My laptop will not boot with a new AC adapter
I have a Toshiba 320 CDT. The grandson lost the AC Adaptor. When I constructed another AC adaptor and plugged it in I get what appears to be a code? “53″ flashes on the AC LED. Nothing else happens, the battery doesn’t charge, its dead. But when I push in a bit on the on/off switch I will see a few flashes on the Battery LED. Wonder if someone can help me with this problem.
First of all, make sure that you use an AC adapter with correct voltage and amperage. The voltage should be exactly the same as required by the laptop specification; if 15 Volts adapter is required, you should find one that outputs exactly 15 Volts. The amperage should be as required by the specification or more; if 2A adapter is required you can use an adapter that outputs 2A or more. For example, if the laptop requires 15V-2A adapter you can use an adapter that outputs 15V-2A, 15V-3A, 15V-4A, etc… But if the laptop requires 15V-4A, you cannot use 15V-2A adapter. BTW, your Toshiba Satellite 320CDT requires 15V-2A AC adapter.

Strange problem: when my laptop (Dell Latitude C640) is plugged in, the cpu usage spikes exactly every two minutes, causing whatever I’m doing to stutter for a second (most noticeable when playing music.) Using process explorer, I identified that it was one of the svchost.exe processes causing this periodic increase in cpu usage. As far as I can tell, I’ve got rid of any malware, and I should have plenty of ram and processor spare. I’ve also tried turning off some of the svchost processes. The bizarre thing is that does not happen at all when the laptop is just running from the battery. This leads me to suspect a hardware problem, although the ac adapter seems to work fine in charging the battery and keeping the laptop powered. Would be grateful for any help, as this has me baffled.

Hi I have a Prostar 4774 laptop and have a problem with it shuting down on me but only when the ac adapter is connected to it. It works fine when it is running off the battery but when i plug in the charger while its on it will shut down, sometimes it takes 5 mins other times 30 mins and it won’t re-boot untill the charger is unpluged. It charges the battery fine when the computer is off, the laptop requires 20v, 6A. the charger is not the OEM one but it is rated as follows: 18-24v 160 watts max, typical voltage 19v, ac input 100-240v 2.5A. Any help would be great.

Brenton,
Can you start the notebook from the battery at all, may be just for a moment? Can you see the LEDs flashing when you turn on the notebook without the AC adapter plugged it?
I think you might have a dead battery.

It just goes black and then i have to start it up again. The laptop was able to work without the AC adapter plugged in until just recently, I don’t know whats wrong. PLease help Laptop Freak.

Michael H,
I think you’ll have to replace the power adapter.

Alison,
Be very careful with the power plug on the AC adapter. Do not pull the power cord from side to side while the adapter is plugged into the laptop, because the connection between the cord and plug might get broken and you’ll have to replace the adapter. Don’t use generic adapters.

My Dell Inspiron 1100 came with an AC Adapter that makes an awful amount of noise whether the laptop is on or off. It whistles, hums and wheezes, honestly it sounds like an asthmatic trying to breathe. It continually makes a high-pitched whistling noise, varying in pitch every 10 seconds or so. Everything works fine, but the noise is irritating and can be heard throughout the house (if you listen quietly). Any thoughts?

Hey,
I’ve been having problems with AC adaptors. The first one I had (that came with the laptop) lasted about a year. It then started not working – the green light would be on on the adaptor, but it wouldn’t be powering my laptop or charging the battery. I thought it was just a bad connection, as when it first started happening I could make it charge by pressing it in more firmly or holding it at a certain angle. But eventually it stopped working completely, so I got a new adaptor.
But that was only about six months ago, and now the same thing has started happening again. Is it normal for adaptors to stop working like this? Am I doing something wrong that’s causing them to do this? I really don’t know much about computers, so I hope the description’s been clear enough.
Thank you!

Hello I own a presario R3000. I have had it for a few years and have used it with the battery out of it (I was told using it with it plugged in with battery installed shortened the battery life). About a week ago it would no longer power up. with ac power. When the power button is pushed the light underneath the button flashes. But it would not fully power up. Since I needed it to work for my job I kept pressing the power button (20+times) and it eventually started. The next day I brought the battery and with the battery installed it runs great off battery power and even charges the battery. But it still will not power up with out running on battery power. Even with the battery in it is just running off the battery power and when the battery dies so does laptop. Once last clue I did get it to run twice with out battery in since it has been acting up. And both times when it finally started the screen was really dark like the fn+f5 keys were held in to darken the screen as dark as it would go. So I held the fn+f8 and lightened the screen back up and it ran fine till I put it away for the day.
Is this just a bad keyboard causing all the trouble ? I tried to power it up with the keyboard disconnected and unit will not power with keyboard missing.

I have a 2004 Toshiba Sattelite A55 laptop. I am currently on my third ac adaptor having, it seems, burned the other two out. The AC light blinks both when I plug in or unplug the ac adaptor. THe computer will not boot up. Last time this happened, I took out the battery, jiggled it, and replaced it in its socket and it was fine, for about 2 months. What gives?

Shovez,
You’ll have to replace/resolder the power jack, you cannot power up the laptop via USB cable.

Paul,
It happens only when the laptop is turned on and runs Windows or it also happens when the laptop is off? May be you have a software related issue? Read comments 27,29,30 here, the problem is different by the solution might be the same.
If the battery charging is controlled by Dell utility, uninstall it and let Windows control the battery. Make sure you have the latest version of BIOS installed on the laptop, upgrade the BIOS if necessary.

Hi,
I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 running Windows XP.
If the computer is on battery power and the battery is not fully charged, and then I plug in the AC adapter to recharge it, sometimes the following problem occurs: upon connection to the wall socket, the LED on the adapter turns green but then after connecting the adapter to the computer the LED turns off and recharging stops after about five seconds.
This only happens if the bettery is less than fully charged (say 75% or less). The computer runs fine on AC alone. I am not sure if it’s the adapter because the problem seems to be influenced by the recharge state of the battery. I have replaced the battery, but that did not resolve the problem. I have not tried to replace the adapter.
Any thoughts? Great website.

Have tried to wiggle the power cord, it’s a tight fit so it doesn’t wiggle, but have tried to push in and out and that doesn’t work. I will have to take it in and see if it’s the motherboard I guess. Thanks for the help at least I know that it’s not going to be a simple fix.
January 9th, 2007 at 5:22 pm
Tom,
You have to find a voltmeter and find out what voltage the AC adapter puts out. If it’s normal, probably you have a problem with the motherboard/power board. If the voltage is much lower or higher than it should be, most likely you’ll have to replace the AC adapter.
January 8th, 2007 at 11:03 pm
Yeni,
I think you might have a power jack problem. The power jack in your laptop might be loose or broken. To fix the problem it’s necessary to open up the laptop and resolder or replace the power jack.
January 8th, 2007 at 9:50 pm
Sue,
It might indicate that the AC adapter is bad. Find a multimeter and test the voltage that the adapter puts out. Without testing the AC adapter it’s hard to say what is wrong. It might be just a bad adapter or it also could a problem with the motherboard.
You can remove the battery and try starting the laptop just from the AC adapter power. If you still have the same problem, it’s not a battery issue.
January 8th, 2007 at 9:42 pm
littlecujo,
Sounds like a problem with the motherboard to me.
What if you wiggle the AC adapter plug in the power jack while turning on the laptop (without battery installed)? I’m thinking maybe you have a loose or broken power jack?

Hello.
I also have a problem with my Sony Vaio PCG-V505DX. The laptop will not recognize the charger and will not power up.
I have ruled out the battery as the laptop does not get power from the charger whether the battery is in place or removed.
The green light on the tip of the charger is lit but I am uncertain as to whether that means the charger is 100% functional or not.
My questions, how do I determine, without buying anything, whether the problem is with the power adapter/charger or with the Receptacle/Power Board inside the laptop?
Thank You

Hello, I have a compaq presario R3000 about 2-3 years old. Since last week the adapter was not charging to the computer when it’s plugged in. So I bought another adapter (thinking I have a bad adapter), the green light was on, but the computer still is not charging. With my old adapter, when I turn it around, twikling it, sometimes it will charge, but I have to keep holding it at the same place, if I take my fingers off, then it won’t charge again.
What do you think is the problem? Thank you so much for your help.

Hi, we have an HP (Compaq) nx9008 laptop with original battery and original AC adapter, got it 3 years ago. We were using it the other day, plugged in, all fine as usual. We paused the DVD, walked away, and when we came back the laptop was off and would not power on. The indicator light showing the AC adapter is plugged in would not light up.
If I press the on/off switch, lights will flash as it usually does when powering on and if it lasts more than a couple seconds I see the Windows logo display. Then the laptop shuts down again (the light showing that the AC adapter is plugged in also lights up momentarily).
Is this a battery problem – eg battery dead and won’t charge at all, or an AC adapter problem, or??
Thanks!
Thanks!

I have tested my Travelmate 2200 and my power supply works on another Acer laptop perfectly and it puts out 19 Volts. I have disconnected the power supply from my laptop and it doesn’t show any power lights on but it will work off the battery until it goes dead. And the laptop will recharge. I have tried to start the laptop without the battery and it starts for a milisecond and then stops. I’m thinking that it’s something with my motherboard, can anyone confirm this for me? Thanks
January 2nd, 2007 at 7:14 pm
Hi Littlecujo,
It’s hard to say without testing the laptop with a known good AC adapter. It’s possible that the adapter is bad and will not output correct power. It might be enough to charge the battery when the laptop is off, but not enough to start the laptop. Can you start the laptop from the AC power without battery installed? If you have a multimeter you can measure the output voltage to see if it’s correct. It also possible that you have an issue with the motherboard.

Clint,
Then the only way I see is reimaging the hard drive back to factory defaults using the recovery DVD. Backup all personal files (documents, video, music, etc…) because everything will be erased during the restore process, boot the laptop from the recovery DVD and follow the wizard.

I have a travelmate 2200 and I can’t get it to run off AC power. It runs on battery, and the power supply works because it recharges the battery. However the AC will not run the laptop. Is there something wrong with my power supply cord or is there a switch in the laptop that is somehow not working? Something is going on cuz it use to run on AC power and now it won’t. HELP PLEASE and THANK YOU.

I think this is a software problem…I ran registry cleaners on my girlfriend’s Toshiba laptop (Easy Cleaner and Crap Cleaner) along with Easy Cleaner’s ‘Remove unnecessary files’ option.
Since then, the laptop won’t seem to work on AC power. The battery must be charging, because it will work for a good while before the little red ‘X’ appears and it goes into hibernation. My guess is that the cleaner programs removed some file somewhere they shouldn’t have that tells the laptop to use AC power while it’s plugged in.
How can I restore the AC use? I don’t want to restore the backup registry, because her computer was clogged with garbage…
Any help would be appreciated, as I’ve already promised to pay for the repair if we have to take it to a shop

I have a dell latidue and my issue is I can not power up the laptop. When I plug the ac adapter in to the wall the green light comes on on the adapter but when I plug it into the computer the green light on the adapter goes out. I took the battery out of the laptop and the same thing happened. I am not sure if the problem with the ac adapter or with the laptop.
