The DELL OS CD is the recovery disk that came with the laptop so I'm not sure which one it is. I also have the XP SP2 disk and I tried that but still nothing.

Would it be a boot fail?

rosa,

-windows xp boot screen
-”system is checking your hardware configurations”
-blank/black screen

and its been like this for 30 minutes.

Take a look at the Dell OS CD. Does it say what version of XP you are installing? Is it Service Pack 1 or Service Pack 2?
I believe Windows XP SP1 will not support large drives.

Hello! Thank you for reading my post.

I have a DELL Inspiron 9300. My original hard
disk (60GB) was giving me problems. Two
days ago, I tried to start the computer but it
would go to the Windows XP screen and then
load a blank (or black) screen. I tried rebooting
a couple of times but it still happened.

Today, I went out got and new one (320GB). I
formatted it on another computer to give me
two different partitions (~120GB each) so I can
do a fresh install on one of them using the
recovery cd. Here comes the problem.

When I didn't have the hard drive in the
computer, the recovery cd would work fine.
The blue installation screen would pop up and
tt would go all the way to the "install a fresh
copy of Windows XP" option before telling me
that I didn't have a hard disk installed.
When I did have the hard drive in the computer
and the recovery cd in the cd-rom drive, it
would go through this:

-windows xp boot screen
-"system is checking your hardware configurations"
-blank/black screen

and its been like this for 30 minutes.

Any ideas?

I just bought a 320 Gb disk from SeaGate and the recovery disk gets to the :

to continue press (c) to abort press (a) [C, A]? I pressed C but it reboots from the CD-ROM drive. . .

Toshiba M45-S269 about 4 years old; hard drive has been formatted and is being detected.

If I need to access BIOS setup, how do I do that?

My wife's Toshiba Satellite P10 had its HD replace about a year ago. I want to use the recovery disk to reload a clean install, because the machine has become so sluggish. What steps are recommended to insure a smooth and easy reinstall. Maybe someone can refer me to a GOOD website to lead me through this. I am not a newbie, but neither am I a geek.
Thanks for the help.

Mike B,

seems that Toshiba recovery disk only works with the same size Toshiba bought replacement part.
This is not correct. The recovery will work with any hard drive compatible with your laptop.
Maybe your laptop is too old for a 250GB hard drive and the BIOS simply cannot support large drives?

If your laptop is relatively new, try the following. Access the BIOS setup menu and load default settings. That key could be HOME, F9 or something else, it depends on the BIOS version. You'll see instructions on the bottom of the page.
Set default values, save the settings, reboot the laptop and try reimaging the hard drive again.
