I did this exact thing, ubuntu is a great operating system and can be reinstalled on the old device after files have been recovered. You can atleast use the computer to surf the net still, but I suggest that you go get a new hardrive and that will fix the computer along with Ubuntu. Yay for saving a ton of lost information.

Brilliant! This saved my butt. My laptop hard drive got corrupted and couldn’t boot Windows nor repair itself with the Windows XP Recovery Console. I was delighted to see how easy it was to burn Ubuntu to a CD, boot my laptop with it and mount other volumes.

Hi, i tried to follow the instructions, but my computer doesn’t react to the ubuntu CD, even after i prioritised it and disabled the faulty hard drive. What to do??!

Question: Have the old hard drive from a desktop. Gateway, Windows XP. Would like to transfer photos from the old drive to my new Laptop (HP dv7, Windows7). Is this possible? If so what would be the steps? Do you have to open the computer or can the old drive somehow be connected to a usb or some other port? Any help appreciated…even if it is to suggest a place that would do the recovery to dvd or something at a reasonable price. New York 12533. Thanks. Tim

My Toshiba Laptop SA50-101 Hard Drive shows bad sectors in D-Drive. ALthough amount is still small (about 16KB) but is there any way to remove them. I tried formatting the D Drive from C prompt but they are not going. How to stop it further propagating if can not be removed?

Hey,

As I was installing Ubuntu, 3 messages appeared similar to this: [12.224205] ata1: softreset failed (device not ready).

It was installed but for some reason I cannot mount the hard drive. It doesn’t appear in “places” like step 4 indicates. I was able to mount flash drive but couldn’t mount HDD.

Have any advice? Does this mean it’s physically damaged and i wont be able to retreive any info?

I tried it using ubuntu 7. i got the laptop HD out & connect it to a external convertor (like a portable HD) & connected it to my desktop PC. but i cant mount the laptop HD. It does not connect to the windows environmnt also. Someone pls help me to get my files back.
