My harddrive failed and I cannot reinstall operating system

The harddrive makes a weird noise and suddenly the screen goes blank loose all my work. I did my backup recovery disks and bought a new harddrive; I tried booting from the disk but no-go, the screen comes and says no operating system found.
I had to put back in my old harddrive. I’m so frustrated with this laptop. Please help!

Make sure the laptop actually boots from the DVD drive. Apparently the laptop is not booting from the recovery disc and goes straight to the hard drive. You have a new blank hard drive installed, that’s why you see “No operating system found” message.
Here’s what you should do. Enter the BIOS setup menu, go to the boot order menu and set the DVD drive as first bootable device in the order. Safe changes and restart the laptop. If you did everything correctly and your recovery disc is good, the laptop will start booting from the recovery disc and you’ll be able to reimage the hard drive back to factory defaults.

I have an old Toshiba Satellite 2065 CDS with “no operating system.” Everything seemed to run properly, but after the “Toshiba” screen it goes right to the operating system line. I would like to donate it to the local school for repair but I feel the need to remove the hard drive first. Even though it is several years old, some vital info is on there. I’ve found several websites that show you how to remove them, but none for my model. Any suggestions?

I’m helping a friend re-install Windows XP after a hard drive failure. The hard drive has been replaced and the BIOS does have the CD-Rom at the top of the boot order list. However it still won’t boot from the CD I’ve used this CD before, so I know it is good. The PC is an Averatec 6400 series. I went to Averatec’s website to download their manuals, but all the links are broken :-( HELP :-(

My question is somewhat related: I have a Toshiba Satellite P25S520 Laptop. It has a Pentium 4 3Ghz processor, the maximum ram (2GB), Hard drive 80 GB/5400rpm and was working well until last Sept. Suddenly, I kept getting the blue screen of death with its varying & meaningless corruption numbers. Did a complete virus, spyware, malware and adware scan. HD came up clean.Had a tech check it and he said the registry of Windows XP Home(OS)was corrupted. Since then I have used an external drive to copy off my iTunes stuff, photos, etc. I purchased an Hitachi IDE 2.5″ that was larger – 120GB. I opened the back of the laptop carefully, removed the hard disk and tried to replace it with the larger one. No matter what I did it would not recognize it. It was as if it didn’t fit correctly. I searched for Bios updates that might lead to it being recognized, but gave up today and was just going to let it go, replace the corrupted HD that it came with and use the Toshiba Recovery disk to start over. I carefully replaced the drive in to the frame on the back of the compartment “door” and once screwed in tried to boot up. Just got error messages about PX.EXE not being present. Tried the 3-finger salute after placing the Recovery Disc into the optical drive and it started examining the specs of the laptop. Then it warned me about the complete loss of HD data and I said OK. Then the message was to type “C” if I wanted to continue in the formatting and restoration. Then it just hung. Without going to Geek Squad or Firedog people who often know less than I do, can you give me some help???? Thanks in advance if you can.

P.S. When I tried to upgrade the HD to 120GB it said it didn’t find an HD. Now its also saying that with the original HD but my WIN XP PRO disk, that’s why I went back to the Recovery Disc Toshiba packed in the box.

    Hi – -

seems that Toshiba recovery disk only works with the same size Toshiba bought replacement part.

I just bought a 250 Gb disk from Circuit City and the recovery disk gets to the :

    to continue press (c) to abort press (a) [C, A]? I pressed C but it does nothing. . .

Toshiba said that my computer is out of warranty so they would charge me to reinstall Win XP Professional

Toshiba support said the drive needed to be reformatted to be recognized by an authorized dealer

anyone know how to get this reinstalled ?

    thanks

    Mike

This is not correct. The recovery will work with any hard drive compatible with your laptop.
Maybe your laptop is too old for a 250GB hard drive and the BIOS simply cannot support large drives?

If your laptop is relatively new, try the following. Access the BIOS setup menu and load default settings. That key could be HOME, F9 or something else, it depends on the BIOS version. You’ll see instructions on the bottom of the page.
Set default values, save the settings, reboot the laptop and try reimaging the hard drive again.

My wife’s Toshiba Satellite P10 had its HD replace about a year ago. I want to use the recovery disk to reload a clean install, because the machine has become so sluggish. What steps are recommended to insure a smooth and easy reinstall. Maybe someone can refer me to a GOOD website to lead me through this. I am not a newbie, but neither am I a geek.
    Thanks for the help.

Toshiba M45-S269 about 4 years old; hard drive has been formatted and is being detected.

If I need to access BIOS setup, how do I do that?
