Comments on: CD/DVD drive stopped reading all CDs and DVDs

I have a Toshiba Satellite A305-6913 running 64 bit Windows 7. My DVD player will work for a while and then it will just freeze. If I just restart the DVD drive will disappear all together. I have flashed my BIOS, checked for the upper and lower under regedit, uninstalled and reinstalled the driver, removed the DVD player and cleaned it but none of this works. The only way to get it to work again is to remove AC and battery power and then it shows up and works fine again – for a few days. I am at a loss obviously, any ideas?

My HP Pavilion no longer recognizes my built in CD/DVD driv. When I look for it under “My Computer” it isn’t there. If I push the button to open it, it doesn’t open. Even using the “paper clip” trick I often cannot open it.

some genius mentioned, that if we right click on CD rom on device manager and uninstall it, and reboot, that will reinstall the CD rom, let me tell u , thats not working mate

What not working? The drive will not reinstall or it doesn’t fix the problem?
Maybe your drive is bad and has to be replaced?

Hello,

I have a HP pavilion dv5234 laptop and my cd/dvd driver isn’t working anymore. Before it would pop out every 10 sec (like someone else mentioned) and now when I press the button it won’t even open. Not even when I select the “eject disc” from the driver.

CURRENT STATUS: when I press the button SOMETIMES the light will appear green (and that’s the end of that) and other times nothing will happen.
I’ve opened the drive w/a paper clip and inserted a CD or DVD and the driver won’t read it.

SOLUTIONS I’VE TRIED:
1) uninstalling and redetecting my cd/dvd driver from device manager — at least the light turns green more times than not now.
2) attempted to find driver updates — all that I found on the HP support website were catered towards Windows 7 or Vista, which I have Windows XP

I have an Acer Aspire 3003LM laptop/notebook and it will no longer read cd’s or dvd’s . The green light flashes when i insert either a cd or dvd and it makes a short high pitched noise every 2 or 3 seconds but doesn’t sound like it is actually spinning the disc . Microsoft Fix it , cant mend it . It says there is no readable media . So im assuming that it’s optical drive that’s somehow died .
Can i buy any replacement dvd+rw combo drive to replace it or do i have to buy a specific one ?
At present it has an Liteon dvd=rw SOSW 833S ( VRS2)(E) installed .

Thinkpad T42 CD-RW DVD-Rom drive cable catches and kinks when closing tray. There is a very thin flexible plastic cable that follows the tray out underneath. When you close it instead of sliding back in the cable folds and kinks and gets pull into drive and flattened again. I can’t imagine the cable would last this way for more than a few dozen cycles. I have taken the drive cover off expecting to find something that prevents this but there is nothing. At this point I use a finger to guide the cable everytime I close the tray. Any ideas?

my hp pavilion dv6000 is no longer recognizing blank cd’s. it recognizes both normal, store-bought audio cd’s, and dvd’s but not the blanks. i have already right-clicked on the properties of the drive to make sure it’s allowed for recording. any other suggestions?

i have a lenovo note book model no 85Q of N-series.It can’t read any CD but can read dvd.

1. Try cleaning the optical drive lens with alcohol.
2. Try deleting the CD/DVD drive entry from the device manager and let Windows re-detect the optical drive on startup. It will reinstall the driver.
3. If nothing helps, probably you’ll have to replace the drive.
