Only the top 1/3 of the laptop screen work
I just bought an older laptop, a Dell Inspiron 5100, from a friend and about a month later, i came back to find that only the top 1/3 of the screen work. The bottom 2/3 is gray with vertical lines. i put the start menu on the side and it makes the bad part turn a light color of gray. Is there anyway to fix this?
I think this is the screen problem, but… Try reconnecting the video cable, it’s possible that the video cable is not making a good connection with the motherboard. Lift up the keyboard as it shown in the service manual for Inspiron 5100, unplug the video cable from the motherboard and then plug it back in.
If reconnecting the cable will not help, you can try replacing the cable. There is a chance and it shouldn’t be very expensive.
Finally, replace the LCD screen. In my opinion, this problem is related to the LCD screen.

I will be sure to try that, I had a friend run tests and nothing seemed to be wrong. I hooked up an external and it worked fine. Its just that the bottom 2/3 is grey. I can see nothing on the bad segment. But at times i can see the outline of some dialogue boxes.
Thanks for your help, i will try what you said!

Hi.
I don’t know if this is a strange or common problem but my laptop screen seems to have shifted to the right.
What I mean is around the edge of the actual visual screen, there is a thin black border now on the left, and slightly on the bottom. The cursor will go up to the edge of the screen on the left, and there will be a thin black strip of unused screen before the the actual screen housing panel.
On the right side of the screen it is ok as well as the top.
Not really a problem when I’m just browsing and doing work, but when watching movies, it starts to become a pain. The bottom part of the unused screen is ok with movies being 16:9 I can’t really tell, but the left bit is pretty much the problem.
Is there something I can do technically to fix this or will it require me to open the screen up and adjust something internally?
Thanks.

My Toshiba laptop screen display has gone extra wide and expanded. How can I get it back to normal? At the moment I can’t read everything without scrolling across.

Elizabeth,
Try changing the screen resolution.
Right click on the empty area of the desktop and go the display properties and then settings. Play with the screen resolution.
