I’m getting “Output A:/ghost.err” message when I run recovery disc

I have Toshiba Satellite A75-S211 laptop and I’m getting “Output A:/ghost.err” error while restoring the configuration. So, I called Toshiba Tech support. They referred me to an authorized Service company. It looks like a known issue for users, but I don’t know why Toshiba doesn’t have solution.

First. Clean the recovery disc with a clean soft cloth. Run the recovery process and see if it works fine after cleaning the disc.
Second. Clean the DVD drive laser with 99% isopropyl alcohol and try running the recovery disc again.
Third. Test the hard drive, make sure it passes the diagnostic test. You can use Hitachi’s DFT utility for testing the hard drive. If the hard drive fails test, you’ll have to replace the hard drive.
Forth. It could be a bad disc and you’ll have to replace it.
Fifth. Could be something wrong with the DVD drive. Try installing generic version of Windows from another CD. If you can do that, apparently there is nothing wrong with the DVD drive. If it fails too, it’s possible that your DVD drive bad.

I HAD AN OUTPUT A:/ GHOST .ERR MESSAGE ON MY TOSHIBA SATELLITE M45.
IT LASTED FOR HOURS, AND I GOT VERY FRUSTRATED. I CHECKED MANY FO0RUMS LIKE THIS. THE TOSHIBA WEBSITE…BLAH, BLAH, BLAH…

I FELT THAT THE CD/DVD ROM WAS BAD, BUT, I JUST NEEDED TO FIX MY LAPTOP THAT NIGHT.

I UNSCREWED THE ROM DRIVE SCREW AND IT SLID OUT.
    THAT DIDN’T HELP.
I BUMPED [LIGHTLY] THE DRIVE AGAINST THE FLOOR. THAT DIDN’T WORK.

SO, WHILE I WAS ABOUT TO TROW THE THING OUT THE WINDOW, I NOTICED A LABLE THAT SAID, “DON’T OPEN”. sO, i OPENED IT.

ONCE OPEN, I USED MY TECHNICAL SKILLZ AND BLEW INTO IT.

I CLOSED IT UP AND THE RESTORE WENT GREAT…

MAYBE YOU CAN TRY SOME OF THAIS TECHNICAL REVALATION.

    -FUN.

Last nightI was attempting to reinstall XP on my three year old Toshiba Satellite M45-S169. I had recently installed 1 GB more memory, made some other changes to various programs, and for some reason Internet Exporer would not work. After putting the resuce disc in the drive, and following the procdures as per the instructions, the unit got about 35 percent into the recovery when the message “Output A:\Ghost.ERR?”, and “Application Error 437″, appeared. It prompts you to select Y or N but whichever I chose, it failed. I have no Drive A, either.

After attempting reinstallation a half-dozen times, with the same problem happening each time, I unplugged everything from the Toshiba’s USB port(s), unplugged the A/C power cord and removed the battery. I let it sit for about an hour, reinstalled the battery and plugged in the A/C. When I reinserted the rescue disc, and followed the other procedures, it worked successfully. After installing the Windows Updates, the computer was fine and is working like new.

Note: I wrote posted this same reply on another forum this evening, with the same user name, regarding the same topic.

I removed and cleaned the disk, cleaned the lens with alcohol and removed the battery for about 10 minutes. I had no issues on the second attempt. I’m not sure which one fixed it, but thanx for everyones input.

Thank you very much for the info. I have an M55 notebook which stopped booting up. Was running the recovery when I got the Ghost message. Was told the hard drive was bad and had to replace. Did that, but still got the message when trying to do the recovery. Toshiba techs told me that it’s a bad CD and need to go to an authorized store since they’ve discontinued carrying the CD! Just took your advice and cleaned the CD and removed the battery for 10 minutes and unplugged. Got all the way through the recovery process afterwards. Thanks again.
