I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop. It shuts down without warning when operating on battery power. It usually happens within minutes of unpluggig the AC power. The battery indicator shows plenty of charge when it happens. I even switched batteries from another 1501 and it still does the same thing. It runs fine and never shuts down when plugged into AC power. I first thought it was a heat problem and replaed a noisy fan. I do hear the fan working. If it was a heat poblem it should shut down when on AC power. Any help would be appreciated.

I want to thank you for your suggestion about not blocking the air intake. I didn't realize that my HP had the intake on the bottom and was being blocked when I would have my laptop on a tray on (of all things) my lap. Raising that back of the computer about 1/2 inch from the tray has resolved the problem. Thanks again.

DebraK,

When I am running a graphic or video website I can hear my fan get louder and then it will shut off.
Sounds like overheating problem. You can try cleaning the heat sink using compressed air. Buy a can of compressed air and spray it into the air intake on the bottom of the laptop. Make sure there is no dust inside the heat sink.

I have a laptop Gateway MX8711. When I am running a graphic or video website I can hear my fan get louder and then it will shut off. Sometimes it is not even hot enough to overheat. I always make sure it gets air flow. Can someone please help?

I have an NEC VERSA A2100 which does this. I'd like to pull it apart to clean the heatsinks and smear new heat conducting compound on them but I can't find any info on how to do so.

The generic disassembly info for other laptops such as the Toshibas is great. Is the NEC much different?

Thanks for any assistance,---geoff

i can be doing something on my laptop and it will just cut off and has touble starting up again, it is an acer aspire, since it is still under warranty ive sent it back about 3 or 4 times now and still having the same sort of problems. Acer Repair Center say it was the heatsink and/or thermal module they cleaned it and sorted it out an told me to keep it on a flat surface and when i do it still happens, strangely my girlfriend has exactly the same sort of laptop and she can have hers on the sofa arm even on the bed for hours and she has absolutely no problems with hers, im at my wits end

I have a satellite a135-s2386. A while back, it would shut down while playing games. we discovered the heatsink clogged with dust so we cleaned it and this resolved the issue. now it has a new issue. once I start the pc it will shut itself down shortly after booting. once it shut the monitor down, I could hear a noise that something was still on, possibly the hard disk however, I noticed the CPU fan not running. so I shut the machine down and restarted it and watched the CPU fan. the fan comes on at startup and shuts off on it's own within about 10 seconds. this must be the issue but why would the fan shut itself off?

Hi,

i've got a brand new acer aspire one with 120gb harddrive, 6cell battery and windows xp. it's been working fine for the past 2 months, but when i tried turning it on today it shuts off after about a minute of two, no matter if i let windows load or go into setup. the battery is fully loaded and i'm not able to open any applications (since it turns off just as windows in fully loaded)...
could it be a virus??
