Is it possible just to remove the fan assembly and leave the heat sink likes James sugested or is it better practice to replace the thermal paste/pads?

Big Thanks Guys, The service guide is Awesome and just what I need right now as my 6710ea has become very noisy and I have a new fan on its way from HK. My Experience as an electronic engineer has shown thermal pads/paste are essential to get the heat transfer, not an option.
James - maybe its time to give up the weed.

When I got into this I was not expecting a complete disassemble. That's what happened. Be prepared to completely remove the motherboard and only remove the three small black screws holding the actual fan onto the heat sink. Otherwise, if you remove the whole fan assembly, you will need thermal paste to put the assembly back onto the motherboard. Be extra careful because a few male connectors inside were poorly, poorly made and had to be replaced as the basically fell apart when disconnecting.

I am replacing a fan in an HP G60 today. (yay). Thanks for the link to the service manuals up top. Big help. The fan on this one just stopped. Almost every system that is brought to me is broken by the consumer. Word to the wise...Don't smoke constantly around your computer. I have had more fans, motherboards, etc. ruined by cigarette smoke's tar buildup over the years and it can be a particularly annoying little problem to diagnose. The cooling vent on this HP is clogged with a really nice blend of cigarette tar and dust. Oh, well...it's a living.

I have disassembled the Dv8000 (8130us/ca) multiple times, the only things you will need are a Philips screwdriver and a flathead screwdriver (or a knife, or anything flat enough to get under the screen, however to take the fan out you will have to remove the whole heat sink

which means you will have to get some thermal paste, and a new thermal pad (the thermal pad on the gpu needs about a 2mm thickness, the the cpu beside it uses a thermal paste, although if you like you could use a very thin thermal pad)

the only real problems are the ZIF connectors for the keyboard and mouse, which are somewhat fragile and must be plugged in to work. as well as taking the motherboard out, which is somewhat painful to do as there is no easy way to do it (requires a bit of force and some tricky maneuvering.

however, whether the fan is worth replacing is a matter of question. I'm already needing my second one in a 4 year period, and whats weird is a don't do any gaming or other expensive processing, so it seems that the fan model that it comes with is quite low quality, and you may want to find another model that fits.

All you need is a star head screw driver and a maintenance guide if you've never taken a laptop apart. it sounds more complicated but just try to keep different screws separated and notes as to where they come from. i just do this mentally since i've been doing this for a few years. get all parts of ebay except batteries, avoid those replacements. oh yeah, also motherboards.

I have a HP pavilion dv8000t. It has the fan problem. I looked up the service manual, ordered the spare fan, and dismantled the laptop to replace the fan. Only to find that the supplied product number and fan pictured in the manual is NOT the fan in my HP. That was Part #: 403826-001

Any idea how I can find out the correct part # to obtain the fan I need?

Thanks
