Laptop freezes when I am using wireless connection

I have an HP Pavilion dv6000 that came with Vista. I am having problems with it freezing literally “every 6 minutes” when I’m using wireless….this is NOT an issue at all if I have the Ethernet plugged in directly from the DSL modem. I have a Linksys router, and I installed the latest firmware. I don’t know if this is an HP problem, a Vista issue, or if I simply have a bad wireless card. Anyone else experiencing this? (I’ve had this problem both with the laptop plugged in and just on the battery).

Thank you in advance for any help!

Sounds like this one will be a tough one because I don’t know any utility for testing the wireless card. In most cases to find out if your problem is related to the wireless card is replacing it with another good working wireless card.
Here’s what you can try. Probably you have original HP software load and it has a lot of programs running on the background, you can see them in the notification area of the task bar (lower right corner). Try turning off these programs one by one and see if it makes any difference. It’s possible that you laptop freezes because of some kind of software conflict.
Try reloading your laptop from scratch. Backup all personal files and run the restore (recovery) CDs or DVDs.
Sounds like you installed the latest firmware for the router but did you check if you have the latest BIOS installed on your laptop? Sometimes these kind of issue can be fixed with upgrading the BIOS.

    james,
Why did you replace the motherboard? What was wrong with the laptop?
Have you tried reinstalling the operating system from scratch?

I have the same problem with my HP ze4610us. The laptop will freeze only when on battery power and while using the wireless card. Here is what I have tried unsuccessfully so far:

Laptop freezes on internet when on battery power

freezes after only a few seconds with orinoco 802.11 a/b/g ComboCard Gold driver 3.1.2.19

freezes after 5-25 minutes with 3d reach Netopia 802.11b

Have dumped HD, have deleted driver, tried other card that works, have tried network card in powersave, have tried netword card on 10mw vs. 100mw
There are no other drivers online for either card

    Have disabled Windows wireless configuration

Have not updated BIOS b/c have the most current BIOS KAM 1.60

Ctrl+Alt+Delete–nothing happens; can only hard reboot by holding down power button

would change IRQ, but every install of OS block chaning IRQ

100% chance of freeze withing only seconds on ebay but maybe only minutes on google.com; 100% freeze on facebook, slightly longer

This is with only one PCMCIA slot used (the card) and no USB or DVD/CD
When using optical device and PCMCIA card removed on battery power–does not freeze

    works 100% on a/c

    HP ze4610us Laptop
    Windows XP SP2
1.8Ghz (this is the real number, but changes when I go to My Computer–Properties)
    448MB of RAM
    Mobile AMD Athlon XP2500+

Really hope someone can figure this out.

Here’s a strange one. My laptop runs fine when it’s on the school’s wireless connection. When I take it off campus, to a coffee shop or something, I get this strange error. It will freeze and hang for several minutes. If I wait, it will eventually start back up. The program that appears to be frozen is Windows Explorer. I can still Alt-tab through applications, and I can browse the web, but if I try to open a file, save-as, or anything else that causes Windows Explorer to launch, it hangs (doing something? Virus scan? Connection to a mapped drive on the far-away school network? I don’t know.) And it hangs for several minutes.

I can fix it every time, if I manually flip off the wireless. There’s a little switch on my IBM Lenovo that lets me disable the wireless. If I do that, all the waiting applications process immediately. (If I’m waiting for a save-as window that’s just a grey box, it will come up with files names and folders the second I flip off the wireless switch.)

But when I’m on campus, it’s fine and normal all the time. And another laptop on campus (at least one other) has the same problem.

    Ideas?
    Thanks!
    Warren

I have a Toshiba Satellite, and whenever I have the wireless switch turned “on” my computer gives me the “blue screen of death” after a matter of minutes. When I have the wireless connection turned “off” (there is a switch on the side of the computer that turns it on/off), I never have any problems. What’s going on here?

Have a new question for you. My laptop stopped recognizing my at home wireless network for some reason. And it won’t connect to any wireless connections around me either. not sure what happend. I have a linksys router and my laptop uses intel pro/wireless 2200bg network connections. Never had a problem but it just quit one day. It says that the driver is working fine but something is wrong because it doesn’t work anymore.

    Any suggestions

I’ve been having a problem with my internet connection. My wifi works just fine when my laptop is plugged into a power source, but as soon as I unplug it, webpages stop loading and I get a bunch of “page cannot be displayed” messages, even though my wifi still says it is connected to the internet and the signal is “very good”.
i’ve tried changing the battery settings because I thought maybe it was acting up because it was on power save mode or something, but I haven’t gotten it to work and I’ve tried it on everyh battery setting. Am I just going to have to keep my laptop plugged in at all times??!?!

i also have a problem concerning my wireless switch. i have a toshiba L300, and sometimes when i turn off the wireless switch on the front, the whole system becomes unresponsive. i have to hold the power button to reset it. it has done this six or seven times. when i reset, it gives me a list of options-start windows normally, safe mode, safe mode(networking), which I’m in right now, and safe mode(command prompt). i went to the toshiba website and downloaded wireless lan drivers or something. will have to wait and see if this happens again. any help will be appreciated.

I have a similar problem…i have a Toshiba P205D laptop and now and then it just freezes up with vertical white lines across the screen…The processor fan stops and the computer has to have the battery quickly removed and placed back in to get it to reboot…Nothing else has started it up again unless you take away all power sorces for a split second and then reboot…What could cause this?

I have updated bios driver, wireless lan driver from tosibha website to no avail. Again i cannot figure out if its vista, toshiba or at this stage intel. Or more than likely the fact that the thre might not be compatable.

I have a HP DV2000 with Windows Vista. It works great, so long as no internet connection of any kind is connected to the laptop. Once a connection is made, either through a wireless connection or through ethernet, I have about 1 or 2 minutes of internet surfing until the laptop freezes and I have to hold down the power button to turn it off. I don’t know what to do now. I’ve already flushed DNS registry and uninstalled interface ipv4 and reinstalled it. Any ideas anybody?

You know it seems that a lot of people are having this freezing of their laptops when ever they go online. I too am having this problem and it seems that there is no one able to provide an answer on why this problem is so wide spread. Even as I type now my computer is freezing and it is annoying. I have done everything including restoring my computer from scratch and still the same problem if anybody can help or let us know what they did to correct the same problem please let us know. Thanks

I found that the Wireless Zero Configuration was locking up my machine. The process would keeep scanning for the “primary” network when I was roaming about. If it found a network on the same channel it would attempt to reroute itself to that network. What I would do is when starting up is open up the task manager from the task bar and stop the process.

    Hi!

My problem is with SOny Vaio VGN-A115M. The laptop ist 5 years old. Last week it flashed blue screen and turned itself down. Then it restarted itself, but unsuccessfully. I thought, it could be a virus and switched WLAN off. The laptop restarted and worked without problems. I scanned it on viruses, found none and swiched WLAN back on. Blue screen flash and down. I reformatted the drive and reinstalled the original settings. Then I updated the BIOS, drivers and all the other updates available. Via Ethernet – no problem. As soon as I switched WLAN on, blue screen flash and down.
I can’t find anywhere the instructions for taking apart and cleaning the laptop (could be dust?)or where is the WLAN card there (maybe I could replace it?) Please help!!!

another of a myriad of wireless/freeze queries … I have an older laptop (for emergencies). It is an IBM Thinkpad T20 and it has been very reliable.

I recently went to a wireless router at the house and decided it would be nice to be able to use the laptop from the couch for fantasy football on Sundays. Everything has installed and works fine (mostly), I can surf with no problems when connected to the docking station (hardwired to the router) and I can surf from the couch (wirelessly).

However, when I attempt to access my fantasy football page via wireless the system locks up – no mouse, no HD running, not able to ctrl+alt+del – nothing. My only respnse is to do a hard shutdown.

NFL.com has touted their ‘upgrades’ this year, but I have yet to speak with anyone who is happy with their site. Is this an ‘applet’ that I am missing (it does fine when docked) or is it a security issue or maybe memory …

    OS: XP Pro SP3 w/IE 8, 512 MB RAM, D-Link DWL-G630 cardbus adapter and D-Link DI-624 router.

Thanx so much for any assistance.
