After turning the laptop off, it has never come back on
I have an IBM X31, recently, after turning it off, it has never come back on.
The screen is blank but the fan is definitely on and it gets warm so something is going on inside.
If I press the CapsLock or NumLock their light doesn’t come on.
It is definitely not the contrast or the battery.
I have been told that it could well be the harddisk, screen or the motherboard. Is there anything else that could be wrong with it?
How hard is it to fit a motherboard or a new harddisk?
First of all, you’ll need to download the hardware maintenance manual for your IBM X31 notebook. The HMM has some troubleshooting tips and it explains how to remove internal parts including hard drive and motherboard.
Here are some troubleshooting tips for you.
1. Remove the battery, unplug the AC adapter and wait for a minute. After that plug in the AC adapter and try turning it on again. Sometimes it helps.
2. Remove the hard drive and try starting the laptop without the hard drive. If the laptop boots to the IBM logo when the hard drive is removed but will not boot when the hard drive is installed, probably you have a problem with the hard drive.
If removing the hard drive doesn’t help and the laptop is still dead, probably it’s not your problem.
3. This problem can be related to memory. Try reconnecting the memory module. If you have two RAM modules installed, remove the one by one. If the laptop starts with one module but will not start with another, you have a faulty RAM module.
Also, test the laptop with RAM module installed into different slots. In some cases there is nothing wrong with the memory and the laptop has a bad memory slot.
4. Here’s the final test. Remove hard drive, DVD drive, battery, wireless card, unplug the keyboard. In short, minimize the laptop as much as you can. Now test it again. If the laptop still will not boot, even with known good memory module, most likely you have a problem with the motherboard and it has to be replaced.

I have a Toshiba A45-S250, and it is dead. I tried to power it up and nothing happened except for the front led lights started blinking orange. It seems like it is some kind of error code. I tried removing the harddrive , but it made no difference. Do you know what could the problem might be, and what caused it?

If the power LED is blinking orange and only this LED, this is a Bad Bios problem.. Try to do a Boot Block Bios recovery with an external USB floppy and a Phoenix recovery floppy.

I have a Gateway MX8711 notebook that has stopped booting to windows. It makes it to the “Gateway” screen and then goes black. It started when I attempted to boot up from AC power on a dead battery. A few seconds into the boot, my daughter mistakenly pulled the plug…after plugging in again, it will not boot. I’ve tried all the boot combinations with/without AC, with/without battery, with/without HD…all with the same result. Gateway sent me a new HD, but that didn’t help. I tried booting from the restore CD and it won’t boot that either…it’ll just spin up every couple of minutes and then stutter for a while. I tried an external monitor in case it was a display issue, but no better. Maybe a motherboard issue, but the boot log shows CPU and RAM tests passed. AC adapter is giving 19v just as it should. HELP!

I purhcased my notebook in January 2007. 11 months later, my system suddenly blinked out and would not reboot, could not power up at all. I took it back to Best Buy where I purchased it, and they had it for 3 weeks. They were suppose to have replaced the AC Adapter (ADP AC ADTR 65W part # 2522763RGWY) and the motherboard (SYB Systemboard w/UMA 943/GML 1394 SONIC-C-QUANTA, part # 4006172RGWY).
7 months later, yesterday, my notebook once again did the same thing as before and will not power up at all. I don’t understand why this has happened twice in less than 2 years. The computer is in good condition. I use it for business only. I am always connected to a power strip to protect against surges.
Can someone guide as to what to do. My warranty expired and I do not want to spend $1000 bucks to replace another Motherboard, especially not knowing why this has happened again. I can not afford to replace a motherboard every 6 to 7 months.
I desperately need my computer for work, and would like to be able to resolve this matter expediently.
Thank you!

Kelly,
Try this old trick. Unplug the AC adapter, remove the battery, wait for a few minutes. Now plug in the AC adapter and try turning it on.

I have a Maxdata 7000X, which seems to me a bulk copy of the Fujitsu Siemens Amilo M7400.
I have tried to disassemble it but failed and then assembled it back. I fear I have forced some plastic in there, although I have used maximum attention.
Now the notebook turns on, with both battery and AC power, also the fan power ups but there is no BIOS, no beeps (even when pressing many keys), USB power is OK but it looks like dead for the rest. Screen is totally powered off. Nothing changes if booting with or without RAM. I really fear about the missing beeps, because I heard beeps when pressing many keys before bootloader.
Can you help me please? Maybe I would have to find a disassemble guide for this model and then see if something got detached and/or damaged…
Please also give clues about the possible problems (video card, RAM) if you have any. Thanks!

Hi, I have a 2 yr old Gateway MX8711. I have been having trouble with the computer lately with it freezing up, Intel messages telling me the Hard Drive is needing to be replaced, now the darn thing wont power up at all. I am suspecting a new motherboard will be needed. What do you think?

Hi, I am working on a HP Pavilion (laptop) with windows mce 2005. It’s had many problems. Most of which where fixed by a hard drive replacement. However, now when i power up the laptop i get the led light for the keyboard controls, fan spin and what not but nothing displays on the screen and after 10sec the lights flash and the computer reboots. I power it down with the power button and repeat this about 3 times and then the HP logo pops up and the computer boots and works great. I know the HD is good. And i ran the MS mem diagnostic and it came out good. I also took the ram out and reseated it and tried them solo in different slots. Any thoughts????????????
