My notebook works fine in most wireless environments but it freezes when I use wireless connection at home

I have a problem with my Latitude D500 notebook. It works fine in most wireless environments but my own at home. It may work for 1 minute or 15 – then it freezes, requiring a force quit.
Using Netgear WGT624 v3 wireless router and Netgear WG511T adapter. Have installed latest software.
Also, after it freezes, the Latitude can’t load any browser when connected to the router by Ethernet cable.

The notebook works fine in most wireless environments, so I assume there is nothing wrong with the wireless adapter or notebook itself. You installed the latest software, but did you check if there is a firmware upgrade for the router? My friend had a similar problem with his notebook and we resolved the problem by upgrading the wireless router to the latest firmware.

I have a HP Compaq Presario V3000. My problem is that I cannot use the wireless LAN without plugging in the electric supply (battery is still 100% charged). With the electric plugged in, the wireless works just fine. So I don’t think there is hardware problem. It seems more like a battery drain issue, i.e. not enough power to drive the wireless transeiver.

    Adam,
That’s a really weird problem, never heard of it before. Check the BIOS version installed on your notebook, make sure you have the latest version and upgrade it if needed. It might help.

I’m having a similar problem as the original poster, except that as of tonight, my wireless router won’t connect at all, the wireless light stays off. Since I can’t connect using the router, how can I go about getting the firmware upgrade? Can I download via another connection and upload to the router?

    Thanks!

    cc,
You can download the firmware upgrade file via another connection and then access the router via an Ethernet cable, it should be explained in the router’s manual. Of course I assume there is nothing wrong with the router and you can connect it using via the cable. In the router’s menu should be a place where you can navigate to the saved firmware upgrade file (on the computer) and upgrade the firmware.

I’m Using a Toshiba M45 with Windows XP and a netgear router run by Intel Proset. Suddenly I am unable to get through in the internet from my home although everything works in other locations. The hard wired connection to the router works but the wireless gets blocked just as a page from the internet is about to come in. Other routers from nearby appartments that I used to be able to access are blocked in the same way. All the Intel Proset diag tests say everything is fine. What is going on? Is some radio source zaping me?

More on the above. I found an external(USB) ethernet card and got a driver for it. That works with my cable modem and wireless router. An older laptop with a PCM slot wireless card also works so the problem can’t be with the modem/router combination. As previously noted the built-in card works on other floors of the building where it picks up other routers. So, if the problem isn’t in the modem/router and it isn’t in the laptop, where is it?

I have spent hours updating drivers. It is making me nuts.

Please help me; I search all over the web but cannot find anything like my problem.

My laptop connects wirelessly to the router at my house. This is the only place that it will connect wirelessly. If I take it to my boyfriend’s house, it won’t connect (displays “Local only” connection), yet his sister’s laptop was connected wirelessly. I assumed it had something to do with their router and let it go.

However, I stayed a weekend at my aunt’s house and brought my laptop along with me. My brother had his, which is exactly the same model as mine: Toshiba Satellite A215-S7422. As I tried to connect to hers, it always does the same thing (local only) and his connected right away, so I realized it is a problem with my laptop.

So I don’t think the problem is with my built-in wireless since it does recognize signals and I can get on at my house. Do you think I have to get my laptop repaired or is it maybe a setting? Oh also, I updated the drivers for the wireless lan so I doubt that has something to do with it.

    Thanks for reading,
    Deanne.

I think your problem is related to the settings on your computer and wireless router. Did you set up the wireless network yourself or somebody helped you?
Here’s my guess. I think in your boyfriend’s and aunt’s house the wireless router has DHCP server service enabled and their computers are set to get the IP address automatically. However, your wireless router has DHCP server service disabled and the IP address had been set manually.
When your computers sees their routers, it can connect to the routers but it cannot connect to the internet because the default gateway has a different IP address.

In order to connect to the Internet through their routers, TCP/IP settings on your laptop has to match settings on their routers.

That is probably it. You see I had to put in my IP manually for ZSNES to work on my laptop for my router. I never realized that this could be interfering with my ability to have access to other routers. I will test this out and get back to you.

    Thanks,
    Deanne

    Here’s the news.
I reset my IP address to be obtained automatically. This resulted in still not being able to connect to someone else’s router, but I could no longer connect to my own. I don’t know if my computer just had a problem with obtaining an IP but either way the only thing I could do to fix it was plug it in to my router and then I could access internet. So now it can connect wirelessly to my home router again.

But it’s set to obtain an IP automatically and DHCP enabled now so we’ll have to see if it works anywhere else.

I have a Lenovo T61. Love it. However recently my wireless connections just turn off, and I can diagnose the issue and it says that the wireless is turned off and gives me an option to rectify it. Which it never fails but is seemingly a pain in the butt. I must also say that I am networked at home with my Home PC being the main with a wireless and then I connect etc. I also have the Lexmark wireless printer. (Dont ever buy one of those – Thats another story). I havent made any modifications (or at least that I know of). Do you have any suggestions?
