I’ve weird problem with my battery. 100% to about 40% the battery discharging normally then suddenly from 40% it drop directly to 2%.

I’ve weird problem with my battery (Acer Aspire 5562WXMi).
When I use only on battery, from 100% to about 40% the battery discharging normally (last about 1 hour) then suddenly from 40% it drop directly to 2%.
When I plug the AC cord, it won’t directly charge (the charge LED is still not on). After 10 to 20 minutes it then starts to charge the battery (the indicator say that it can be charged to 100%).
If I turn-off the laptop and then charge the battery, it won’t also directly charge but the delay is much shorter (maybe just about 1-2 minutes).
Is this the sign of a bad battery (when hot it can’t be charged?) or maybe a bad AC adapter (not enough power to charge the battery when the laptop is turned on?)
Note that this symptom is always repeating when I use the laptop.

From the first part of your complaint description I can see that you have a bad battery. I’ve seen this battery related problem many times before. The percentage might vary, but the process of discharging is the same – the battery discharges fine until some point and then the remaining charge suddenly drops to the minimum. You’ll have to replace the battery.
I’m not sure about the second part. Probably it’s a battery related problem too. Just in case check if there is a newer version of BIOS available for your laptop. If you find one, upgrade the BIOS.

    Great, thanks for the response.
I’ll buy a new battery for it (or try to fix it).

I noticed that someone here (in my city) can replace some bad cells in the battery (so may not need to buy a new one if not all the cells in the battery-pack are bad). Do you think that this is a good idea?

BTW, I also found a BIOS update for my laptop too (just searched in Acer site). But need to have a good battery first because the updater refuses to flash the BIOS if I only use AC power (I think this is for maximum safety in case of AC power failure when flashing).

    regards,

I have a dell Inspiron 5160 and a bunch of F0590 A01 KEE batteries. I want to charge them without using my laptop to do so.

    Do you have any ideas?

I could even purchase a stripped down Inspiron 1100 or something and just use it as a charger.

I have a Toshiba A45-S120 running Win XP Home. For about 3 months I would receive erratic readings from the battery power indicator. When it was plugged in it would be fine and quickly rise to 100% but when not plugged in the meter would drop fast and occasionally fluctuate up and down. One second it would read 80% 2 hours remaining, then it would say 20% and then it would give a strange reading like 60% 4 hours remaining.
This went on for about 3 months. Now the laptop won’t boot. No lights flash. I’m sure the battery is dead but shouldn’t I be able to boot the laptop using AC power?

    Brian,
Remove the battery and plug the AC adapter. If you still get no LED activity, then either the adapter is bad or you have a dead motherboard.
