My Dell Inspiron notebook stopped charging when I would plug in the charger
My Dell Inspiron 1100 notebook stopped charging when I would plug in the charger. Both when it was on and off. I normally could get it to charge by moving the position of the cord as it was plugged into the back of the computer. It got progressively harder to make it charge until just recently it stopped charging at all. The charger itself, not the computer, started beeping when it was plugged into a power source and my computer is dead with no way to get any charge into the battery or run it with the AC power.
Maybe you have a broken or loose power jack, as it explained in this post? I think you’ll have to take it apart and take a closer look at the power jack on the motherboard. Replace or resolder the jack if needed.
By the way, it’s possible that you have a broken wire inside the power cord close to the power plug. Find a known good power adapter and test the laptop. If you still experience the same problem, most likely that’s a problem with the power jack.

Dell Insipiron 1420… has a strange problem.. It came with PA 12 65 Watt Adapter… one fine day for no reason at all It stopped charging from PA 12, got a new PA 12 No result, Gave it to dell service center verdict was motherboard faulty repair cost about 300 USD. gave it to local repair man by chance he didn’t had PA 12 instead used PA 10 90 watt adapter… worked fine with it… back to PA 12 still dead with PA 12… My question is why it works with PA 10 and how long till it finally stops working with PA 10 too… should i get the MB changed…??

My Dell Inspirion notebook 8500 is not under warranty and I don’t know what to do. When I plugged it into the outlet on the wall the green light on the base of the AC adapter would come on but when I plugged it into the back of the laptop the light would go off and it wouldn’t charge at all. Dell refuse to help me and I don’t have a lot of money. What can I do?

Whenever I Plug I My Laptop to Charge (Either Windows is Running or the Laptop is in Shutdown Mode) The laptop charges for some second and then runs on battery for a few seconds. That’s why the charging has been very slow. I have just replaced my AC adapter and power cord wit a new original one. I use Compaq M 2254 AU Laptop. I just wanted to know whether I need to change my Battery or not.

My laptop stopped turning on a few months ago, it would turn off by itself and then stopped recognizing the hard drive and then never turned on again, I know its not the adapter because i borrowed a newer HP afterwards and powered it with my adapter.
So I tried replacing the DC power jack by removing it and soldering another one, and I accidentally broke a piece that holds the DC power jack to the board apparently I did not loosen up the joints and tried forcing the DC jack out. I then purchased a used mother board on eBay which the seller claims to not boot up, I figured thats fine as long as it gets power.
I just swapped out my motherboard with it and it doesn’t turn on either. I have plugged the power adapter to it and nothing, I have removed the battery and plugged it in again and nothing, So I put my ear to the bottom of the laptop while its plugged in and I hear a faint clock ticking inside. I want to know if you guys can repair my laptop as I think there is still hope for it.
HP Compaq NX6110
its going to be 3 years in May since I purchased it NEW.
by the way when I opened up the laptop the first time to replace the DC power and had to remove the fan and heat sink attached to it, there was a thick layer of hair, dust and lint on the side vent of the case. It was bad, I’m thinking thats why it died..I don’t know…just a guess. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a problem with my Dell 505 computer.
The power adapter seems not working correctly.
I have checked with other (working adapter) and it seems work fine.
The problem: LED is on, but does not charge and/or does not supply voltage.
I have checked the voltage on pins: it is about 20V as it supposed to be between ground and active. Interestingly, it seems drop to about 5V if I connect it to the motherboard (checked with open computer, screen and keyboard removed). The resistance between center pin and the ground is about 8kOhm.
Does anybody knows the right values for voltage and impedance?
How can I fix the adapter? (except obvious solution to buy a new adapter)
Thank you.

I just had this very problem with my Dell Inspirion notebook. Luckily it is still under warranty because when I plugged it into the outlet on the wall the green light on the base of the AC adapter would come on but when I plugged it into the back of the laptop the light would go off and it wouldn’t charge at all. I called Dell about this problem and they had said that the motherboard probably went bad and their sending a technician out in a couple of days to replace it.

I have a Dell Lattitude, the issue is that the charger is okay, however, when I plug it into the computer the computer will still not start up. I removed the battery to and plugged it in, and it still will not start up. Can you tell me what it might be?

“I am having a power problem with my Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop. I have tried 3 different AC adapters and changed out the power jack on the mobo itself, but I still have a problem. It says I have a 70W AC adapter instead of a 90W (which isn’t true)so it runs in battery optimized mode which slows the CPU from 1.8 GHZ to about 700 MHZ and darkens the screen and all that jazz.”

Have you fixed this problem yet because I am having the same problem?

But if I let the batteries charge (which takes about 3 days now) and unplug the ac adapter the system runs just fine. My batteries aren’t what they used to be and only last a few minutes. Do think it could be my DC charging board causing the power problem or is it my MOBO. I also tried different batteries from a friends 8200 that work fine, but it didn’t help. I updated the bios and set the power options to always on. I also download the CPU speedstep fix, but nothing is working. The CPU runs around 700 MHZ as long as the AC adapter is plugged in.

Victor,
If you cannot remove the broken piece then you’ll have to replace the power jack – the part you plug the adapter in. It’s not easy because you’ll have to take the whole laptop apart, remove the motherboard and replace/resolder the power jack.

my laptop fell while charging. I picked up my laptop and the charger was broke in half but a little a piece was still stuck in the laptop and i cannot get the piece out and i cannot charge my laptop due to the piece of the charger still in the laptop. What do I do?

Ravindra,
There is no simple solution for this problem. Try minimizing the notebook. Remove all devices – battery, DVD drive, wireless card, hard drive, etc… and test the laptop again. Reseat the memory module or swap it with a known good one. If you have two memory modules installed remove them one by one and test the notebook with each memory stick.
If the problem is gone, start assembling the notebook piece by piece and test after each installed device. This way you can find a faulty part.
If you disassembled the laptop and it still beeps even with a good memory module, it’s possible you a have a problem with the motherboard.

Hi My name is Ravi, I have a Sony Viao Laptop bought in Australia. When I came back to india it was working fine, But one day I switched on my laptop and it started and shutdown and again started and went down. Now whenever I try to turn on the laptop the screen but beeps and goes off the battery lights also light up and then none. The battery charges but the Machine doesnt boot its just a beep. I am not certain what is wrong is it a power issue, whether there was a fluctuation or anything and how can it be resolved

Hey Rea Maor,
I’ve never worked with LC laptops so it’ll be just a guess. Usually it’s not enough to remove screws from the bottom. Most likely there are some screws under the keyboard too and before you can split the laptop case you have to lift up the keyboard and remove all screws. Here’s an example for removing the keyboard on a Toshiba Satellite A55 laptop, it might be similar to your laptop. Do you have a pice of plastic above the keyboard? If yes, try lifting it up and then you can remove the keyboard.
BTW, if you cannot find a new power jack for your computer check out this broken power jack workaround guide, it might be handy.
