After I took apart Toshiba Tecra M3 the touchpad stopped working

I rather stupidly took apart my Toshiba Tecra M3 to clean the heat sink. Upon reassembly the touchpad was frozen, upon which I discovered that the touchpad cable was not connected. It is connected to the motherboard but I cant seem to find where it attaches on the touchpad end?

Apparently you accidentally pulled the cable from the touchpad during the disassembly process. I’ve done the same mistake on both Tecra M2 and Tecra M3 laptops.
Here’s what you should do.
1. Remove the palmrest (top cover) again as it shown in the step 12 in this disassembly guide.
2. Turn over the palmrest and remove screws from the touchpad. Separate the touchpad from the palmrest.
3. On the back side of the touchpad you’ll see white sticky tape. Remove the tape.
4. Plug the touchpad cable back into the touchpad, make sure to plug the correct end of the cable and secure it back to the touchpad with the same sticky tape.
5. Install the touchpad back into the palmrest and assemble everything back together.

If the touchpad still not working after the cable has been properly installed, try enabling the touchpad with Fn+F9 keys.

Laptop freak I cant thank you enough
I missed the connection under the tape
After removing the tape and locking the cable with more tape, it worked although i decided not to put the touchpad screws back as I would have had to remove the connection at the motherboard to give me the space required.
    Thanks again

    Jon,
You are welcome. Usually it happens when you forget to unplug the touchpad cable from the motherboard and remove the top cover with the touchpad cable still attached to the motherboard.
When I made this mistake for the first time I was very frustrated because it took me a while to figure out why the touchpad stopped working. The cable got pulled from the connector on the touchpad but it was covered by tape and I didn’t see that the cable is disconnected from the touchpad.

I have a Sony Vaio PCG-FX310 and the touchpad doesn’t work, this was a laptop that had a broken screen and needed an new OS re-installed. I fixed the broken screen and installed xp, but the touchpad doesn’t work. I’ve been to their website and downloaded recommended drivers for touchpad but to no avail. Add to that, i’ve been unable to locate any recovery disks for it. If you know of a work around to enable the touchpad, i’d be more than glad to hear it, as i’ve been using a serial mouse which is not the most convenient solution when i need to carry the laptop with me in a mobile fashion.

    Many thanks in advance.

I have a Toshiba Tecra M2 which I have had to reformat the hard drive. However I don’t have the origional disks (that was the box that didn’t make it when we moved) and want to know where I can download drivers. Especially the touchpad driver. I havent found any assistance on the Toshiba sites. Can you help please. The biggest issue I have is taht without the driver the mouse pointer appears to have a mind of its own.

YOU ARE A GENIOUS! My two year old somehow got to my laptop and I couldn’t figure out how the cursor was frozen in the middle of the screen. I’ve searched through my computer using tab and enter. Then, searched online for the last hour with nothing TILL I found you! Your simple FN + F9 saved me. Thanks!

I have recently taken my Toshiba Satellite L305 apart to fix the power jack. In doing so my touch pad cable came disconnected. I have reconnected it but the touch pad will not work I think I may have damaged the cable when reconnecting it. I am not very knowledgeable with computers and I was wondering if you could tell me where I can get a replacement cable. I tried spare part warehouse but I do not know the technical name for the cable and could not really find what I was looking for. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Did you try to enable it with Fn+F9 shortcut? Press and hold down the Fn key and at the same time press once on the F9 key. This combination enables/disables the touchpad.

Yeah I tried that after after reading some of the other problems but it did not work. I have also tried reconnecting the cable every way that I could. To be honest I did not know that there was a lock on the things that the cable plugs into and I always just pushed it back in thinking that it was supposed to be hard to push it in. When I did that I bent the cable pretty bad. That it why I think that I damaged the cable. Any suggestions?
