When I use the DVD/CD-RW drive I get several error messages
I recently had the hard drive replaced in my TOSHIBA SATELITE 1805-S254. When I use the DVD/CD-RW drive I get several error messages. When I put a disc (audio, data, DVD) in I get “THE DISC IS CORRUPTED OR WRITTEN IN A FORMAT NOT SUPPORTED BY WINDOWS” error message. Usually I just eject the disc and reinsert it and it runs fine.
If I choose to make an audio CD or send data to the disc, I get “MISSING DRIVE” message. If I use media player to burn a disc it tells me to “CONNECT A BURNER”.
It all worked fine before I replaced the HD. I checked the recovery disc and there is no specific program to install the DVD/CD-RW software. I’m worried that since it stopped burning discs, one of these days it will stop reading them as well. Thanks for your time and help.
The hard drive was replaced and the operating system reinstalled so it’s not software related problem. The laptop still plays audio, data, DVD disks intermittently and it tells me that most likely the IDE controller on the motherboard is fine. I think the DVD/CD-RW drive itself is failing. I doubt the problem is related to the hard drive replacement, it’s just a coincidence. Here’s a Satellite 1800 disassembly guide, just in case if you need it in the future.

TOSHIBA SATELLITE LAPTOP Owners: TOO many of us have problems with and complaints about the junky MAT.SHIT.A DVD/RW Drives. My A105-S4074 is less than THREE years old, but the burner only worked for A FEW MONTHS. I had to purchase an external burner because Toshiba wanted to charge TOO much to do the replacement. It seems we should somehow circulate a petition then CONFRONT Toshiba. Perhaps they’ll issue a recall to either REPLACE the burners or reimburse costs to those persons who already replaced theirs. OR, maybe we could get help and file a Class-Action Lawsuit. Are there any Attorneys amongst us who would volunteer Pro Bono legal representation? Meanwhile, if someone could PLEASE recommend a decent INTERNAL burner for my A105-S4074, I have someone who would install it for me. I have heard that the LITE-ON Model DS-8A2S A01-OEM (SATA) might work (if I can find one!) THANK YOU, LAPTOP FREAK. We appreciate this forum where we can VENT our frustrations about our Toshiba burner problems!!!

I had a missing CD/DVD drive from ‘My Computer’ and couldn’t burn cds or watch dvds, but I was still able to play games that required the cd. After much freaking out and posting on every website imaginable, I called Toshiba. In my case it was a software issue, they were able to talk me thru what to do.
1) go to http://support.toshiba.com
Once the DOS prompt pops up, you’ll have to “press any key” to start and “press any key” to exit
2) Where the search box is, click ‘Express View’
3) Type in this ID “98080671” and change the drop down menu to “Support Bulletin”
4) Click the search button!
5) “CD / DVD drive missing from ‘My Computer’ (Windows Explorer)” should pop up
6) *note if this will work with your Toshiba model* Follow on-screen directions to download “Toshiba Upper/Lower Limit Repair Tool (RmvFltrs.exe).”
7) After saving, unzip, and run! (it’ll look like the old DOS prompt)
9) Restart laptop
10) Check ‘My Computer’ – hallelujah ! it’s there!
If it’s not there after this, then the tech guy told me that it was a hardware issue, and I’d have to bring it in.
Hope this helps!!

I have a Lenovo internal laptop cd-rw drive. I also own a USB to IDE cable adapters for 2.5 and 3.5. My issue is that I ordered the internal laptop drive to connect with these adapters via usb. Little did I know that this would not work with my adapters. It takes a smaller connection as you must know already. I pulled up the web page that I ordered from and it said that the connection is a ATAPI connection. I’ve Googled the hell out of this to find some sort of adapter cable for internal cd-r laptop drives with no luck. Is there a cable of this nature or am I just chasing my own tail here?
Thanks,
Aaron

Hi
Toshiba P25 Media Center
The HDD died so i ordered a new one and installed it and used the repair disk to reset to factory standard. Everything is working great except surprise surprise the DVD player.
The laptop will play CDs perfectly. When i try to play DVDs i get a codec error both in WMP and WMC. I downloaded and installed VLC and it played every DVD i tossed in without a problem.
I think it could be an issue with the DVD RAM drivers and the DVD drivers. Im pretty sure there is a toggle somewhere for it. But i cant find it anywhere. Any ideas?

My Toshiba Satellite a105-s2716 reads and writes CDs okay; reads DVDs okay but no longer reads DVDR disks as having available space to record. Now, I’m not sure how to make back-up diskettes or copy my large files to DVD. Seems that the previous functionality to burn DVDs is gone (either through Roxio or other media management). Is there a setting I’m overlooking or program to run? Or, is it a DVD drive problem?

Hi, I think I have a fairly simple question. I have a MPC Transport T2100 laptop with a CD-RW/DVD drive but no DVD burner. I want to buy a new drive to burn DVD’s. My question is: do I need to buy a MPC brand drive or can any old drive work(like HP, Dell, Sony, etc)? Are they all the same(have the same hook-up) or does it depend on the brand?
Thanks for any help!

I have a Toshiba Satellite A35, and just like the other people that have posted my DVD/CD-R combo drive will play DVD’s but will not read regular cd’s or burn any cd’s. I have some important software I need to install onto my computer for work and I cant get the drive to read the cd. Is the only answer that my drive has failed and I need a new one or is there a solution that is still out there?

I have been following the thread hoping I could find answer to my laptop problems. So far, everything I read have been very helpful.
Here is my problem with my DVD/CD-RW. My laptop is A75 Toshiba Satellite. The DVD/CD-RW can read original CDs, DVD, and does burn CD with albeit Nero would say it failed, the data accessed from other machine seems ok. It can also burn audio CD. The problem however, the drive won’t read any burned CD-R even those CD-Rs burned from its own drive.

my toshiba satellite 4090dvd/cd will not download an internet server from a disk. i have tried aol and netzero. the little disk symbol comes on the screen with the arrow for a couple of minutes then disappears. i finally found a place in the laptop menus where i could down load several servers from the laptop and got netzero downloaded, but i need aol and it wasnt on the list of servers. i am on dial up and down loading from the net is impossibly slow. it plays a dvd movie, just will not download.

Sian Jones,
Here’s a list of CD-RW/DVD drive compatible with Satellite 1415.
Part numbers: P000351760, P000352490, P000355040, P000371010. Search on the Internet by the part number and find witch one is affordable for you.

Can anyone recommend a (inexpensive?) DVDRW drive for a 1415-S105 which will not produce an IDE #1 error?

Dave LG,
Sounds like a bad drive. I think you’ll have to replace the drive.

no working dvd rom /cd/r/rw
toshiba 1415 s105
dvd rom cd/r/rw drive sits there with flashing yellow led as soon as I power up
can boot with install disks and nothing happens, still blinks and is set to boot from dvd/cd 1st
one time it worked for a bit with a system restore point change but then failed after a couple of boot ups.
now I really need it to work cause I have a need dll to load HAL error on boot up no xp working.
I’m beginning to think I need a new drive.
when pc would boot I got something about an i/o error with the dvd drive. Trouble shooting produced nothing and the remove and installed failed also.
disgusted in Wa.

I have a Toshiba SatA45-S150 with combo drive. Last fall noticed couldn’t read it’s own burned CD’s, but works fine in other drives including the ext USB Dvd burner. Cleaning lens+uninstalling the device and reinstall at bootup made it work again. Now same problem. It’s an SD-R2412 and machine is 3.5 year old. Will read DVD’s and other disks burned on other machines. Do you think it’s a failed combo drive? Replacement is $169 and wondering if worth it.Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I have a Toshiba Satellite A105, and I was taking a CD out of my CD/DVD-ROM drive, and i accidentally pulled the whole tray out, including the little ribbon (sorry, I dont know the technical term)that attaches to it. I pushed it back in and eventually got the ribbon back in, but when i turned the laptop on, the tray wouldnt come out, and it is locked in there. I dont know if the ribbon came out or what, but nevertheless, it doesnt work anymore. I need some advice on whether I will need to disassemble the laptop or if there is an easier way. Any help is appreciated. Thank you

i too am upset at toshiba. (5005-s504 owner here)short and sweet…
same trouble.
cd dvd rom died.
didnt care. no big deal. if i needed to load anything i’d use an external one.
then i lost the OS…oh crap…now what.
the cd dvd drives sell for $180 to $290 US…not a chance in hell will i take a chance with a defunct drive for that price.
what to do? EBAY! found one. got it for $19+10 shipping! YAHOO!
Didnt work. should have known.
same issues…trying to read…trying to read…wiiirrrrrrr. thunk. cachunk. wiiirrrrrrr. thunk. cachunk. wiiirrrrrrr. thunk. cachunk.
has anyone EVER figured out or came forward to explain what in Gods name is wrong with these drives? it’s happening to EVERYONE…or happened to everyone. im one of the last who wont throw the damn thing away eventhough ive gone through 2 pc’s since…i refuse to let it win…lol
Jane Vasarhelyi Says: “There is one company that offers a Panasonic replacement for $49 but that sounds too good to be true (also, there is NO warranty, not even 90 days).”
HELL! who are they? ill try it and drop $50!!!

Hi, i’ve found your website very helpful in solving some problems i had. I have one very big problem however with (i think it’s) my DVD drive on my Toshiba Satellite A45 (about 3.5 years old). Everytime i start my laptop it makes a grinding/whining noise which i think is either coming from the hard drive or the DVD drive. Also whenever the laptop is running and I tilt it a little, it makes the noise as well. Do you know what might be causing this and if there is anything i can replace to fix it? I appreciate your reply
