I have a Dell Latitude D500 notebook and of late, the LCD display has been acting rather strange. Sometimes on booting up, I get a display which shows a white background with a series of color vertical lines across the screen. When that happens, I would need to switch it off for a while (sometimes for a whole day or two) and it would be working like normal again. This problem has been occurring intermittently for the last two months now. I have been doing some research on LCD screen on the Net but have not come across anything like this. A friend suggested that I remove just the screen from the laptop and wrap it up in plastic bags and freeze it in the freezer for a day. This freezing technique is something he found on the Net but that was for an issue regarding reviving “dead” hard-disks. I am just not sure if it works the for “temperamental” LCD screens.

First of all, I would try to find out what part of the notebook is causing the problem – the display assembly or the motherboard/video card module. Hook up an external monitor to the VGA port on the notebook and turn the computer on. Set the notebook to display video on both screens – internal LCD screen and external monitor and wait until the video fails. If the video output fails only on the internal screen and the external monitor displays it normally, them most likely the problem is somewhere in the display assembly. If the video fails on both screens, then it’s the motherboard/video card fault and it’s not related to the notebook display assembly. In this case, you’ll have to replace the motherboard or the video card, if it’s a separate module.
As you mentioned above, the problem is intermittent, so it might be just a loose connection. I would try to reseat the video cable on the motherboard and on the back of the LCD screen. If it doesn’t help, then I would probable try replacing the video cable, because it’s a less expensive part in the display assembly. Here’s Dell Latitude D500 notebook service manual, it shows how to remove and replace notebook parts.
When the LCD screen displays a bad video, try to twist the display a little bit by moving top right and left corners into opposite directions, apply some tension on the screen and see if the video changes somehow. Don’t twist it too much or you can break the screen, be very gentle. If the video changes somehow, for example lines disappear, or more lines appear, or you can even get a normal video output, then most likely it’s the LCD screen failure.

When the screen first started to give problem last month, I had tried reseating the video cable both on the motherboard and on the back of the LCD screen a few times. I even used a fast drying contact cleaner on both contact areas. It worked the first time but not subsequently. In the end, I had to switch off the unit for a couple of days before the screen went back to normal. As for connecting the laptop to an external monitor when the laptop screen failed, I have done that too. It worked perfectly fine on the external monitor every time so I guess the problem is indeed somewhere in the display assembly. I will have to wait for the screen to fail again before I can try your last suggestion on twisting the display at the top in opposite directions. Will keep you posted on how things go. Many thanks.

    Hi there,

My Dell’s screen just went kaput again. I have taken a picture and attached them for your comment. I have also done the following as suggested.

    1. Lowering and raising the LCD screen repeatedly a few times.
    2. Twisting the 2 top corners very slightly in opposite directions.
    3. Pushing the back of the LCD screen lightly towards the front.
    4. Re-seating the VGA flexible cable at the sockets both on the mainboard and the one behind the screen (at the top).

As you can see in one of the pics, it works fine when connected to an external monitor. I am thinking of changing the flexible VGA cable or FL inverter or both. What do you think?

Thanks for your help. I appreciate it.

    JL,
It’s definitely not the FL inverter because the backlight still works fine. I think that you have a bad screen. Just recently I repaired Satellite M55 laptop with a very similar problem and I had to replace the screen.
Is it possible that you have a bad video output because of a defective video cable? Yes, it’s possible, but the only way to test it is replacing the video cable. If you can find a cheap video cable, try to replace it but be prepared for the worst – bad LCD screen.

I have almost the same problem, only horizontal lines that make everything blurry or fuzzy.
It works fine with external monitor hooked up
It also stops when i press firmly on the plastic just under the bottom of the LCD screen, about 3 or 4 inches right of center.
This is above the inverter, so could it be a ground issue?

    Laptop Freak Says:

    Dirk,
I would remove the LCD mask to find out where exactly you have to press, so the problem goes away.

    Dirk Says:

I have done so, but i cannot seem to pinpoint the problem. I can only seem to make the problem worse now. i have ordered a replacement wire harness to see if that helps.

    Dirk Says:

I forgot that I had also wanted to ask if this problem could somehow be related to a ground issue. Is it improtant for the inverter board or the LCD screen itself to be properly grounded to the case? Just wondering if you have ever seen any problems similar to this due to an improper ground or something.
    Also:
These narrow horizontal lines just keep poping up all across the screen. They usually only start to appear on the left and right sides of the screen and then get worse and eventually are affecting the entire screen area. If you have any “best guess,” (perhaps from past experiences,) as to what might be causing this, (ie. bad wire harness, inverter board, LCD screen, or video card…) I would really appreciate it.

I hate to just start replacing parts untill it starts working again, which of course adds up. It also might save me some time.

    Laptop Freak Says:

    Dirk,
Here’s my guess. The FL inverter board provides power to the screen backlight bulb and if you are getting the backlight, the inverter works fine. So, it’s not the FL inverter fault.
Most likely it’s not the video card problem, because the external monitor has a normal video output.
It might be a bad video cable, but I doubt it. If the video cable fails, usually the screen displays a bad video right on startup. Or the screen has a normal image until you move the screen or touch the video cable.
I think that you might have a bad screen.

The Right 1.5″ of my lcd screen has fine horizontal lines that flicker in cyclic patterns. The color of the lines depends on what the normal image of that location would be. The movement / pattern depends on what is drawn on the entire screen.

The lines are not solid, looking closely I would say 1/3 of the pixels are tweaked. The tweaked pixels line up vertically in the same columns. The vertical placement of the lines varies.

Color of normal picture -> color of lines on this color
    black -> green
    white -> red
    red -> yellow
    green -> light green

On gray and brown the pattern is much tighter, and forms a zig zag.

The pattern changes with mouse movement, not only the lines horizontally lined up, but they all seem to respond. When I give no changes to the screen then the pattern of waving, flickering remains constant.

I purchased this Dell Lattitude C600 as a damaged unit: broken right hinge – the two metal supporters that bolt onto the base were broken at the bolt hole, and at the cross member. I think it was dropped and impact was with the lower right corner of the monitor cover. However the plastic was not damaged, confusing.

The e-bay photo showing the item had the broken hinge but no screen anomolies. Perhaps it changed in shipping?

The system is usable, fully functional, although a few times the mouse has decided to keep slowly moving in one direction.

    thank you for any suggestions

It sounds like a bad LCD screen, I’m almost positive. Just in case, connect an external screen and check the video. I’m pretty sure it’ll be fine.

There also could be a problem with the touchpad.

I was able to fix my problem with the horizontal lines across my screen, (see previous posts.) I replaced the video cable to start with, but this did not seem to help any. So I carefully checked the inverter board over and cleaned the connections on it. I also reseated the CPU on the motherboard. While accessing the processor, I noticed many of the screws holding down various components inside were loose. Maybe this was due to normal wear and tear, or maybe it was 1/2 to closing time on a Friday at the assembly plant and they got a little careless, who knows. But I went over everything, cleaned all the connections and such, reseated the memory, hard drive, DVD drive, etc, and tightened everything up. I carefully reassembled everything, (the screen hinges were also loose and needed tightening,) and then I powered up. The horizontal lines were gone and the display was normal again. I even knocked it around some to see if I could get them to reappear, but no luck. I have been using it for about a week and a half now and the lines have not reappeared. So somewhere during the whole process I just described, I fixed the problem. Anyway, I hope this helps anyone else having this problem, it’s something to try anyway.

This is a question: I have a Toshiba Satellite P-15. I has a NVIDIA video card GeForce FX Go 5200 AGP video card. I need to display the same Desktop image on the Laptop and an additional external monitor hook up from the monitor port on the back of the Laptop. I have tried all the “F” keys and the NVIDIA display wizard software but all I can get is exchanging or moving the Desktop from the Laptop to the external monitor and back. I have an Old Sony that will display the same Desktop image on both monitor simultaneously. So, if the solution is new driver I need to know what the driver is called and actually where to get it. Then what needs to be done to install and what keys to press to fix my problem.

    Thanks in advance

    Dale Cox,
I just tested a Satellite P15 with an external monitor and I was able to get both screens working. To enable both screens, you have to press on Fn key and hold it down. When Fn key is down, press one time on F5 key and a menu should appear on the screen. It will give you the following options: LCD, LCD/CRT, CRT. While the Fn key is still down, press on F5 key one more time, and the second option LCD/CRT should get highlighted. As soon as you release Fn and F5 keys, you should get video on both screens.
    Does it work for you?

This is a question: I have an HP NX7000 notebook. Recently my LCD started going nuts with Horizontal lines 5 mins after bootup. When this would happen, the computer also locked up completely and the CPU would max out. I thought it was a driver problem but then it began happening during boot up – when the computer was still in the BIOS. Now, the laptop will power up but the screen remains off all the time and the laptop appears to still be locking up because I never hear it boot into Windows. I’ve also tried hooking up to an external display – no luck. I was thinking of replacing the inverter but I think i may have a problem on the motherboard since the whole computer locks up. Or is that normal behavior for a failed inverter? Thanks for any help you guys can provide.

  16. 16
    Laptop Freak Says:

    Bobby Rich,
It’s not the inverter board problem, do not replace it. The inverter board is responsible for providing high voltage AC power to the backlight bulb and the laptop will not lock up because of a faulty inverter.
I don’t know exactly what is going on with your laptop because you have all kinds of different problems: horizontal lines on the screen, CPU maxed out, no video, locks up, etc… I think you might have a loose connection somewhere inside the laptop. Just recently I was able to fix a “dead” Compaq nx5000 laptop by reseating the video cable on the motherboard.
I don’t know if you feel comfortable taking apart laptops, but here’s what I would try to do for troubleshooting.
Reseat the RAM, the hard drive and any other cards that you can access from the bottom of the laptop without disassembly. Test the laptop. If it doesn’t work, minimize the system. Remove the hard drive, DVD drive, wireless card and see if you can get stable video output without these modules installed.
If the problem still exists, I would probably disconnect the laptop LCD from the motherboard and test the laptop with an external screen. To disconnect the laptop LCD, you’ll have to lift up the keyboard, access the screen video cable and unplug it from the motherboard. You can find disassembly instructions for Compaq nx7000 notebook on the HP website. Download the maintenance and service guide for HP Compaq business notebook nx7000. The file is big and it might take some time to get it. After you disconnect the laptop screen, start the laptop with an external monitor and see if you still have the same problem. If the issue is gone, then the problem is somewhere inside the laptop display assembly, might be just a loose cable. If you still experience the same issue even after you unplugged the laptop display, then the problem is somewhere on the motherboard. Reseat any cable that you can access under the keyboard, and if it doesn’t help then most likely you have a faulty hardware, may be a bad motherboard.

    Laptop Freak,
Thanks for your help. So, I reseated the display to the mother board. Suddenly the screen was working again. But just when I thought it was safe to celebrate, I put the laptop back together, turned it on, and 5 minutes later the display went black and the comp. locked up again. So I disconnected the display again and ran the computer on an external monitor and everything works great so I think it’s safe to say that I don’t have a motherboard problem. Here’s where it gets weird. I reseated the main display again, connected the keyboard, but didn’t screw it in or pop the plastic back into place – the laptop works great. Then I put the rest of it back together and the laptop fails again. At this point I’m at a loss – any other ideas??? Also, when the laptop was running but not fully back together, I tried twitching the cable between the board and the display but it appeared to have no effect. Thanks.

There is a ringing sound that comes and goes, apparently with CPU usage. This sound was the same before the lcd change.

when does the sound go away >>
If I select a window to move, as long as I move the window around it goes away until I stop moving it. If I do a dir /s on c:\ it also goes silent.

what does it sound like >>
It sounds like a high pitched ringing combined with a low pitched crackling. It is faint enough to be barely heard, but anyone sitting near me for a couple minutes starts to notice it.

where does the sound originate >>
It comes from the top center of the base unit, just to the right of the power button, just below the “i” button. ( what is that i button for? )

I think it is related to whatever the flex strip plugs into.

Yeah, that’s a weird one. Unfortunately I don’t have any universal solution to fix this problem. Make sure that you put correct screws into correct holes. If you put a long screw into a wrong hole, it might touch the motherboard and create a short.
Even though the laptop base and the top cover are made from plastic, they have some metal pieces inside too (for grounding purpose). It’s possible that the laptop case has a loose piece of foil or metal grounding structure and it touches the motherboard when you put all together. I would probably take a closer look inside the laptop base and on the opposite side of the top cover.
When all screws are removed and the laptop works fine try to apply some pressure on the different spots of the top cover and see if you can make the laptop to lock up. Examine the spot for any loose wires or anything else that can cause a short.
I would also try to put screws back one by one and test the laptop after each screw. It might help you to find a problem spot.
BTW, last week I fixed a laptop with kinda a similar problem. The laptop had an intermittent problem with the backlight. The backlight turned off (sometimes) when the display panel was moved. I found that the LCD cable got jammed between the screen and the hinge and the shielding on the cable got cracked exposing the wire. When the LCD was moved, the wire touched the hinge creating a short.

    Tom,
I know exactly what you are talking about because I’ve seen a very similar problem on some Toshiba Tecra (I believe M2) laptops. This sound is not loud but very annoying, it comes somewhere from the system board and sometimes it goes away if you unplug/plug the AC adapter.
Unfortunately I don’t know if it’s a common problem with your Dell laptop. I cannot even say if replacing the motherboard will fix this problem because I tried it on one of Tecras I had and it didn’t help. I even replaced the CPU with the fan and it didn’t help either. Sorry man, I don’t know the answer. Please let me know if you find a solution.

    Hi,

I had the same problem as described on this site: funny horizontal thin noise pixel lines on a Dell Precision M7. The problem appeared today after knocking the laptop kinda hard against the desk. The line appeared at the same position, regardless of resolution/OS/graphics vs text mode, etc. I tried the screen tapping trick, didn’t work. Tried to open up the panel and reseat the screen connectors, useless.
So I tried next the screen-bending trick – and guess what, it DID work right away! Must admist I had to twist quite a lot, say about 1 inch. But now the lines are gone, screen’s clear, and seems solidly stable.

    Thanks for this great tip!

I have a Dell XPS M170 and a very similar problem. A while ago colored (in three flavors: c, m, and y) vertical lines started appearing on my screen at all times (boot, games, whatever). They have since multiplied (330!). They do not go away when the screen is twisted, pushed, whatever. They are most visible on black backgrounds and IN-visible on white backgrounds. After that a new variety showed up that are not colored but blur or grey my screen in the affected area. This is not visible on colored of black screens but IS visible on white screens. I’m quite certain that it is a bad screen (I’m under warranty so I’m not worried) as it does not display the same behavior when attached to an external monitor.
Here’s my question: Could it be the video card that is killing the screen instead of just the screen being bad? I don’t want to break any external monitors as the one I have costs as much as my computer. Is there an instance of a laptop video card breaking an external monitor? The monitor I have is a 40″ LCD HDTV with a PC input. I really don’t want to test Sony’s CS department.

Try to find out witch part of the laptop has to be affected (after 10-15 minutes) so the screen starts working again. Can you bring the screen back to life without lifting the whole laptop, can you make it work just by bending/twisting (just a little bit) the screen? Will the screen start working if you press on the palmrest, any spot around the keyboard or on the keyboard itself. I’m just trying to figure out witch part of the laptop has to be touched in order to get video output on the laptop LCD.
Yes, it could be a loose video cable. If you feel comfortable, try reseating the cable on the motherboard and on the screen itself.

In the comment 25 you mentioned that the external CRT monitor works perfectly so I assume that the motherboard functions properly. Can you boot the laptop into Windows with the external monitor attached? Can you work in Windows with the external monitor?
From my experience, if the internal LCD screen displays a bad video (vertical or horizontal lines) but the laptop works perfectly fine with an external monitor, then it could be a bad video cable, loose video cable connections or a bad LCD screen. You’ve reseated the video cable so it’s not the connections. So it’s either the video cable fault or the LCD fault.

Then this week the LCD started flickering then went blank (dark). Switch off then on again lasts a few seconds before going blank. Boot into the bios screen lasts between 5-20 seconds then blank same booting with floppy and CD. After reading some other comments had a look and can see a image on the LCD. Shine a light on it can see it fairly well. So one would suspect the inverter ? but why would the external monitor be gone as well or just coincedence? (external monitor does work with other pc)

    David,
I afraid that you might have an issue with the motherboard. A failed FL inverter board wouldn’t affect the video output on the external monitor. It’s hard to say what’s wrong because the issue you have is not a common one, even though it sounds like the inverter board issue (except the external monitor part).

    Hello!

I have a similar problem. Occasionally, my Toshiba Satellite M30-309 will display random, small vertical colored lines (usually over graphics) for a short time and then they will disappear (though sometimes the screen will flash black for a second, or occasionally nearly everything will turn to a black square and I have to reboot). I originally thought it was an overheating issue, but I’ve noticed that it does this at random times despite the temperature especially when the laptop is resting on my lap. I also installed a Temp/Fan Control Utility that tracks my computer running at, usually, between 35 Celsius and 45.

I’ve also noticed that orientation of my notebook (such as how it is sitting on my lap) effects whether or not the lines appear (though I can’t pinpoint exactly where is best). Most importantly, I just noticed that, when the lines appear, if I firmly press down on my laptop to the left of the touchpad (where the Internal WiFi card is located) the lines will go away (though I’m not sure if that has always been the case).

Any ideas on what I can do? I don’t have an external monitor to plug into so I can’t check if it is a motherboard problem.

    Thanks a lot!

I have a Toshiba Sat A75 or something like that I think I know what my problem is I just want to know if I have the right solution.. I purchased this laptop with a broken LCD screen I was just using it for my CarPc with a screen in my car connected by the VGA I think my VGA on the laptop has a short in it now where I would bring it in and out of the house connecting it to diffrent monitors it worked fine at first now I can only get it to work in the house by pulling or bending the VGA cord (which is also messing up my cord) I was wanting to know if I could use KINAMAX USB 2.0 to VGA & SVGA Adapter or Extend to 2 Monitors instead of the VGA on the back of my laptop just connect the usb to the laptop and the VGA to my screen will that work

    Nate,
Usually you can download new drivers from the manufacturer’s website.

    Hi,
I have a Fujitsu Lifebook C Series and recently the screen has caused me some problems. The colors are all messed up as in when the color should be black it is red. Then when I try to change the color it says that I only have an option for 16 bit. Also I when I try to change the pixels it doesn’t work and stays at the same setting. What is the problem?

I have exactly the same problem as JL (judging by the look of the screen), but permanently. From the startup on I just see those irregular vertical lines (I can’t even see BIOS).
And the problem continues even if I leave it on for hours, or turn it off for days.
    External monitor works great.
    Backlight works great.
I have twisted, shaken, etc the LCD screen. I have unplugged and plugged (and twisted) every cable related to the screen. Absolutely no change.
Small (probably irrelevant) detail: the colour of the lines change according to content being displayed.

Thanks so much for your help.

Just to echo what many others have said already:

I have a Dell Latitude D620, and I have recently started to experience the vertical stripes problem. I noticed that if I just pushed the screen back or forwards a little, it would go back to normal. However, as of late, that has not ben sufficient to get rid of the stripes. So today I had to connect an external monitor in order to see what I was doing. (The external monitor works perfect, btw.)

I then found this thread and I can confirm that both the advice about twisting the display and the advice about pressing firmly just below the display (about 1.5 inches to the right of centre) made the stripes go away temporarily. A few minutes ago I pressed down for a while and perhaps even firmer than before, and the stripes have not returned since. Now I’m afraid to move the display at all in case the stripes should return again :)

So it looks to me as if the problem is some loose cables or something similar. If the problem returns, I’ll have to open up the computer and see for myself, I suppose.

Thanks for the advice so far in this thread!!!

    Hi,

I am having the same problem with my Dell Latitude D510 as JL in the third post…with the image.
Any idea what his exact problem was and how he resolved it? And if not, could I get his/her contact details?
The display behaves strangely, sometimes its frozen and other times it works perfectly. Very grateful for any comments.

I have a Dell Latitude D500 that locks up when you boot it up. The fans spin for 4 seconds and stop. the hard drive churns for 4 seconds, stops. it sits and does nothing. If I unplug the display, then the bios screen shows and then XP launches – I can then reseat the display cable to the motherboard and the laptop works fine until the next boot.

The problem does not happen if I remove the display cable and use an external monitor.

    so

motherboard, video, or display – what do you think I need to replace?

    Lennie Says:

I have a Dell Latitude C600 and have the same problem. I replaced the motherboard with a brand new one thinking that this would solve the problem, but the problem is still there. The screen sometimes turns red and sometimes turns a very light color then it starts to get those lines in it. Sometimes it will just start working by itself.

I had attributed the problem to overheating because at the same time this happened the fan quit running and the laptop got pretty warm. So I was really surprised to see the brand new fan on the new motherboard not working either, along with the same funky problem with the screen.

But I’m really not sure if the heat is actually the culprit, because the screen came up red the very first time I turned it on after replacing the motherboard and it hadn’t had a chance to heat up yet.

It has the latest (A23) bios, just like the old MB. And I put new ram in it too. But the processor is the one I took out of the old MB.

I have just encountered a problem with my Dell Latitude D620. The keyboard stoped functioning properly, it’s supprising that the dead keys are only for numbers 1,2,3,4,7,8,9,0. I tried all the way to key in the charaters in but there appeared nothing. I guess that because it was overheated for some hours yesterday. What should I do?

Hi … I need help … Pretty please? I have a Toshiba Satelite P35-S6112 17″ notebook. I’ve had it for a few years now. About a year ago, it started to develop vertical lines a couple at a time. After researching the problem, and determning if the problem was in the display by hooking my notebook up to an external monitor, I purchased a new display and installed it. Four day later, two new lines … then another and another. Is something causing the the lines or is it my bad luck and it’s just another defective display? Could it be the display harness is defective and it is causing the lines? If it is possibly the display harness/cable, will the vertical lines not be present after the display harness is replaced?

Thank you very much for any and all ideas and suggestions.

This is what’s up, more than likely. How dirty is the fan? Is it khaki or brown colored? If so, or even if not, the fan, cooler, and whole insides should be checked for dust, resulting in the comupter overheating, which will cause images, freezing, crashing, your color’s and resolution to automatically decrease, you know…….. Another thing to check out is that the fan is on the bottom left hand corner, and it blow’s out of the back right near where you plug in the power cable to the back of your computer, so make sure your rubber boot’s are on the bottom corner’s as they are suppose to be, try to sit your back left hand corner of the laptop over the edge an inch or two. I’m sure the problem is over-heating. Maybe your fan’s burned up as well, who know.
