How to update RAM on HP Pavilion dv5220 laptop

I have a HP DV5220 , i am planning to upgrade the RAM on it and needed to know if i have to replace the 1 gig on it or add 1 gig to it .. it is only expandable to 2 gigs and i don’t know if there are 2 slots or 1 slot only and hence the dilemma as to ordering 1 gig ram or 2 gig ram.. any help will be greatly appreciated.

the motherboard is HP part no. 417021-001, i don’t know if that helps ,, the ram on it is — 333MHz, 200-pin, PC2700 Small Outline Dual In-Line Memory Module (SODIMM)

According to the official PC user guide for HP Pavilion dv5220US, this laptop has two RAM slots and both slots can be accessed from the bottom of the laptop.

Here’s a quoted from the user guide:

The computer has one memory module compartment, which is located on the bottom of the
computer. The memory capacity of the computer can be upgraded by adding a memory module to
the vacant expansion memory module slot or by upgrading the existing memory module in the
primary memory module slot.

You’ll have to remove the RAM cover and take a look inside the memory module compartment.
If you have two 512MB modules installed, you’ll have to remove them and replace with two 1GB modules.
If you have only one 1GB module installed and the second slot is empty, you can add one more 1GB module.

Thanks a lot for your reply, I think it said that it was 1 Dimm so that means it only has 1 gig mem card right instead of 2 512mb’s .

    sanu,
I would take a look inside the memory compartment just in case. It’s not difficult. Just remove the RAM cover on the bottom.

I am writing in an effort to discuss some major problems that I have had with my laptop. It is an HP Pavilion dv5220us. I have had issues with it since I purchased it from Staples. I have contacted the company several times, but they have refused to offer me any assistance. The last individual that I spoke with advised me that if three people who purchased that same model number call customer service and file a complaint, the laptop will be recalled and we will be given new laptops. The main problem that my laptop has is that it shuts itself down all the time without my advising it to do so. I will be in the middle of a term paper and it will just shut itself off. If you have experienced the same problem with your HP Pavilion dv5220us, I urge you to contact HP Customer Service at 1-800-474-6836. Please post here if you decide to call. I would like to keep track of the number of people who call in, so that we can make HP follow through on its word. Only two people need to call with this complaint in order for new laptops to be sent to us. Please call if you have experienced this same problem. It is frustrating and we should not have to deal with it. Thank you for your time!

I called the hp 800 number and they would not even attempt to help me since the warranty is out. I asked them several times if this laptop had any hardware recalls and they said no. I asked them if there was a website that I could link to that would help me identify recalled hardware.
