After changing hard drive in my laptop it says Operating system not found

After changing the hard drive in my laptop, I am getting the following error message:

PXE-E61
PXE-M0F
Operating system not found

You can get this message if the hard dive is bad OR there is no operating system installed.
Didn’t you forget to reimage the hard drive using the recovery disc which usually comes with a laptop? This process will reinstall the operating system and software back to factory defaults.

A new hard drive is blank, it has on OS installed. It’s not enough just install it into the laptop. You’ll have to install the operating system.

So I am working on a Toshiba M45-s331 for a client. He left it on his bed overnight running. The problem I have now is the media error, pxe-061 error that everyone is talking about. First thing that I tried is to change the hd. Bought a brand new 160gb ide drive. Still get the error. I have heard “change the cmos battery(which I guess is soldered to the motherboard). But what does that have to do with the hard drive.
My guess is that something overheated, but I’m not sure what.

Whoever gave you the CMOS battery suggestion is probably someone I wouldn’t ask for advice again, unless you’re looking for bad advice. There is not great evidence to suggest that a CMOS battery is bad. To check it out, boot into BIOS and make sure the time is correct. Shut down, give it 5 minutes and bot into BIOS again. If your system clock has lost time then your CMOS battery has to be bad.

As far as your PXE error, have you changed the boot priority in BIOS to indicate booting from LAN/Network as last on the list? The error you’re getting could very well be that there is no default driver installed for the NIC – this would make perfect sense since you just switched the hard drive out. Can you boot from the optical drive? If so, manually select to boot from CD and try to install an OS. If you can’t, then there is likely a problem with the Motherboard. Power supply is likely fine, as you are able to turn the machine on and I’m assuming that it winds up the hard drive.
