Seems like everyone here is missing the most important point: This is a MANUFACTURING DEFECT caused by TOSHIBA's fault, guys!!!
The plastic around the left screen hinge and the VGA connector starts cracking during the first year already, with the thin plastic pins over the ventilation unit falling apart one by one.
Since it's the first year, you cannot really figure out the full effect of that defect - so what if a small plastic piece or two falls apart, which does not look more than a small cosmetics? But as the disintegration goes on, after about 2 years most or all these platsic pins across the ventilation unit are gone.
At that point the stress on the remaining plastic cover, fragile as it is because that's a very poorly build plastic anyway, is too large for the plastic to hold together and the area around the VGA connector and the left screen hinge starts to crack. Next the 2 tiny screws keeping the lower plastic cover bound to the laptop pop up due to the growing stress on them and the whole structure gives way and completely disintegrates, the soft metal of the screen hinges also snapping in two around the screw hole.
We users should hold Toshiba responsible for that defect and demand that they repair any such laptop case and broken screen hinges - they cannot hide behind the one-year covergae as this problem is actually the result of a problem that starts during the first year!!!

Dan,

my toshiba satellie A40-151 laptop hinges have snapped completely the laptop still works but i have to rest it on the wall it is that bad, you can actually lift the computers screen up and inch or to, you can see the thick black lead that goes back into the laptop, but im sure teh hinges have snapped completely just behind the speaker grill any ideas?

Sounds like both hinges are broken and have to be replaced. Follow this procedure:

I took apart a Toshiba Tecra M1 to repair the hinges. Not sure what type of problems othjer models present but this one had the hinge "separated" not really broken. There was a rivet that became loose. I basically drilled a hole through it with a very small drill bit and used a screw and nut to reassemble them. Worked like a charm since the rivet is a soft metal. Another option is to use a plastic weld product (epoxy product to assemble the hinge even if it might be broken.
This does require an almost complete disassembly of the laptop but if you are very careful and can make notes on where stuff came from then you might be ok to try it.
Took almost 4 hours for the job though.

I recently restored and updated a Toshiba Satellite P85 for my daughter. All went well software wise but the hinge on the display is very loose. Nothing appears to be broken but the display will only stay in two positions. Is there anyway of tightening up the hinges short of replacing them? Thank you for your review and response.
