Laptop went into hibernation and now it will not power up

While showing a presentation a few days ago my laptop went into hibernating and shut down. AC plugged in. When attempted to power back on nothing happened. LED lights on front panel blink but power LED does not. My laptop is HP Pavillion dv5000.

Probably the power (AC) adapter is dead. I think your power adapter died while the laptop was showing a presentation. Without AC power the laptop was working until the battery charge went down to zero and then it hibernated. Now, the front LED flashes but the laptop will not start because the battery is discharged. The power LED will not light up because the power adapter is dead. That’s my guess.

Before you purchase a new power adapter, I would suggest testing the old one with a voltmeter. If the old adapter is OK you may have a problem with the motherboard.

    Steve,
The DC jack doesn’t fail like that. I think it’s either bad power or bad motherboard. Check the power supply with a voltmeter.

If you find the culprit, please let me know. I posted your question here.

i have a 5 yo sony vaio PCG-7A2L. worked fine last night, and i shut it down (vs. hibernating) when i was done. today, it will not power up at all – no response when i hit the power button, no lights when connected to power. i’ve tried pressing power button for extended time, remove/reinsert battery, switching batteries, switching power cords – no result.

suspect problem w/the motherboard, or with the connection between the dc jack and the motherboard. any advice on diagnostic &/or repair would be appreciated.

I have a Toshiba A135 Laptop Computer. I was used it this afternoon for 5 hours. It became very hot when I shut it down. I went to use the Laptop again 4 hours later and it is completely dead. I tried pushing the on/off button several times and nothing happens. The only light that is on is the power cord light. Has this happened to anyone? Does anyone have an idea of what the problem may be that is causing this?

Thank you in advance for any help!

and now the laptop will not turn on unless it is plugged in. When I depress the battery meter it shows that the battery is fully charged. The power meter also shows the battery as charging. The battery is rather new (two months)

I have the same issue except I didnt install a new Hard Drive as Duane did. After standyby and shut down, the laptop will tourn on with only the battery power but restarting after hibernation requires the laptop to be plugged in! Also you seem to have to press the power button 2 or three times in the later scenario only.

I know it must be a software issues as I reinstalled windows recently (clean format install) and after the initial install everything was fine with hibernation but somewhere in the update process for XP and various hardware drivers, it’s gone awry again.

Have you heard of this before Laptop Freak???

    Hey,

I have a Dell XPS M1330, and a few days ago I put it into hibernation, which I do all the time and nothing bad had never come of it. The next day, I try to turn it back on, but nothing appears on both my external monitors. I unplug them, and I try to get something on the built-in LCD, but it’s completely black.

I read this and thought it could have been the battery, but after I looked my battery actually comes with a built-on indicator that tells me how charged it is; it’s full. However, when it’s in my laptop and the AC is plugged in, the charge light lights up for about a second and stops.

When I turn it on, there are two ways I could do it; if I just click the power button, the button itself doesn’t light but the usual caps/scroll/num lock lights start blinking, along with the front power light. If I turn it on while holding down FN (apparently it loads it up in diagnostic mode), I hear a beep then the power button lights, but still nothing on the screen.

    Thanks for any help.

I have a HP NC6120 Business laptop. When plugged in the Power light lights up for about 6 seconds. After 3 of those seconds the charge light blinks yellow 6 time, green one time then yellow one time. Then the process starts over.I got a new Main battery for it and a new CMOS batt for it.Could it be the AC adapter?

I don’t think that your problem is related to the AC adapter. It sounds like you have more serious problem.
    Here’s something you can try.
    1. Try minimizing the laptop. Remove hard drive, DVD drive, battery. Does it still fail when minimized?
    2. Try reconnecting memory modules.

I have a Lenovo SL 300. Last week a classmate knocked it off my desk at school, but continued to work just fine. The next evening, it was accidentally left on (in sleep mode) overnight without being plugged in. The following morning it would not turn on after being plugged in.

When I push the power button, the LED around it lights up, and it acts like it boots up but the screen remains black (no backlight). I recharged the battery but get the same result whether plugged in or not. Reseating the memory did not help either, and there was no result when connected to an external monitor. I’m guessing this is a motherboard problem? Any idea how much it would cost to have the motherboard replaced?

I have a Gateway MX7118 I bought back 2006. I use it for a primary and it stays on pretty much all the time.
Just left the room and went back in and it was off. Attempted to power on and nothing. Checked AC/DC adapter, has 125 for AC and 18.68 for DC. The only light that is on is the plug icon underneath the smart pad. No blue or red LED at all?? Red will flicker if you mess with battery.

Hi, I recently ran into a problem. I have had my Acer Aspire 5720Z (Windows Vista, 200GB HD, 2GB RAM) for a little over a year. I usually have it charging. A day ago, when I got on it wasn’t charging even with the AC adapter plugged in. I messed around with it for a while changing outlets and whatnot and got it to work for a few minutes and then it stopped and did that a second time but can’t seem to do that anymore. The green light is still on the AC adapter, but my computer has no power and will therefore not turn on anymore. I took the battery out and looked at it and couldn’t find a problem at all. What could be wrong?

I already replace new dc jack in it…I see the blue lid is on that is charge the battery…but only problem is it won’t power up

Check the memory module. Make sure it’s properly seated in the socket. Try reconnecting the module and maybe move it into the empty slot (if you have any).

I have a HP ZE5300 Pavilion Laptop. About a year ago, I replaced the AC plug adapter. The old one, I had to move it in just the right position at the input jack for it to show it was charging the laptop battery and run off of the AC plug. I was sitting in the living room about 6 months ago and using it like I always do. I noticed it went to the battery power (battery life was about 15 minutes). I tried to wiggle the back and it didn’t do any good. I also noticed that the light on the front of the computer that shows that it has AC power was off. I shut it down and noticed that the front light came back on. It was charging the battery. I turned it back on and the light went back off and was running on the battery. So, I shut it back down. The light comes back on charging the battery. Once the battery is fully charged, it doesn’t seem to go back to running off of the AC at all. Every once in awhile, it will show that it is running off of the AC then go back to the battery. I just bought a new battery and it did not solve the problem. I tried the old AC charger andit did not solve the problem either. I took the motherboard out and the jack seems to be soldered fine with no broken circuits. Does anyone have a solution?

I have a HP G5000 laptop which keeps switching itself off. It does not shut down totally but looks like it is hibernating but needed switching off and then on again to bring it back to life. Each time it says an error occured but cannot fix this. It does this in safe mode as well and can be after 10 seconds or 10 minutes no matter what programmes are opened or if it is left alone.
This started happening about 2 days after I plugged in my charger which gave a bang, gave me a small shock, tripped the house and now does not work. I put this down to a new house which seems to trip easily. Are the problems with the laptop probably due to this?
    Many thanks, great site!

turned on my laptop and accidentally connected a charger to my laptop that was not its charger. when i connected the charger my laptop turned off. after i realized it was the wrong charger i connected the correct one and it still wouldn’t turn on.

First of all try this. Unplug the AC adapter, remove the battery and wait for a few minutes. Now plug in the AC adapter and try turning it on.

If the problem still persists, apparently you damaged the motherboard (could be blown fuse).

my comp is not boting properly and displays a grey screen with slight coloured streaks. It will not start in safe mode or Bios.
occasionally it changes its mind and boots up fine!

Did you test the laptop with an external monitor? Does the external video work fine?

If this problem appears only on the internal screen and external works fine, it could be:
    1. Loose connection between the cable and LCD screen.
    2. Defective video cable.
    3. Bad LCD screen.

I would try reseating the video cable first. Read more post for troubleshooting LCD screen problems.

This problem occured about 1 month ago and i took it to a repairerer as it was under warranty. It worked for about 3 weeks and now the grey screen syndrome is back.
is it the alledged “appolo and Atlantis” problem?
The laptop had a drop prior to the first repair, but it has not been overclocked or drooped since and was working fine or about 2 weeks after warranty? what should I do?
    Thanks for your help.
