Laptop turns itself off when playing games
Although my laptop turns itself off when the fan is obscured (not good fan clearly) it turns itself off when playing games even when I raise the laptop to give the fan space. Could it be related to the processor usage related to running a game. I am sure this is not a software problem. I live in Sierra Leone and computer fixers are few and far between, what can I do myself when spare parts are not available?
I think the laptop turns off because the processor overheats. Could it be related to the processor usage related to running a game? Definitely! Higher processor usage generates more heat.
If the heatsink in your laptop is clogged with dust, raising the laptop will not help. The laptop shuts down because dust inside the heatsink kills normal airflow.
Remove dust from the heatsink and most likely it will fix your problem. The easiest way to clean the heatsink is to spray compressed air inside the air intakes on the bottom of the laptop.

Laptop shuts down. I have a HP L2005us 2gbmem 80g;hd, xpprosp3,
The system shuts down frequently and unpredictably. One second its on and the next second it is off, with no automatic reboot. There is no shut down sequence. This is NOT a heat issue, it occurs with the processor at any temperature, from seconds after reboot to 8 hours after booting the system. I have also had it cleaned recently, there was a lot of dust. The cleaning has cooled the system but has no effect upon the shut-down issue. I have also reinstalled the os in an attempt to fix this issues to no avail.. I have updated all drivers.
This happens more often when plugged in, but also happens on battery.
This happens more often when running utorrent, skype or streaming audio and video.
This is driving my insane.
Any help would be appreciated

I am not getting any voltage to the CPU fan on a Inspiron 2200. The fan tested fine on the bench and I have even tried i8kfangui but no voltage to the fan connector.
Has anyone else seen this?

Hi,
I have a Toshiba Satellite A65 that overheats and shuts down frequently. Can you give me the part number of the fan, and also instructions for replacing it?
I’d really appreciate it.

I have this issue when doing almost anything and I’m hoping you can offer some insight.
I have an Hp pavilion dv8100 notebook that keeps shutting itself down. It’s done this for a while and it was a problem of overheating, so I replaced the fan and cleaned the heatsink. The problem is that it still acts like its overheating even though it is definatly not and continues to shut itself down, sometimes seconds after powering up. Both the Ac adapter and battery are fairly new, so I’m sure it isn’t a power issue. I’de love to not have to replace it completely, but at this point it seem inevitable, so I’m really hoping there’s some solution I’m just not seeing.
Thanks in advance.

Taylor,
Sounds like a software related problem.
Scan your computer for spyware and viruses.

Having the shutdown problem with a DV6768SE laptop. When checking administrative logs it seems LiveUpdate(Norton) was attempting to run just minutes prior. This may be possible culprit. Will attempt to disable LiveUpdate to see if this problem goes away.

Jasmin,
I think your problem is related to overheating. When you run a game, the CPU runs hotter.
Check the heat sink, most likely it’s clogged with dust. You can clean the heat sink using compressed air but the proper way would be taking it apart and removing all the dust.
Buy a can of compressed air and spray it into the fan grill until the dust stops coming out. It should help.

I got the same problem with rick with my acer aspire 8920g. I bought it back in 08 and it has been working fantastic until recently. I do regularly clean my laptop, blowing it with compressed air. Recently, after I blew it with compressed air, it justed to shut off when playing games. I can use it and go on line for hours and nothing happens. But, about 5 mins into the game, my laptop shuts off. So I found this and thought I needed to get into the heat sink. I opened it and blew out the dust. indeed it was clogged. After I blew everything out, I put it all back together and played some games. It was super fast, but after 30 mins of game play, it shut down. I did everything and now it’s doing it again. I even put a fan pad on the bottom while playing it and it still shuts off. do I need a new heat sink? a new fan? I was just thinking about moding and just putting a fan right on top of the processor. if anyone has a solution, please advise me and rick and everyone else here. Thanks

hi i have a dell inspiron 1764. when i first bought it, it didnt seem to have any issues but i wasnt playing lots of games on it. lately i’ve tried to play some games and every time i do they’ll play great for a few minutes but then the screen will either become a multicolored linear static or just a random solid color and the laptop will yell out with this dull high pitched noise and wont be responsive at all and i’ll have to do a manual shutdown. afterwards i feels that the laptop has run a bit hot and i let it cool down before i turn it back on.

I used to have this problem, but then I just bought a cooling pad (a Belkin, if you must know) and used it on my desk, and now everything is all tip-top shape and Bristol fashion.
