When I move the laptop or shake the bottom a bit it shut down
My laptop seems to be experiences cooling fan gunk build up and that is one reason it may shut down unexpectedly.
BUT, in addition..when I move the laptop or shake the bottom a bit it seems to also shut down. Keep in mind it is not an adapter issue because the battery still has anywhere from 50-99% power remaining.
I will admit the battery isn’t so great and should be replaced. But just..moving it around. Would that be enough to create a shut down? Or is this too related to over heating?
I did at one point take a peek at the lap top too, I put it back together with maybe one or two tiny screws missing. This could also perhaps add to the dilemma.
First of all, remove the battery and test the laptop with the AC adapter. Does the laptop still shut down if you move it or shake the bottom when the battery is unplugged? If it does, the problem is not related to the battery or to the connection between the battery and motherboard. Something else is going on inside the case.
Make sure the memory is seated correctly and is making a good connection with the motherboard. Try reconnecting the memory module and test the laptop again.
Finally, minimize the laptop as much as you can. Remove battery, hard drive, DVD drive, wireless card, maybe even disconnect the keyboard and unplug the LCD screen. In short, take it apart to barebone system and leave only motherboard, CPU and memory. Test the system with the AC adapter and then with battery. Does it still shut down when moved? If yes, you can have a motherboard related problem, probably there is a bad contact somewhere on the motherboard.
By the way, what laptop do you have? What model?

Alright, I did as requested for your first suggestion. I want to leave it at that, since when I did shake the lap top without the battery, it did not shut down. (And believe me, I gave it a nice long good shake.)
I would assume then that the connection between motherboard and battery is partly where the problem lies?
As for lap top type and model. I have an HP Pavilion.
dv1000
Nothing too fancy. I got it some odd years ago. Three to four years.

Sounds like it, otherwise the laptop would shut down running from AC power without battery installed. Not sure if you can fix it. Make sure contacts are clean.

Hi, so I tried a few of the ideas a while back. School and personal life kept me from giving you a proper response.
On top of that, I could never take apart the darn thing like suggested way back when. One screw lost it’s “grip”.
It was frustrating since all the other screws easily came off.
Right now….the lap top has a bigger problem similar to what you mentioned. Now the port refuses all power from the adapter.
It will show the small battery charge symbol. But only in a flashing fashion, which is new. And if I try to turn it on, it makes a strange buzzing sound (as if the comp is trying to get the AC Power but the connection is too weak)
Is there any hope in making this comp work again? Last time a school issued lap top (of very poor quality) had a similar issue, and the repair techs basically told me they cannot repair something as simple as a port and would rather charge me the price of a new lap top to get a new mother board.
Of course, they used double talk to make it sound less irritating. But I hate dishonest double talk.

Hey, Im not sure exactly where to ask a question, so I hope this is the right place. I have an IBM Thinkpad, and it worked great for a while, but all of a sudden one day, the screen just froze, and got all blurry and disoriented, then just stayed frozen. I would then shut it down and try it again numerous times and I had varrying results, but they all ended the same way, with the blurry frozen screen. Some times i can get to my desktop before it freezes up again, and sometimes, I will just turn it on and nothing comes up. Ive had computers freeze up before, but never with this blurry disoriented thing that happens every time with my laptop. Ive pretty much given up on trying things, im hoping its not a virus. Any help would be great, if you have any idea what is going on. thanks

I have a problem with the lid latch on my Acer aspire 5102WLMi. When I slide the lid latch to the right to open the lid it stays there. It doesn’t slide back to the center/left. It’s loose. The same happens when I close it. The lid latch doesn’t lock, I have to slide it to the left in order to lock it. Is there anyway I can fix it?

Ayame,
If you want to find out what is wrong with the lid latch, you’ll have to open up the display panel.
Here’s my guess. The lid latch has a spring, witch slides the latch back after you release it. Most likely this spring was dislocated somehow and you can fix the latch if you put the spring back in place.
I’ve seen this problem before on some Toshiba and IBM laptops.

My roommate have a HP laptop that won’t turn on at all. She was using her laptop Saturday and put it away for a trip, when she got to the hotel and tried turning on the laptop but it wouldn’t come on even with the power cord attached. The laptop is about 2 years ago, can someone tell me what could be wrong, she in a small town in Iowa and she really needs to see if there is anything she can do it get it working.
Thanks,

I have a Dell D610 that I purchased used about 9 months ago. Just recently, it didn’t recognize the wireless adapter. And then it froze up. It has since then, been alternately not recognizing wireless and freezing up. At first, it would freeze up every time I lifted the laptop from a surface, now it seems to do it whenever the wireless adapter is functioning. I started out with a system restore (though maybe not to an early enough date…) and a virus scan. Neither yielded any relief. I opened up the little door to the wireless card and poked around at it a bit, which works until the laptop is moved or shut down. I reseated the hard drive (that is, if reseated means “took it out and stuck it back in”) it helped for a bit. At my most functional moments, it would work fine for a few hours before the wireless would stop working. Now, one or the other fails within seconds of starting up the computer. I have started it in safe mode to do a virus scan, and it seems to work smoothly in safe mode. I did semi-open it up (it has a few stripped screws, so I couldn’t pop it open all the way) and it looks sort of dusty inside. could that be it? I have gone between that and “loose connections,” “bad wireless card” and “super stealthy virus” in my mind and can’t seem to settle on the problem because there seems to be no rhyme or reason to the problem. Prior to this utter failure, I had downloaded a few games which seemed to give the computer trouble. I take the thing with me everywhere- all over the house. When I take it out, it goes in an uber-insulated bag, and I never leave it in a cold or hot vehicle. It was dropped about 6 months ago, but the hard drive was replaced and has worked beautifully since then. Until now. any ideas for me, besides “junk the thing and start over?”

I have a Toshiba Satellite notebook….(I’ve got this 2-3 years already)
So annoying… my computer shut itself down all the time… sometime work for hours and then shut down, but most of the time.. will shut itself down every 15 minutes.. and will go to the blue screen… saying so many different warning….
and also.. when I move my computer.. it would shut down itself too… both with and without the adaptor….
I did try to do recovery to my computer many times… most of the time.. some files missing.. but this last time.. was complete with no problem…
I really have no idea about what happened.. and how can I fix it.. if you have any idea please help me..
PS: I use the fan to cool my notebook all the time.. and put my computer in a cooling place or table.. that air flow all the time.. and very stable surface.. but it still happen..
(sorry for my broken English)

Seems as if I have some sort of loose connection. While I’m on my laptop, if I move it or even slightly press up under the left side (near the cd rom drive) the screen will go off. Seems as if the computer is still running but if it decides to come back up (like if I press under the left side) it will start up with the beginning dell screen again, but won’t fully boot up. I can get the laptop to work if not pressing on that left side area (if I sit a certain way). No problems seem to be with the screen or anything else that I can tell. Any ideas of what this could be and if it would be a costly fix?? Any help would be great!

Jen,
Could be loose connection between one of the memory modules and motherboard. Try reconnecting both memory modules first.
Also, test your laptop with each memory module separately. It’s possible the memory is fine but one of the memory slots is failing.

Hi,I have a hp540 laptop. Since past 4-5 months it’s showing a coloured line on the bottom of the screen.
however the laptop was working ok. But since a couple of weeks it has been showing other problems.Sometimes it turns off by itself after 5-10 minutes of logging in even though it is charged. sometimes the buildin mouse stops working. Removing the battery and putting it again fixes the problem temporarily and then again the problems start appearing. Its dvd drive is also not working very properly. It plays cds but not some of the dvds’.
PLEASE HELP MEE!!!!!!!
Thank you in advance!!

TENGO,
I think your laptop has hard drive protection installed. When you shake the laptop, it detects the movement and hard drive head goes into parked position and it stops working for a while.
Find the hard drive monitoring utility in the control panel and disable it or make less sensitive. Does it help?

I have a Neo Empriva 572SVB running Windows Vista Ultimate. A few weeks ago whenever I click to open a folder the computer tries to send the folder to the recycle bin istead of opening it. This happens with the touchpad and also if I connect a mouse.
Thinking I had a virus, I clean installed Vista, formatting my drive from the installation disk. I finished install and after a short time, the problem begins again.
I have done 3 clean installs but the problem keeps coming back.
Help!!
