage but the laptop didn’t start from AC. I tested the laptop with another adapter and it started without any problem.
    Find a test adapter.

    Output: 19V – 4.7A(4.7A)

How can that charger be dead? i searched this problem on the net, and found a lot of people have this problem. sometime the laptop charges off the charger it self not from the wall current. so i’m wondering if i buy a new charger, then wat if i have this same problem again. The AC adapter does not seem to provide any power (no lights on by the lock clasp) and the battery seems dead. Is it the AC adapter? The battery?

First of all, test the AC adapter with a voltmeter. If it outputs 19V, most likely there is nothing wrong with the AC adapter and you have a problem with the power jack (known issue with Satellite A70 and A75 laptops). In this case it is necessary to open up the laptop case and take a closer look at the power jack.
I believe only laptops sold in the United States are eligible for the extended warranty.

    Gary,

AC adapter charges laptop normally when laptop is switched off. AC adapter fails within minutes if laptop with fully charged battery is on. AC adapter fails within seconds if battery pack is removed and laptop is switched on.

I think your problem may be related to the power jack, apparently it’s not making good connection with the motherboard and has to be resoldered. This is one of the most common laptop related problems.
Try this. Turn on the laptop and wait until the battery stops charging. Now wiggle the power plug inside the power jack. Can you adjust the power plug so the battery starts charging again?

  90. 90
    Gary Says:

Thank you for your observation, but the problem is not that the battery stops charging. The problem is that the AC adapter fails. The original AC adapter stopped working altogether. The off-brand replacement also fails, but it has so far recovered each time after unplugging it and allowing it to rest.

The battery charges normally so long as the laptop is switched off.

Dell’s wizard dialog suggests that this is a known problem. Note that the wizard specifies testing for ac adapter failure with the battery removed. The wizard then terminates without diagnosing the problem. It merely provides a reference number. It may have also suggested motherboard replacement.

    Thank you,
    Gary Glaze

  91. 91
    Laptop Freak Says:

    Gary,
If you experience the same failure with two different adapters and it’s not related to the power jack as I suggested in my previous comment, then there is a problem either with the motherboard or the battery. Probably it’s related to the motherboard because the battery charges when the laptop is switched off.

ok about a month ago, my laptop charger died, no idea why, took it to a computer shop, and he opened it up and said there is no way you can repair that.

so i managed to get another one off school, tell i can find a new charger, i found one, i cant use a universal one because its apparently an odd size, so the computer shop managed to find me one that looked a similar size, it was almost the correct size bar from it was a couple MM big, but it fitted in with a push. before plugging it in i thought i better check the output power and instead of it being the 19V i had before it was 30V, so i thought better not plug it in and turn it on, and il just go get my money back.

i went to go and plug the charger i borrowed back in, and there was a great spark leapt out of it, it almost got me, i then thought its not charging and looked at the power pack and the LED was off, i thought oooo no this hasnt blown too, but strangly when i unplug it from the Laptop the LED lights back up, this had led me to belive that the power connector in the laptop is shorting on something, when i pushed the purchesed one in.

the only problem is my laptop does not charge, any ideas what i should do, is it fixable if i just open the laptop up, and try to see if anything is touching or should i take it to the computer shop to see if its repairable, i hope it is…….

I spilt water on the laptop so I took the charger out and the laptop was working then I dried the laptop and plugged in the charger, the adapter blinked and the laptop charged but after a while the laptop froze I manually switched it off and it turned on its own it booted but as the windows launch started it froze. I took the charger out and manually switched it off this time it didn’t turn on by it self. NOW it worked fine without the charger and as I put the charger in it froze but the battery was charging. Finally I tried changing the plugin and tried it in the other room the charger stopped working at all it doesn’t even blink no more :| I need HELP

Hi, we have two Dell Inspiron 6400 laptops. They`re about a year and a half old. The batteries no longer hold a charge so I rely on the AC adapter One of my AC adapters stopped working…it started working sometimes and not other times…until it just stopped working altogether. The green light doesn`t go on on the AC adapter.

I bought a new one from ebay, that was new…it has a Dell sticker on it, looks proper…except the box on it is slightly larger than the ones that came with the laptops. It says it`s for the PA-12 family though, just like my originals.

Well it seems to work fine, except my touchpad mouse stutters. It never did it before, until the one laptop used the new AC adapter. I restarted and it seemed to work fine….I used the AC adapter on the other laptop and it was having the same stuttering touchpad mouse thing happening. Put the AC adapter back onto the first laptop and it worked fine….for awhile. TOnight it started stuttering again.

It`s gotta be the AC adapter, ti`s the only thing that`s changed. But I don`t understand how it could just affect the touchpad. The screen doesn`t flicker…the green light on the adapter doesn`t flicker….nothign else seems to be wrong except for teh awful jumping and stuttering pointer.

Is this crazyÉ Is there a fixÉ

(Also, on an unrelated note…sometimes when I type my questions marks come out like this É, and my at sign comes out like this ”

    What`s that all about!é)

Okay.. here’s a few things to consider.

Computers are covered by manufacturer warranty, AC Power Adapters are not.
AC Adapters are covered by retailer warranty only.
What does this mean? Your computer manufacturer more than likely will laugh if you cry about a malfunctioning Power Adapter.
Run back to the store that you bought the computer from, as fast as you can. If your purchase is still covered by warranty, drop that piece of crap on the counter and get a new one. Otherwise, the manufacturer will gladly sell you a new AC Adapter, online (bitter irony,) through one of their retailers.
These bad boys go for $30 – $100, so check retailers for extended warranty packages. Considering shoddy AC Adapters, $70 – $100 for an extention to an extended warranty is a STEAL! :D
All you gamers out there, learn to undervolt your systems. Otherwise, the retailers will know you by name (with a new AC Adapter laying in wait.)

I don’t think that your statement is correct. If your laptop is still within 1 year manufacturer warranty, your adapter will be covered too (except physical damage).
If your adapter just stopped working, it will be replaced under warranty.
If it’s damaged (broken connector, damaged power cord, etc…) it will not be covered.
I’ve replaced hundreds power adapters for IBM, Lenovo, HP and Toshiba under warranty. Maybe other manufacturers have different adapter replacement policy?

    Nemodius Says:

Most laptops out on the market today are heavy-duty gaming and/or multimedia machines. Much like the power supplies in todays desktop models, they simply cannot handle the workload. If they can, it will tax the supply heavily (shortening it’s life dramatically.) Most AC chargers on the market can only handle operation or charging power only (not both.) If you need the laptop now, and the AC can’t handle the workload, take the battery pack out. Charge the battery during idle times, much like sleep or mealtime (as if we have time for those.) Once the battery has obtained a full charge, the AC Adapter can maintain the battery and operation of your system with minimal/normal effort. Otherwise, the AC Adapter will overheat (failsafes shut it off at that point.) Once it returns to functioning temperatures, it comes back online. Running AC Adapters at full throtle and high temperatures shortens it’s life dramatically also. Then, its another $100 down the turnpike.

This may be somewhat a solution to your problem. Last resort: Shut it down before bedtime and plug it in. If its not fully charged by wake-up, its probably the battery. Before making any quick decisions, try another AC Adapter if possible (ie. exchange it for another, try a friend’s Universal AC Adapter, etc.)

Battery Packs are covered by the laptop’s maufacturer warranty, while the AC Adapter may not.

now, it can only power on thru ac and cannot run on batteries…is there any way or any part that i can purchase so that i can again use it in battery…

Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide.

    Rob,

So I have a sony laptop vgn-fs980 series and I have recently been having trouble starting the computer up. I push the start button and the start-up lights remain on and it will not go to the start-up screen. Then it will stop loading and just stay like that. However, if when I first start it up I hit the button it will sometimes successfully start-up.

I think there could be a problem with the memory (RAM) module. Could be bad connection between the memory module and motherboard, or the memory module itself is going bad. Do you have two modules installed in the laptop? Try removing them one by one and test the laptop with each one separately.

I think you are lucky that your laptop starts at all. What could be wrong? I don’t know. It’s possible that the battery fuse which is located on the motherboard is fried, but it’s only a guess.

    I need some help.

Got this FOSA Power4 laptop from a friend of mine. He lost the original AC adapter, but he got it working happily with an IBM Thinkpad adapter. But becos he needs the IBM adapter for his IBM laptop, i got the laptop without an adapter. Since FOSA is not a brand common in my country, i have problem getting the original adapter. I checked the specs needed for this FOSA creature. It requires a 20v 3.5A adapter. 2 days later, i managed to grab hold of this DELL laptop adapter (Model AA20031 PA-6) with the same voltage and amp rating, but with a different output connector. So i modified the output connector to the one compatible for FOSA, ensure polarity is correct and then power on.

Result: Weird. The green light on the adapter lights up for a while then slowly faded off. I turn on and off the main switch, same thing happened. Switch polarity and try again, the green light is on, but laptop not charging.

Dun have a clue to wats going on… can help?

I have a strange problem. I have a Toshiba Qosmio F20 here is the problem the laptop will power on and run on battery only no A/C connected for the duration of the battery life about 85 min. With the battery removed and the A/C only it will start and then shut right down. When both the battery and A/C are installed it will run but shuts down after about an hour of operation. The battery light and A/C turns green when the system is off, but when on the battery light remains orange, however the power led is still green??? I thought it was a heat problem but now I think I have ruled that out. I think that maybe the A/C adapter is bad? I don’t think it is a bad power connector either, if it is this model is a seperate conector not attached to the motherboard.

I have had the machine apart fully cleaned all componets new thermal paste ect. I know this is a long explanation but I really need help.

    Thanks,
    Jeff

    1. Are you using the original Toshiba AC adapter with correct voltage and amperage output?
    2. Could be a problem with the DC-IN power jack even though it’s not soldered to the motherboard. Maybe the jack is broken? You can test it with a multimeter as explained in this article:
Laptop does not start. Is it bad power jack or motherboard?

    Ott99 Says:

yes it is the origianl power adater. is it possible that it is shorting out? the jack does not seem to be broken because it charges the battery.

    Thanks for the quick reply.

Hi, my problem isn’t related to ne thing I have found on your site but it is related to charging. My computer will suddenly freeze when I plug my charger in. Though suddenly is the incorrect way of putting it. It freezes after about 10 mins. It charges fine, though off charger I only get about an hour of use where as I used to get at least 2. It doesn’t freeze or muck up at all when it’s not plugged in. Neither my comp or the charger gets hot when it freezes either so my computer savy friends and I are at a loss as to what is happening. It still freezes when on charge and the battery isn’t in. I have tried every thing from cleaning my registry to running multiple virus scans, that all turn up clean. Please tell me you can help.

Hi. I have an Acer Aspire 1690 laptop. Within the past month whenever I plug in my AC adaptor, it instantly freezes my computer. The computer runs fine on the battery (with the exception it doesn’t hold a charge for long) so this leaves me constantly having the computer shut off, or else I have to shut it down manually. Do you know why my computer freezes when plugged into the power cord?

    Hello,

    I have a Dell Vostro 1700 laptop. WinXP SP3.

Was having problems of it locking up. Tried system restore. Now it will only boot into Safe mode and only when it runs off of battery. If you have it up and plug in AC power it locks up. Even in the BIOS settings, if I plug in power it locks up. Trying to figure if it is hardware issue. Laptop is not under warranty.

    Thanks,
    T.

If the laptop lock up in BIOS, it’s a hardware related problem.
First of all, check the heat sink. Make sure it’s not clogged with dust. It’s possible that your laptop locks up because of overheating. Blow off dust from the heatsink and test the laptop again.
Try reconnecting memory modules. Do you have two modules installed? Remove them one by one. Test the laptop with each one installed separately.

    Hello,

Thanks for the reply. Most appreciated!

Looks like I had a couple of issues. I reseated the memory and look around at fans and such. Didn’t find much. Same results. Tried a few other things but got nowhere. Ended up doing a repair to winxp. It will now boot up Ok but only on battery. It will run fine on battery so I don’t think heat is an issue. The very second I put ac adapter in the back of the laptop it freezes completely. Have to hold down power button to shut off. I’m going to see if I can find a replacement adapter at Bset Buy or somewhere to see if the issue is the adapter or in the laptop.

    Thanks,
    Tim.

Hi, I have a Toshiba Satellite A200 laptop. From the past few days my laptop has started hanging ocassionally. This is sometimes due to plugging in the charger or sometimes when I connect a USB to my laptop. My antivirus had expired, o I got a new one and scanned my hard drives, but found no virus. Ultimately, I cant figure out the actual cause behind it. Whenever it hangs I cant do anything and finally I have to reset it. It has been a hectic task for me. Kindly help me…
