Laptop turns on but nothing appears on the screen

I have the following symptoms with my laptop. When I press the power button it lights up and I hear the fan and a single click sound, but nothing appears on the screen and it does nothing else. To power it off, I have to hold down the power button for about 10 seconds. Things I’ve tried so far: Removed & replaced existing battery; removed & replaced existing hard drive… still nothing. Please help!

That could be memory failure. Try reconnecting the memory module, moving it into the empty slot. If both memory slots are occupied, remove modules one by one and test the laptop with each one separately.
Let’s say your laptop starts fine with the module 1 but will not start when the module 2 is installed. If that’s the case, the memory module 2 is bad and has to be replaced.

    I have Toshiba A 105 S 42-11 laptop
I recently tried to update the BIOS of my laptop as recommended by Toshiba Co. But when I double-clicked bios update button within Windows XP itself, it sayed plase wait for about 5 minutes.
I turned off the laptop by holding power button.

That’s it, when i turn on power comes on, you can hear prosessor fan, but no image on the screen, it’s absolutely blank.

I have a new HP530 laptop. It’s great except that every time you turn it on it doesn’t boot up strat away – first of all you get a blank screen with ‘emergency reboot after 3..2..1..’ then if you wait it boots up.

Am I being really thick to think this is not normal. Is there any way I can stop this happening?

About the blank screen . .
    Try an external monitor.
If still nothing, think graphic card/main board.
If you can get a picture, examine your lcd in bright light.
If there is the faintest of pictures while say windows
is loaded or when inside BIOS, then it either is your lcd inverter (most common) or the lcd light itself (rare).
Also try using the combination (ususally fn key plus a function key) that alternates external with internal monitor.
    God bless

I’m working on a Toshiba A105-4011. I want to remove the CMOS battery. I have it torn down to the MB, but am afraid of wrecking the battery holder. It looks pretty dainty and fragile. How is this done safely?

This is because it would not boot to Windows – only Media Express Player and then hangs on the Language Options page. There is no response from the keyboard for Safe Mode, Utilities, BIOS. Most recently it shows a ‘PXE-E61 – Media Test Failure, Check Cable’. It won’t boot from an XP CD nor the UBCD. I think it was probably infected and the boot order was changed in the Bios. I was hoping that by removing the battery the bios would reset to factory defaults and solve the problem. Any thoughts?

i had the above problem but only after various warnings that my computer had been infected with a virus! after various attempts and scans etc and opening up in safe mode and also tried running the recovery disc, the laptop (hp 530) then refused to switch on at all and i was left with a blank screen and very frustated!! i decided to visit a forum to see what advice was to offered, my laptop is (was)running with 3gb on 2 seperate cards in the back, i removed the 1st card (the extra i had put in when i first got it cos it was a bit slow) and tried to start it but nothing happened! after which i then removed the original 1gb card and slotted in my 2gb card then tried to switch it on…. HEY PRESTO!! the only verdict now for me is that the original 1gb of ram supplied in the computer got fried somehow and if it can’t find the 1st card then it can’t access the 2nd card! please don’t give up if you have this problem cos i was very close to sending it to be repaired and this would’ve cost me a few quid no doubt! i would personnaly like to thank the person/s who posted this advice on this forum because it goes to show there is some really good advice on these types of sites.

thanks again and keep up the good work!

My laptop has recently been soaked in coffee. Thanks to myself. So my daughter and I cleaned out the keyboard. But now everytime I turn it on Compaq loads and then out of nowhere Express Media Player comes up and it says “Please Insert the Disc.” I am fairly confused and only once in a while does the laptop actually work.
What do I do? The laptop has all of my work files on it!

Thank you for your help in advance,
    Ingrid

Hi, i have a nec versa m400 laptop, it was dropped from a small height and then when i tried to start it, it sounds like it is going to start up for 10 secs then does nothing. i did notice after it was dropped that the wireless indicator is now on, when it never used to be, there is a funny little plastic slot thingie on the side (yeah im not computer literate) that i have no idea what it is, but understand it has something to do with the wireless? i took this laptop into a shop to be looked at and the outcome was that the technician thought it was the motherboard that was broken from the fall and wasnt worth fixing. I brought the laptop home and later that night thought i would try to turn it on one more time, before i did tho, i took the funny plastic card thingie out looked at it, and put it back in, (still wondering what the hell it is) pushed the start button and lo and behold the computer booted up and i was able to use the computer. after about an hour i turned it off again, thinking cool its working again, but when i tried to turn it on again this morning, its back to doing nothing. i tried removing the funny plastic card and puttin it back in over and over, but still the laptop wont boot up … ugh!!! do you think it is the motherboard that is broken or could it be something much simplier? any suggestions would be gratefully recieved. Thanks so much. Jo

My HP laptop is about one and a half years old. It was used for school, but not always treated properly. I had a virus protection program installed and when run, it said there was mutliple viruses on the computer. At first it took several attempts to start the computer, but it would start properly, eventually. A couple weeks later, the computer refused to start up. All of the lights turn on and the fan starts as if the computer is going to boot up, but the screen remains blank. The dvd drive works and the AC adapter has been replaced. I have even tried to reset the memory. Still nothing. Could the problem have been caused by a virus?
Any help is much appreciated! Thank you!

I have a HP Pavilion dv5117d. Power comes on fan runs a few seconds and either hangs on the HP screen or if F10 is held sometimes can get to Bios screen. However at Bios screen nothing can be changed, no response to keyboard. I have pulled the memory and tried to boot with no memory and inserting 1 stick at a time. All with the same problem. Have removed harddrive-no change. Removed CMOS battery-no change. Have tried to start with and w/o battery using ac power, as well as start with ac only.
    Thanks

the power led is on after i press the power button, but the lcd remain blank (i check with flashlight but there is nothing at all). then the fan is spinning and the ‘busy” led flashing 1-2 second to check dvdrom (lcd still blank)…and nothing happends,,, no toshiba logo, no Post, not even a bios screen by pressing F2

at first i thought it was the lcd.. but i realize that the busy led didnt flashing like usual (except for checking dvd) and i didnt hear windows login sound if i wait a couple min..i think the Data in HDD is safe,, but i really need to use my laptop… >.< i really2 appreciate every suggestions i can get

what i’ve tried so far :

    1. Remove RAM, Replace it with my old RAM (dunno if its still work), one slot at a time, one RAM at a time, no RAM at all, etc…

    2. Remove 1st HDD, Remove 2nd HDD, Remove both…

    3. using battery only, AC only, completly plug out (AC / Battery) for 1-2 hour then try again,

    4. Using Ext. Monitor

    5. Rapidly press F1-F12

    6. Heating it first with hairdryer 1-2 min before pressing the power (from HP forum,, many said it was working)

    7. Pray to God….and Pray Harder….

    The Result is : Nothing…nothing changed…..

if its the Motherboard then the power led, fan n dvd wont start, right? i’m thinking to buy a new RAM but first i wanna make sure, coz the price is pretty expensive in my country…

    Hi…
    @Everybody
A friend of mine had Dell and the problem was that after switching ON nothing was displayed. Only the beep came and then no display but the processor was running and the laptop was ON. we took it to the service center and they told us after repairing that they had to replace the Hard Disk… Replace your HD, you will get the answer…

Sometimes you will see a blue screen while surfing and then power off… Here try to use minimal programs as every laptop has a limited graphics memory or change your graphics card

    LAPTOP GATEWAY MX6900 SERIES.
Continuing with this issue, I did almost all I read on the internet suggests; removed/changed perifericals (HD, video card, memories, dvd drive, etc). Now I recovered the bios display and it can show me the HD and DVD. Now the big issue is no boot from CDrom, I changed the HD with OS and nothing happen…next step is connect a USB boot system or a USB HD with OS.
Do you have other idea? Thanks for your response.
