My Toshiba Satellite laptop cannot read recovery DVD disc

I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop. I’m trying to recover it using the recovery DVD that came with the computer. I followed the instructions on the DVD case: popped in the DVD, shut down the computer, powered up the computer while pressing F12. I see the screen with 4 options and I chose CD/DVD. The instructions says the computer should reboot from the DVD after picking this option, but I only see a black screen. The DVD is attempting to be read but nothing happens at all. I repeated the process several times, but I get the same thing. Can you help please?

You are doing everything correctly and it should work.
Try cleaning the recovery DVD disc with a soft cloth, maybe the disc is dirty. Also, try cleaning the CD/DVD drive laser with alcohol wipe, maybe the laser is not clean.
Is the laptop still bootable into Windows? Can you see the CD/DVD drive in My Computer? Does your CD/DVD drive read CDs and DVDs?
What is your reason for reimaging the hard drive?
Here’s what you can try to narrow down the problem. Try booting the laptop from another bootable disc. You can use generic Windows OS CD, live Linux CD (Knoppix for example), ultimate boot CD or any other bootable CD/DVD.
If the laptop boots from other discs but not from the Toshiba recovery disc, apparently the recovery disc is not good and has to be replaced.
If the laptop cannot boot from any bootable disc then most likely you have a problem with the CD/DVD drive.

My problem is slightly different. I can’t reboot/restart my Toshiba M45 laptop. So I tried using my recovery DVD.
Because my computer will not reboot after shutting down I’m unable to do anything. I get as far as the Toshiba screen while holding down the “C” key as called for in the instructions but I stay hung up on the Toshiba screen.
My original problem that started all this is my computer will never completely shut down. It gives me the message that “windows is shutting down” but after waiting with nothing happening I have to shut down maually. Then to start up again I have to wait for an hour or so and maybe even more before windows will reload. Sometimes it’s the next day before Windows(XP)will load up.
I’ve used several antivirus and spyware programs, cleaned files, etc.so the drive is clean.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

I have a Sony Vaio and my computer is having difficulty reading dvd’s after being “paused”. I would pause the movie and then try to play again and it will not read the dvd. It even happened with a brand new movie! Does anyone know what the problem may be and know how to fix it?

I have ordered a second recovery CD because I thought the first one was bad. However, come to find out, it is my CD rom that is not recognizing the recovery CD. I tried to plug in an external cd/dvd player (which is able to recognize the cd) however it won’t read it until after Windows has initialized.

Does anyone know how I can get the computer to effectively boot from the external dvd drive? The F12 or “U” still doesn’t do anything…

I used to have the E: Drive as the DVD R/RW drive and the F: was listed as the CD R/RW drive. They were not listed together under one letter… I don’t know why. When I would look under my computer, they were listed separately (those were the factory settings because I never touched them)… But I installed I-Tunes and the F: Drive disappeared. In I-Tunes, I used to have to select the F: drive for CDs to burn. Now, if i try to burn a CD, the name of the F: drive is no longer there (I think it listed the brand of the CD writer – TEAC something or other)… that is gone all together. If I choose the other one that’s left (TSST Corp), you will see that something has burned onto the CD, but then the drive (or my CD player) do not recognize that there is anything on it. (And it is set to burn into the WAV format.) I don’t know why it’s not working or where the F: Drive disappeared to???

    Michele,

I have a combo dvd/cd r/ rw drive. It recognizes E: which is the DVD R. I can’t find the F: drive anywhere – not in the My computer, my devices or anywhere else.

C: is the main partition on the hard drive (or first hard drive)
D: is the second partition on the hard drive (or second hard drive)
    E: is the DVD/CD R/RW drive.

What supposed to be there under F:? What are you missing?

I have a problem that some DVD’s and memory disc with higher capacity such as 4GB cannoot be opened

If your laptop can access and read files on CDs but not on DVDs, there is a problem with the DVD drive.
Try cleaning the laser inside the drive. You can use cotton swab soaked in alcohol.
If you still have the same problem, most likely you’ll have to replace the drive.

    SC,

when trying to boot from the Tosh CD, it only opens so that I can see the files, rather than autoplaying and going into the Tosh screen where it writes back the ghost image, or whatever.

You have to boot the laptop from the recovery disc, not open it in Windows.
In order to boot your Toshiba laptop from the recovery disc you have to follow these steps:
    1. Insert the recovery disc into the optical drive
    2. Restart the laptop and press F12 when Toshiba logo appears on the screen
    3. Select CD/DVD drive from the boot menu and press OK
    4. The laptop will start booting from the recovery disc and after that all you have to do is follow the instructions on the screen

Hi there, my Toshiba Satellite A30 laptop has recently developed a virus which I cannot remove so was hoping to revert back to the recovery disk and start from scratch. All my data is backed up onto an external hard drive.

However, when trying to boot from the Tosh CD, it only opens so that I can see the files, rather than autoplaying and going into the Tosh screen where it writes back the ghost image, or whatever.

My drive auto plays other CDs and DVDs so why now is my recovery disk playing up and is there anything I can do or get round this problem anyway?

Many thanks for any assistance, Freaks!

    M J A,

If i use the recovery DVD that came with the laptop to restore my system,WILL IT DELETE ALL MY DATA or will it ask me to save a copy?

wildmanv is right, if you run the recovery disc and reimage the hard drive back to factory default it will ERASE all personal data from the hard drive.
    Here’s what you can try.
    1. Try booting the laptop to “Last Known Good Configuration” from the boot options. It’s possible that the laptop will boot properly after that.
    2. See if you can boot into Safe Mode. If you can, try using the system restore utility and recover to an earlier point, as wildmanv suggested.
    3. If you still cannot boot it into your profile, you can try accessing the laptop hard drive using an external USB enclosure. Hopefully you’ll be able to access your profile and transfer files.

    wildmanv Says:

    M J A,

Can you recover to an earlier saved point in which your system was running good ?
I beleive if you use the recovery discs, it will delete all of your stuff.
As long as you can save them to either and cd or a memory stick, I would suggest you do so before using the recovery discs.

i have a toshiba satellite laptop. Apparently it has developed some system error and is not letting me login, even as the administrator.
It displays” Unable to log you on due to account restriction”.
Earlier it never asked for password and the laptop booted completely without the need for entering password.I can only logon as GUEST now.
Now i hav a query…If i use the recovery DVD that came with the laptop to restore my system,WILL IT DELETE ALL MY DATA or will it ask me to save a copy?
Also,is there any way to read the DVD’s data on any other pc?
Any help in this regard is MOST welcome…..i hav tried everything.

I am very worried about my Toshiba laptop. It is 2 yrs old and has never caused me any problems. Today I took a flight and I forgot to shut down the laptop pre travel. It went through the Xray machine and then I took it as hand luggage. When I switched it on at home the battery appeared to be dead- unsurprisingly. I plugged it into the mains but it still would not boot up despite all the lights being on. The power-switch is also lit up in blue (even without power attached) but seems to be stuck. The screen is black. I have taken it to a reputable repair shop and he said he will have to open it up to investigate. Does anyone have any ideas what could be wrong with it? Will I lose all my hard drive data? Help I am panicing- I also know nothing about computer programming.
