My laptop will not boot with a new AC adapter

I have a Toshiba 320 CDT. The grandson lost the AC Adaptor. When I constructed another AC adaptor and plugged it in I get what appears to be a code? “53″ flashes on the AC LED. Nothing else happens, the battery doesn’t charge, its dead. But when I push in a bit on the on/off switch I will see a few flashes on the Battery LED. Wonder if someone can help me with this problem.

First of all, make sure that you use an AC adapter with correct voltage and amperage. The voltage should be exactly the same as required by the laptop specification; if 15 Volts adapter is required, you should find one that outputs exactly 15 Volts. The amperage should be as required by the specification or more; if 2A adapter is required you can use an adapter that outputs 2A or more. For example, if the laptop requires 15V-2A adapter you can use an adapter that outputs 15V-2A, 15V-3A, 15V-4A, etc… But if the laptop requires 15V-4A, you cannot use 15V-2A adapter. BTW, your Toshiba Satellite 320CDT requires 15V-2A AC adapter.

Thank you for your observation, but the problem is not that the battery stops charging. The problem is that the AC adapter fails. The original AC adapter stopped working altogether. The off-brand replacement also fails, but it has so far recovered each time after unplugging it and allowing it to rest.

The battery charges normally so long as the laptop is switched off.

Dell’s wizard dialog suggests that this is a known problem. Note that the wizard specifies testing for ac adapter failure with the battery removed. The wizard then terminates without diagnosing the problem. It merely provides a reference number. It may have also suggested motherboard replacement.

    Thank you,

    Gary,

AC adapter charges laptop normally when laptop is switched off. AC adapter fails within minutes if laptop with fully charged battery is on. AC adapter fails within seconds if battery pack is removed and laptop is switched on.

I think your problem may be related to the power jack, apparently it’s not making good connection with the motherboard and has to be resoldered. This is one of the most common laptop related problems.
Try this. Turn on the laptop and wait until the battery stops charging. Now wiggle the power plug inside the power jack. Can you adjust the power plug so the battery starts charging again?

I’m having similar problems with my Compaq Presario M2000 notebook too. I had to wiggle the adapter to the power connector of the notebook or my laptop battery won’t charge and won’t turn on if it doesnt have it’s battery on. That metal thing which I plug into the DC gets extremely hot very quickly in matter of minutes also.

I’ve been looking for information on how to dismantle my notebook to get access to the DC power jack but looks like there’s too much risk involved. Too many screws to look out for and thin wires in the way. Almost made me feel like Im defusing a bomb or something. Im a college student living on college budget and couldn’t afford to buy a new laptop and the warranty is already up. I bought the laptop only 2 years ago.

I would really really appreciate it if anybody could give me a guide on how to dismantle my laptop and get access to the DC power jack. I’s gonna cost me $120 if I were to send it to the shop to repair. My email address is hafiz_felix2000@yahoo.com or Instant Message me at hafiz_alone2006@hotmail.com

Hi my name is David, I have a Dell Laptop Inspiron 6000 and I bought a new battery and new ac adapter for it. However, the laptop does not seem to read the ac adapter. It stays at 20% charged and doesn’t charge anymore. I leave it plugged in all day all night and it does not charge. As long as it is plugged in the computer works and I can use it, but I can’t take it out of the room really. If someone could help me, please that would be great.

    Hi,

I have a Toshiba Satellite A45-S130, and I’m having some trouble turning it on. I know for a fact that the battery is out of power, but when I try to start up the computer by the AC adapter, the AC adapter LED flashes yellow. Does this mean that I have to buy a new AC adapter or is there something disconnected internally?

I have a Toshiba Satellite M35X-S149 laptop that won’t power up unless the AC cable is unplugged.

Any suggestions as to why that might be happening?

I’ve had the machine for a couple of years, and it just started doing this a couple of weeks ago.

Once you unplug the AC and power it up, you can plug the AC back in with no apparent issues.

    Thanks for your help!

    Scott,

I bought a Gateway laptop around 6 months ago.

Isn’t your laptop still covered by the manufacturer’s warranty?

    Scott Says:

Hi, I bought a Gateway laptop around 6 months ago. After around 3 months the charger died, meaning I bought a new one. Then around 3 weeks ago the charger started showing signs of cutting out again.

However now when I plug the charger in the green light on it flashes, and when I unplug it it stays solid. I tried another charger and it does the exact same.

    Any ideas what’s up?

    Michael,

I plug in the AC adapter to the wall socket and the LED on the adapter turns green. Then when I connect the adapter to the computer the LED turns off it does not recharge.

I think there can be a problem with the motherboard.

    Laptop Freak Says:

    LLH,

The AC adapter does not seem to provide any power (no lights on by the lock clasp) and the battery seems dead. Is it the AC adapter? The battery?

First of all, test the AC adapter with a voltmeter. If it outputs 19V, most likely there is nothing wrong with the AC adapter and you have a problem with the power jack (known issue with Satellite A70 and A75 laptops). In this case it is necessary to open up the laptop case and take a closer look at the power jack.
I believe only laptops sold in the United States are eligible for the extended warranty.

I have a Toshiba Satellite A70 purchased in 2004. Two days ago the computer stopped powering on. The AC adaptor does not seem to provide any power (no lights on by the lock clasp) and the battery seems dead. Is it the AC adaptor? The battery? You’ve mentioned the Toshiba A70 settlement and the extended warranty, does it cover this and is it eligible in Canada?

hi,I have toshiba satelite m55-s3314, it was having this problem since last few weeks. I would plug the charger in back of my laptop and the lights would’nt come on. Then I would just wiggle the wire of the charger, and hold in that right position and then lights would come on and start charging. But yesterday my laptop battery was empty so I tried charging it. But it wont charge. I even wiggle it like I did before. Then I took that charger to best buy. They said the charger is dead. How can that charger be dead? i searched this problem on the net, and found a lot of people have this problem. sometime the laptop charges off the charger it self not from the wall current. so i’m wondering if i buy a new charger, then wat if i have this same problem again. Would i have to keep on buying it? or is there any sollution to it.
sorry for the poor english, english is’nt my first language.

I have a Presario R3000 and the power jack is loose. If I wiggle it the laptop will power and run on battery. It will run off of AC power but when on AC power the display darkens. Almost like it is conserving battery. When the AC cord is removed the display brightens back up. Any ideas.

    Arika,
If the original adapter outputs 19V-4.7A then you have to find one witch outputs 19V and 4.7 or more A.

    Hi,
I am trying to replace a power adapter for a Gateway Solo 1150. I have found the exact adapter, but I’m curious about what must be exactly the same for adapters.
    Mine has:
    Input: 100-240 V~ 50-60Hz 1.5A(1.5A)
    Output: 19V – 4.7A(4.7A)
I’d appreciate any information, such as can the 1.5A be replaced by 1.3A.

    Desmond,
It’s hard to guess until you test the laptop with a known good AC adapter. I think it still could be a problem with the adapter or you might have a faulty motherboard. I had a similar problem before. I tested the AC adapter and it gave me correct voltage but the laptop didn’t start from AC. I tested the laptop with another adapter and it started without any problem.
    Find a test adapter.

    Hi,

I have a Sager NP5720 laptop. When I plug the AC Adapter into the unit the adapter starts beeping, the light on it starts flashing and it doesn’t power the laptop (no lights, no battery charge). I have checked the AC Adapter with a meter, and it’s putting out the correct power. After this started happening the laptop worked fine until the battery ran out

Is this a problem with my AC Adapter or laptop? If its my laptop what might be wrong?

    Hi,

I have a toshiba U200 laptop. It’s new, and everything is fine except for one odd issue. When I run the laptop w/ the AC adapter and use an external monitor (LCD), there is a faint flickering on the monitor (visible with darker colours). Unplug the AC cord and run the laptop on battery power and voila, the problem goes away (at least to my eyes). Is this an issue with the AC adapter and power source?

It’s possible that the AC adapter you are using is not working properly. I would recommend using an adapter that puts out 20V and 6 or more A.
